We must all WORK together to make OLD DOMINION Moose Legion successful this coming year. To all Committee MLC Chairman, please get your Assistant Secretary names and numbers to Jimmy ASAP. Remember, if you have an alternate on file with Jimmy, either one of the two will count for your Lodge MLC being present. According to Marriam- Webster Dictionary the definition for RETENTION is the act of retaining, keeping. The next word is RETENTIVE having the power of retaining. The next word is RETICENT uncommunicative, inclined to be silent or secretive. We have heard or read in the past the word activities, give Thanks in advance for getting those names in. I hope to see everyone in Tappahannock, July 15-17, 2011 for the Summer Celebration. The fun and our brothers a reason to stay and they will. Remember doing something is much better than doing nothing at all. Let s not become reticent, and keep in mind the promise we made to aid and protect Mooseheart and Moosehaven to the full extent of our ability and the Moose Legion Mission, to have fun while fellowship will be great and the GOLF also! Get your teams together. See you there! Jimmy and I should have news from the 2011 Moose International Convention in Anaheim, California during our July 11th meeting in Tappahannock. Fraternally, Sam Barnhill, President Jr. Past President providing greater service to the Moose Fraternity by working retentively we will be successful with retention. Fraternally, Jack Beck

V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 1 We are off to a new Moose Legion Year. Several accomplishments were made from our endeavors last year. All Directors made the Key Club, we made our Membership Quota, and I believe there was a little more fun had at the cost of our Jr. Past President, Jack Beck. (a short opening statement). Desk of the Secretary P A G E 2 successful for both the Lodge MLC and the ODML. 3. I highly suggest you considering naming an alternate Assistant Secretary to represent your MLC when the Asst. Secretary listed cannot attend. Meeting dates are published for the entire year. These names must be reported to me for inclusion in the roll call. There are several items I need to address: 1. The Moose Legion Committee is a standing committee of the Lodge. It is up to the Governor to insure the MLC is up and working. Attendance is now reported to the Regional Manager and Area Manger. If the Assistant Secretary misses more than three meetings, your committee will be reported as being not in good standing with this Moose Legion. 2. Participation in Moose Legion functions will be the primary basis in which we decide who gets the larger hospitality rooms. Participation has dropped off and support of our Fraternal and Financial fundraisers has been poor. We will be trying more of the type fundraisers such as the Wearing of the Green held in conjunction with the Manchester MLC, which has been Important Notice There has also been a change in venue for the Winter Celebration. Please read the enclosed article listing the new hotels. The main hotel just recently renovated had a 5 million dollar overall. I believe you find the new accommodations will meet or exceed your expectations. Although a non-smoking property, there are easily assessable smoking areas abundantly located immediately outside the exit doors. Please give your support to this new Board of Directors. Along with your support and encouragement this Board will be successful in our mission this year. My sincere thanks to last year s Board, Committee Chairpersons, and Asst. Secretaries that worked so hard and attended the meetings to accomplish what we were able to do. Fraternally, Jim Cridlin The Winter Celebration will no longer be held at the Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel (formerly Holiday Inn) beginning in February 2012. We have contracted with two new properties to host us for the next five years. The main hotel which has 173 guest rooms (Crowne Plaza) will be on a first come basis. The over-flow hotel (Springhill Suites Marriott) will be assigned as soon as the main hotel is filled. The main hotel will only accept a minimum of two night stays. Shuttle service will be provided between hotels from 4:00 PM to 12 Midnight. A parking deck is located adjacent to the main hotel with 300 parking spaces. We have included room reservation forms early this year based on the early interest we have received. Credit cards will be charged for one night s stay. Payment in full along with the $10 per person reservation fee must be included or the reservation form will be returned to you. Note: These are non-smoking hotels as required by law. V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 1 Fellow Moose Legionnaires Fraternal Director Let me first start by saying that I am honored to serve as the Fraternal Director for the New Year. Last year the support for the Ritual team fundraisers was not very good. It is my job to try to increase the support for these fund raisers. The Board of Director s are fully aware of the tough times we are living in right now, and understand that everyone can not contribute to these fund raisers. That being said all I can say is that it does not hurt to ask a brother or sister if they would like to purchase a raffle ticket. The worst thing they can say is no, and that s okay. You can feel good about yourself because at least you tried. Brothers this is all it takes to make these fundraisers successful. The first Ritual team fundraiser will be ready before the first ODML#148 meeting on May 19th at King William Lodge. Please make sure your Asst. 148 Secretary is there so he can receive tickets and bring some back to your Moose Legion Committee s. Also the attendance drawing will continue this year, so please try to make the meetings. SICKNESS AND DISTRESS Fraternally, Ryan Spain P A G E 3 Our Defending Circle has once again been broken. Dwayne Sydnor of Callao #917 recently suffered a fatal heart attack. Dwayne was the younger brother of District 3 President, Glenn Sydnor and was to be installed as Jr. Governor at Callao. George-Ann Bardon, wife of Past President Dave Bardon, is currently going through rehab for a broken foot and ankle. Danny Belvin of Sandston is recovering from shoulder surgery. Let us keep these members and their families in our prayers as they go through the process of putting their lives back in order. EVENTS May 30th, Richmond-Lakeside #1714 is hosting their Annual Memorial Day Picnic and Duck Race. The picnic is Everything is a Dollar and starts at Noon. Race Ducks may be adopted for $5 each with 1st place $300, 2nd place $200 and 3rd place $100. COMMUNICATION Chaplain / Publicity I am proud to have been given an opportunity to serve you as Chaplain for a second term. My pledge to you is to do my very best to serve our members. Much of the work of the Chaplain depends on communication. I rely on you to provide information about sickness as well as any Moose Legion events you have scheduled. If I don t hear from you, I have very little to report. I beg you to make me work harder by sending me information. Send the information to stevedelta@hotmail.com. You may also call me at 804-832-3861. Financial Director Happy New Year! Moose Legion New Year that is. As we start a new year, Old Dominion #148 needs your help financially this year. Please help and support ODML#148 and your Moose Legion Committee fundraisers and other functions. We are the Fun Degree so let s have fun this year and raise some funds along the way. Our first fundraiser will be a $500 (50/50) cash giveaway. Only 200 tickets will be sold at $5.00 per ticket. The attendance award is up to $135 plus, just sign up your name and last three digits of your Moose ID number. It only costs one dollar to enter and you could win if your number matches the pick 3 lottery number night drawing the day of our business meeting. VICE-PRESIDENT Fraternally, Rick Harshman In honor of our Past President, Jack Beck, I will keep this short. Please keep up on your list to sign new Moose Legionnaires. Show them we have fun at most anything we do. The Summer Celebration at Tappahannock is coming up July 15-17, 2011. Let us have a large number seated for the Conferral. The $10 application fee that was waived, has expired as of the 1st of May. Call me if I can help in any way (804) 357-7135. Fraternally, Doug Daniel Fraternally, Steve Williams
