2 Bible Road Trip ~ covers Genesis Chapters 37-50; the life of Joseph. This week, we continue our study of Genesis, the first book of the Pentateuch. We re still reading in the genre of historical narrative. That means we re reading real history, told in the form of a story. The story this week we ll read the story of Joseph, the oldest son of Jacob and Rachel. The reading for the Preschool/Kindergarten and Lower Grammar levels is a little long again this week. Feel free to spend two weeks on this week s study if you d like. Joseph was an interesting young man who loved God, and was devoted to Him. In this way, Joseph was different from the other patriarchs we studied last week. Though Abraham, Isaac and Jacob obeyed God, their devotion sometimes wavered, and their actions occasionally betrayed wandering hearts. In contrast, Joseph was committed to following the Lord, and to giving Him all glory. Though Joseph suffered much during his life, he did not turn from the Lord. God ultimately blessed Joseph, and those Joseph loved. Also interesting, Joseph was not in the line of the Abrahamic covenant. His descendants did not lead to the line of Christ (tribe of Judah), nor did they lead to the priestly line (tribe of Levi). Instead, Joseph was a nominal, side-line Biblical character. God often loves and uses people we don t expect, just as He loved and used Joseph to His own glory. The family of Jacob entered the region of Goshen in Egypt with 65 offspring (not including the wives). (Genesis 46:26) 430 years later, Jacob s family had become a mighty nation with an estimated 2 million people. Though they were enslaved in Egypt, the Israelites were also protected from their warring neighbors and from famine by the prosperous nation of Egypt. Our prayer focus this week is the religion of Islam and the nation of Saudi Arabia for the Grammar stages, and Egypt, Oman and the United Arab Emirates for the Dialectic and Rhetoric stages. As we move into Egypt for the next few weeks, you may want to introduce your children to what the ancient Egyptians believed. It s easier to understand the interactions between Moses and the reigning Pharaoh once you understand the Pharaoh s religious beliefs. Your public library should have a number of basic picture books regarding the Egyptians. Some excellent books include: Eyewitness Books: Ancient Egypt, George Hart, Eyewitness Books: Mummy or Eyewitness Books: Pyramid, James Putnam, Pyramid, David Macaulay, or Penguin Historical Atlas of Ancient Egypt, Bill Manley.

Crafting Through the Word Paint a picture of one of the dreams described in chapters of Genesis. Our favorite technique is to outline our picture with pencil on cardstock, and use watercolors to paint. Once the paints are completely dry, we use a thin-line Sharpie to outline the main parts of the picture. It s a neat technique; experiment to see how you like it. Build a pyramid out of LEGOs, blocks, or Styrofoam project bricks (you can find them at your local craft story). Create a work of art for your Bible Verse Catalog, using your verse for this week.

Praying about the Word Operation World, Jason Mandryk o Read: Pages (Egypt), (Oman), (United Arab Emirates) o Pray: Choose one Challenges for Prayer from each country to add to your prayer journal for the week. Don t forget to pray! Learning More about the Word Explore Further Do a mini-research project on the dates the pyramids were constructed in Egypt. Scholars aren t certain when Joseph moved Jacob to Egypt, but think it may have been sometime between 1876 BC and 1706 BC. What pyramids and structures were already built when Jacob s family moved to Egypt? A fun site to visit is Scroll to Egypt and check out some of the pictures! At the bottom of each page, there are links to more sites with more pictures. Write about what you find. Crafting Through the Word We re still guessing when it comes to the dates for the patriarchs. Scholars have narrowed the dates down to a range of a few hundred years (that s pretty good, when we talk about things that happened 4,000 years ago!). Ask your parents how they d like you to handle these dates. You may choose to put them on your timeline, knowing they are educated guesses, or you might choose to leave them off. Alternately, you could write them in a different color ink, so you ll know these aren t biblically-confirmed dates. o 1914 BC or 1700 BC? ~ Joseph is born (Lived 110 years Gen. 50:22) o 1876 BC or 1706 BC? ~ Jacob and Family move to Goshen in Egypt
