1 Bible Road Trip ~ covers chapters 17-22; Ahab and Elijah. This week, we are studying 1 Kings, the sixth historical book. 1 Kings and 2 Kings were once a single book, just like 1 and 2 Samuel. 1 Kings is primarily a historical narrative. It tells the story of the history of Israel s kings, from the death of David until Ahab. 2 Kings follows this narrative with biographies of nearly 30 kings. The narrative of these books ends in the exile of the nations of Israel and Judah, which divide in our readings this week. 1 and 2 Kings were most likely written during the exile, though they could have been written just afterward. The author is explaining the cause of the exile to the remnant of God s people. As such, he is far more concerned with how faithful each king is to the Lord than he is with any political or historical issues. This week, we will read about the reign of the notoriously wicked Ahab (married to the evil Queen Jezebel). There are consequences to Ahab s evil behavior, but we see that God is willing to give Ahab victory over Ben-hadad of Syria when it fits His plan, and it glorifies Him. God communicates frequently with Ahab through his prophets, and yet, we don t see any sort of sorrow or repentance from Ahab for his actions. In this section of 1 Kings, we also read about the life of Elijah. We see his discouragement and his declaration that he is the only one still following God. God declares that this is not true, and the chapters following show other prophets of God prophets Elijah was not willing to acknowledge in his despair. We also meet Elisha as he is commissioned to take Elijah s place. 1 Kings is really the basis for the theology of retribution based on the Sinai Covenant in Deuteronomy - the idea that obedience to God is followed by blessing, while disobedience is met with failure. Each king is evaluated on that basis. In the Grammar stages, our prayer focus this week is the Sudanese, and for the Dialectic and Rhetoric stages we ll study Fiji, New Caldonia, and Vanuata.
