1 Bible Road Trip ~ covers all of 1 Chronicles, chapters This week, we are studying 1 Chronicles, the eighth historical book. 1 Chronicles and 2 Chronicles were once a single book, just like 1 and 2 Samuel, and 1 and 2 Kings. The book was divided into two parts when it was translated from Hebrew to Greek, probably as a way to fit the larger manuscript onto two scrolls. 1 Chronicles is a court history featuring David as a heroic figure. There are also aspects of other literary genres such as different types of documentary writing. 1 Chronicles is not just a recap of the books of 1 and 2 Samuel and 1 and 2 Kings. Modern scholars estimate that it was written sometime between 450 to 400 BC for the Jewish people following the exile, and that it is likely the first commentary on Scripture. It is a message of hope and redemption, highlighting God s promise to David which points to a coming Messiah. In addition to highlighting the Davidic covenant and the promise of an imminent king, the book of 1 Chronicles also emphasizes the correct way to worship God, focusing on the Temple. You will notice that the book skips many portions of the stories of David and Saul. Rather, the author chooses to highlight the good things about the reign of David and his position as God s chosen king, and the patriarch of God s chosen line of rulers. The author of 1 Chronicles uses the books of 1 and 2 Samuel and 1 and 2 Kings as resources for his commentary on Scripture. He likely also uses other written documentation that we no longer have access to. Rhetoric students may find they have an uncomfortable amount of reading to do this week. You can always divide this unit into two weeks. The good news, however, is that the chapters are really short. In the Grammar stages, our prayer focus this week is Papua New Guinea, and for the Dialectic and Rhetoric stages we ll study Cook Islands, French Polynesia, and Kiribati.
