I don't know about you, but I cannot wait to go up the mountain for the spiritual retreat at Beersheba September 7-9! Olive Davenport and her team have worked very hard to make this event special and are excited to welcome us. Please note that there are classes for the children and youth when the adults are in session - please encourage moms and grandmothers in your church to come to the retreat and bring their precious children! The deadline for applications being received is August 24. We are so thrilled to announce that Harriet Jane Olson, CEO of United Methodist Women National, will be our guest speaker at our Annual Meeting on October 13! It will be held at Murfreesboro First UMC and they can't wait to host us. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. Extended information about both of these events and registration forms are included in this newsletter. It actually rained in my neck of the woods today (Praise God!) and it became cool enough for me to sit out on the deck. As I looked out over God's creation, I had no doubt that He was with me. His love and faithfulness are everlasting. There is no better way for us to return this faithfulness to Him than to take care of the least of these. That is what we as United Methodist Women do through our mission giving - we are taking care of women, children and youth. As we enter the last portion of 2018, please prayerfully consider making an extra gift - individually, as units or as a district - to this important and worthwhile cause. Karen Maynard will be more than happy to process these extra checks and send them on! Thanks so much for your hard work and faithfulness to United Methodist Women. I hope to see many of you soon! Blessings, Nita Wright President 1 August, 2018

MARY T NEWMAN is a first term nominee for MISSION COORDINATOR FOR SOCIAL ACTION and would be a part of the class of As a mother of 5 grown children and 3 grandchildren - with one on the way and a great grandchild, I have been multi-tasking a lot of years! Raising our children to be able to 'take care of themselves' has been a goal that I think we accomplished. Sustenance living is hard but rewarding. I was employed 13 years with the Office of Connectional Ministries. Prior to that employment, I began work on the district levels with Native American Ministries. I still continue on the conference level with the committee as coordinator. With that focus, I also serve on Native American Comprehensive Plan-the national plan. This led me to meet people for different tribal and geographic areas. I represent the Southeast Jurisdiction with General Board of Global Ministries which led me to serve on PAG. I really enjoy that connection. Serving on the board of SEJANAM, the Southeast Jurisdiction Association of Native American Ministries led me to serve as chair of the Southeast Native American Caucus--which led me to serve on NAIC, the Native American International Caucusthe advocacy arm of the church. All said, my sanity is clay. It 'grounds me', no pun intended! Making pottery in the old ways of the southeastern Native Americans and firing on the ground with wood is fulfilling to know that that way is not lost. Teaching those ways is a great way to let people know that way of working with clay is not lost. AQUILLA LILLARD Is a first term nominee for MISSION COORDINATOR FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH and would be with the class of Aquilla has been a member of the UMW since 1990 and was the President of Wesley Chapel UMC unit until the unit became inactive, She is now a member of the Nell Medford unit of Bethesda UMC. She was a member of the Committee on Nominations for 4 years, 2 of those years as chairman. Aquilla currently is the TN Conference 150 th Legacy Fund Liaison, working to provide a legacy for the United Methodist Women to COME during the next 150 years. She loves the women of the United Methodist Women! Aquilla is the mother of 2, grandmother of 5, a member of Wesley Chapel UMC, College Grove, the Annual Conference delegate and is a Certified Lay Servant. Reading and pulling weeds are her hobbies. KATHY BOOKER is a first term nominee for CHAIRPERSON COMMITTEE ON NOMINATIONS and would be part of the class of She was born in Bristol, Tennessee and attended John Wesley United Methodist Church. She further pursued her education by attending Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee and received a B.S degree in Bio- Chemistry and a minor in Sociology. She is currently a member of Gordon Memorial United Methodist Church and within her local church she is treasurer for the Greeters Ministry and Finance Committee Chair. She has been active in United Methodist Women for many years and has held offices on the local, district and conference levels. She is past president of the Southeastern Jurisdiction Leadership Training Team and past Women s Division Director. She is currently a member on the conference Nominating Committee. Within the United Methodist Church she is former treasurer for TN BMCR and former lay member of Congregational Development. At present she is on the Board of Ordained Ministries. Kathy is employed at the Tennessee Department of Agriculture and currently holds the position of Pesticide Administrator. She has the responsibility of overseeing the use, mis-use, sale and distribution of pesticides across the state. She has been the past president of the Association of Southern Feed, Fertilizer and Pest Control Officials (ASFFPCO), Tennessee Vegetation Management Association (TVMA) and EPA Region IV Pre- SFIREG Chair (State FIFRA Issues Research and Evaluation Group). Above all else she is a child of God and cannot do anything without him. One of her favorite verses is Philippian s 4:13 I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me. 8 SOCIAL ACTION LEGACY FUND My June 15, 2018 Interview with Mrs. LaVergne Parr, Active Member of the UMW for Over 25 Years. So tell me your first memories of your experience with UMW when you joined in Birmingham, AL. LaVergne: I started around The UMW at Lake Highlands Methodist was actually a night time Circle Guild. I was not very active because I had one baby, and another on the way. There were probably about 12 members. I started working in 1955 or 1956, so I wasn t active in the UMW then until I retired in Then I became very active. I went to Camp Sumatanga to take the course in Missions every year, so I could teach it to the group as a whole, over several sessions. We had five active Circles at Lake Highlands. The meetings were either at the church or at one of the member s homes. We always had a lunch together at the weekly meetings. Once a month we d meet all together, the whole UMW, with a potluck. We also had a program each time; I gave it sometimes. We had outside speakers come in also. We were a very active group probably about 30 women every month. It was held at the church. We held annual bazaars for several years to raise money for missions, also rummage sales. Everybody brought their old goods they didn t need so that we could sell them, and at the same time the kitchen crew would make hotdogs to sell. People from the neighborhood came in. We made a lot of money at those. How did you advertise? "Big sign on the lawn, and at various points on nearby streets. I was reading books for the reading program of UMW too. I always read 20 books a year, in the various categories that were required. I did this for 15 years. What were the categories? I can t remember; probably the same as today, but I don t know what they are today. What category did you like? Can you remember? No, can t remember. All the records from those Circle days were in one of the cabinets in the kitchen at our home in Birmingham, and they were left there! I was the president for 2 or 3 years. I was also the delegate to the annual conference of North Alabama for 2 years I think. I was also a member of the choir at church for quite a few years. So the Circle, the UMW, was your main involvement at church? Yes, but I also taught SS once a month. Probably the last ten years that we were at Lake Highlands. I taught the men s class and also the Wesley Fellowship Class. So, this pin you re wearing has, besides the gold cross pin of the UMW, fifteen gold butterflies signifying each of the 15 years you completed the 20 books on the reading program, right? That s right. You re still a very avid reader. How many books do you think you ve read this year? I have it right here. (Mrs. Parr pulls out a list from a stack of papers on the table beside her reading chair). Thirty-eight. That s how many I ve read this year so far. I also just received a certificate at the FCE club (Family and Community Education) for literacy. Concluding Ms Parr's article I would like to say: To United Methodist Women of the Tennessee Conference, Ms. Laverne's legacy story is a call to you to share your story of being a member of this women's organization. Please consider sharing your story with us during the special time in the life of the United Methodist Women! 8 August, 2018

9 TENNESSEE CONFERENCE UMW READING PROGRAM Hope all have had a great year so far. We have two more events for books to be offered and they are the Beersheba Spiritual Life Retreat and the Tennessee Conference United Methodist Women Annual Meeting books and the Plan Book for 2019 should be available at those events. One last reminder to all units, please turn in the form for the reading program to your District Reading Program Coordinator by August 15. The form can be found at under forms. Certificates will be issued at the District Annual Meetings. Mission u books count in the reading program: Missionary Conferences of the United Methodist Church in the United States, by J. Ann Craig, Education for Mission Embracing Wholeness, by Jessica Stonecypher, Spiritual Growth Living As a Covenant Community, by Evy McDonald Spiritual Growth What About Our Money?, by Susan K. Taylor Nurturing for Community Feel free to count these books in your book list if you have actually read the books. Just going to mission studies does not count. Our reports cover the time period from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018, therefore from August 15 to December 31 you still have time to finish your reading for C S Blessings, Nancy Beyer Vice President Tennessee Conference United Methodist Women tonybeyer@yahoo.com RISE AGAINST HUNGER JUNE 1, 2019 We will again support this as our hands-on mission project for It will again be at Smyrna First UMC registration will begin at 9:00 am and we will begin promptly at 9:30 am. It takes approximately $3, to fund this project and we are hoping that individuals, units and districts will contribute to this. Providing a meal for one person costs $.35. How many meals are you willing to provide? You can go ahead and send checks beginning now to your District Treasurer or directly to Karen Maynard, Conference Treasurer. GET REAL! GET LIVE! Go green this year with a real Christmas tree. Although it may seem harmful to cut down a tree, purchasing a real Christmas tree versus an artificial one is actually more environmentally friendly. Here are three reasons to go real: 1. Buying real trees helps support Christmas tree farms, which stabilize soil, protect water supplies and provide refuge for wildlife. 2. Real Christmas trees can be recycled. They're often disposed of in lakes or ponds, where they provide habitats for fish. 3. Real Christmas trees absorb carbon dioxide and other gases, emitting fresh oxygen. In fact, 1 acre of Christmas trees produces daily oxygen for 18 people. To learn more about real trees and find a farm near you, visit tennesseechristmastrees.org. Taken from Farm and House, 9 August, 2018

10 NEWS FROM HARPETH RIVER DISTRICT Greetings UMW Sisters! 2018 has been an eventful year for the Harpeth River District. The district has grown to 31 active units! This change brought forth the need for a new name for the newsletter: The Voice of the Harpeth River District UMW. We invite you to take a look at the district s website, hrumw.weebly.com. After we had the opportunity to meet sisters from other districts at the Conference Training for the District Officers in January, we scheduled an additional Training for Local Officers in February. Following the training session, Rev. Allen Black presented a motivational message at the Faith Lift. In April, Patsy Elliott, our District E & I Coordinator, organized Partners in Mission Dinner and Program; an event the district has every other year. This event is designed to emphasize the partnership with the pastors, our churches and UMW in Mission works. Our highlighted Mission for the year is Miriam s Promise. Debbie Robinson gave a very informative presentation. We were able to raise over $800 that night. Centerville UMC was the host for the Local Presidents Round Table in June. Presidents and members from all of the units in the district were invited to attend. The purpose of this meeting was to bring all of the units together to share what their unit was doing for Missions. A potluck lunch followed the meeting. What a delicious way to end a meeting! An item addressed this year with the change of districts has been revision of the Accepted Policies for the Harpeth River District. We are very grateful to Lois Azar for all of her diligent work. The proposed policies will be voted on at the District Annual Meeting, which will be September 22 at the Lawrenceburg First UMC beginning at 9:00 a.m. On August 25,we will have the District Mission Study. Hohenwald First UMC for hosting this event. Joyce Clark will be the guest speaker and will lead the study entitled: Missionary Conferences of the United Methodist Church in the United States. She will talk about the Alaska Conference, the Red Bird Missionary Conference and the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference. With blessings, Janet Pierce 10 August, 2018
