3 Greetings Brothers, Welcome to another great year of service in Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. Having just wrapped up our 7th District Council meeting, we have completed crucial plans and items on the agenda for the 76th District meeting which will be held April at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Tampa, Florida. Your district council is working tirelessly to ensure that not only is the meeting informative, but one that promises to be an opportunity for brothers to reconnect and strengthen fraternal bonds. The Brothers of Pi Iota Chapter along with the District Marshal have gone to great lengths to ensure that this meeting is filled with activities for the brethren and their families. Events will include the Black Tie Reception, Founder s Banquet, Deep Sea Fishing, Jazz Sets, Linen Party, Golf Tournament, and host of other activities. The City of Tampa also features many family friendly locations such as Busch Gardens, Florida Aquarium, Adventure Island, Lowry Park Zoo, Tampa Museum of Art, Dinosaur World and Harbor Island. As we move forward in this coming year, our main focus should be to continue the grand work of Omega and to reclaim and retain our Brothers. I look forward to seeing you again as we meet and rededicate ourselves to the legacy of the Mighty 7th District. David Marion, Ph.D. Seventh District Representative Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. 3

4 In Remembrance of Brother Andrew Ducksworth The brotherhood of Omega is saddened at the loss of Brother Andrew Ducksworth, Seventh District Keeper of the Records and Seal. Brother Andrew Ducksworth was initiated into Alpha Lambda Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated at Southern University at New Orleans on April 22,1992. He became the Keeper of Records and Seal (KRS) from He moved to Georgia and became the initial Webmaster for Beta Lambda Lambda Chapter from In 2002, he was served as the chapter KRS and chapter reclamation committee chair. He was chosen as the Beta Lambda Lamba Chapter Omega Man of the Year in 2004 and He continued his service to the fraternity as the Seventh District MSP Committee Chair and the Seventh District Keeper of Records & Seal from 2008 until his death. His most notable achievements include developing interactive training for the Brothers of the Seventh District, providing electronic versions of all forms related to MSP, and creating a self-filling version of form 9A adopted by IHQ. As a seasoned IT Professional, Brother Ducksworth was a core member of the International MSP Committee, Vice Chair of the International Technology Committee, served on the International Web Development Team, and provided IT consultation to IHQ and the Supreme Council for the brotherhood. He was determined to help make the brotherhood operate more efficiently and effectively. He focused his efforts on providing free IT consultation at the request of the Grand Basileus, developed outside of the box data processing solutions, produced comprehensive technical evaluations of HQ infrastructure and streamlined the operations of the office of the Keeper of Records and Seal. In addition to his many skills and talents in technology, Brother Ducksworth had a broad sense of humor and maintained his professionalism. He was a husband, father, educator, mentor, and visionary leader. Simply put, he was a man whose love for the fraternity showed through his service. Our heartfelt prayers are with his family. Ducksworth will be deeply missed and always remembered by the Mighty Seventh District and the brotherhood of Omega Psi Phi, Fraternity Incorporated. *Below is the Resolution submitted by the Grand Basileus of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. 4

10 Members of the 7th District participated in a Summer Reading program event at Johnson Elementary School in Jackson, Mississippi. Students were given donated books to help kick off their Summer Reading Program. Johnson Elementary School gave the students the task of reading the required book that was purchased by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. They were also asked to read additional books for additional incentives. We are encouraging students to read at least 15 books before they leave on the 25th of May, says Principal Faith Strong. Our students wouldn t have the opportunity to have a head start without the help of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. Submitted By Don Spann 10

11 Brothers from Omega Beta Beta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated sponsored its 3rd annual SWIM FOR SUCCESS EVENT and provided school supplies, backpacks, prizes, haircuts, and also fed 275 elementary and middle school students in historical Eatonville, Florida, the oldest (1887) African American Township in America. 12 Scholarship Attainment for Everyone In an attempt to reach and touch those who are often forgotten or least thought of in the education process, the Brothers of the Psi Kappa Kappa Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Madison, Alabama adopted the 6 th - 8 th grade special needs middle school class of the Academy of Academics and Arts, located in Huntsville, Alabama. During the school year, members of the Chapter provided much needed cash donations, school supplies and training aids such as puzzles, flash cards, and games that develop memory and computer programs. The staff and students benefited tremendously from these contributions and as a result the students were able to do things they would not have had an opportunity to do otherwise. As an added bonus, the Chapter held an end of the year celebration which allowed parents, staff and students to come together and celebrate the success of the school year. 13 The 78th Grand Conclave of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated was held in Minneapolis, Minnesota on July 5th - 12th, This conclave proved to be a fruitful and eventful one for all. The Mighty Seventh District had 78 registered chapters out of 142. The plenary sessions began on July 9th and all Grand Officers and District Representatives were present. The reading of the minutes from the 76th Grand Conclave meeting were approved after the official roll call. Minutes from the 77th Grand Conclave were posted online for revision to the fraternal website prior to the 78th Conlave. The Grand Basileus began to give his state of Omega address. During the address, he began to describe how the organization was losing money and what measures were taken to right the ship. Some of these measures were to: * Suspend ATM privileges. Place a limit on fraternal credit cards. Issue cards to grand officers only. Return points accumulated from the use of credit cards to the fraternity. Increase fraternal credit limit from $50,000 to $500,000. Protect the Omega brand by approving and licensing all vendors who wish to sell fraternity para phernalia. Move toward ownership of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated trademark. Some of the reasons for high spending costs were attributed to: Rising costs due to suspensions, expulsions and hazing concerns. Increased expenses for the Grand Counselor in defense of the Fraternity. Lack of payment of insurance premiums by chapters. Loss of revenue on fraternity pins. As a result of these fee increases, the fraternity will be recovering all costs associated with violations of fraternal policies, legal costs and insurance premiums not paid by chapters and Grand Keeper of Records & Seal. Key Points from the Conclave Memorial Service attire is changed to a black suit, white shirt, and dark purple tie. Change the order of the Memorial Service order of the Memorial Service 799 total chapters with 577 in good standing; 20,000 active members; 60,631 reclaimable brothers Honorary Membership criteria was clarified by the Grand Basileus Several recommendations were passed and the changes will be sent to the individual chapters. 16 In the Oracle dated March 1925 Vol. III, No. 1 pages 4 5, Brother Walter H. Mazyck, wrote; If any chapter has reached the maximum numbers for efficient work and brotherly cooperation, let it initiate each year only a number of men equal to those leaving the chapter by way of graduation or otherwise. With the closing of Fort McPhearson and Ft. Gillem, we ve lost a lot of active duty military brothers that made up a big part of the chapter, as such we are following that advice very closely to bring in only qualified men to join our Fraternity, said Brother Phil Thomas, Basileus of the Phi Kappa Kappa Chapter. On July 2, 2012, the brothers of the chapter joined Brothers Rod Dunlap, (Region 1 MSP Representative), and Travis Spurley (Chapter MSP Liasion) to conduct a formal initiation of 18 Candidates that quickly found out the burning sands of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., were hotter than the record breaking heat wave that hit the Atlanta area with temperatures exceeding 105 degrees for two consecutive days prior to this event. A formal initiation lends a measure of importance to an induction ceremony. It reminds candidates of their connection to the national organization of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. It also helps to make the occasion a memorable event of their fraternal lives. Such a ritual should reflect the true meaning of honor bestowed upon the candidates and inspire them to continue to uphold the Cardinal Principles in high esteem. At exactly 9:28pm, Brother Reginald Harris (Seventh District MSP Representative), concluded the initiation ceremony and welcomed the newest brothers into the sacred folds of Omega. Tears of joy could be seen on the faces of the candidates, while tears of pride were seen on the faces of the fathers and blood brothers that escorted their family members on their journey to become Omega. Men! Pictured on the first row from left to right are Brothers: Brian Salters, Jonathan McNeally, Terrial O Neal, Jamel Crawford, Clarence Chambers, Brandon Pollock, Derrick Jackson, and Gerard Reese.
