1 October 2013 Edition MESSAGE FROM THE BASILEUS B rothers of Chi Phi Chapter it has been a pleasure serving in the capacity of Basileus for the past two years. I ve learned a lot and grown as a leader, but more importantly I had the chance to work with some of the best minds in the Fraternity. We have accomplished a lot over the years, but the goal for this administration was to enhance Chi Phi s infrastructure. The Newsletter, website, and social media image of Chi Phi Chapter has been greatly improved. Every chapter meeting was a unique experience because you could feel the passion of the Brotherhood, which at times, would become very intense. Thirty minutes later Brothers would put their petty differences aside and would fellowship in harmony. The memorial services I had to perform reminded me that Omega Men have an unbreakable bond that has kept us in existence for over a century. We have Brothers in our Chapter who have proven that if you are committed to a cause, change could CHI PHI SPEAKS happen. These Brothers understood that leadership is not an entitlement, but rather a combination of sacrifice, passion, and ingenuity. These Brothers also had the ability to articulate their mission, goals and vision. The Founders of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity presented the Brotherhood with a blueprint that had three main goals; To uplift the race, serve the community, and establish a Brotherhood based on Friendship. They didn t have the traditional model for leadership but instead they believed in each other. Chi Phi Chapter is modeled on the same concepts as our Founder s. That is why young men in the chapter s Rites of Passage Program and Scholarship recipients are future leaders that will continue models of success in our community. Serving in the capacity of Basileus also surrounded me with friends that made me a better leader and most of all a better man. Thank You Chi Phi Chapter for allowing me to have served you as your Basileus. O n Saturday, September 28, 2013, the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. held their 4th annual M.O.D.E.L Man (Men of Distinction, Excellence and Leadership) award luncheon at the Hyatt Regency in the Denver Tech Center. The event was extremely well done with great music, comfortable accommodations, a well apportioned lunch and outstanding speakers. Our own Brother Seymour Loftman was set apart and honored as one of twelve Model Men Award recipients. The men who shared the stage as honorees represented every walk of life, various ages and stages in their many respective stations. The common bond they shared was their leadership quality and that they set themselves apart by serving our community in many selfless and tireless ways over many years. They were all distinguished professionals, family men, and men who recognized a need in our community and then stepped into the gap to meet those needs with a servant s heart. Brother Loftman has served Omega, The Kiwanis, His Local HOA, various communities as a Dentist, his family and His God for many many years. This honor was well deserved and a great opportunity for the rest of us to show our gratitude and appreciation for his years of dedicated service to mankind. In this moment in time, we will all lift our voices in one unified voice and say thank you Dear Brother for your friendship, your leadership, and your continued example in being a Model Man and a Stalwart Brother. There are few who know as well as a Brother of this great fraternity, that Friendship is Essential to the Soul. And we all know the value of seeing a sermon sometimes expressed as living your Que. Take note of the lessons shared by this great Bridge Builder. Chi Phi Chapter, the Denver community and this Nation are made better because of his dedication.

TAW R E N C E W H I T E F ive young brothers thoroughly immersed in the true Omega Spirit made her proud at the 9th Annual Step it Up in Mile High City Step Show on September 28th. Sponsored by Denver Alumni chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, this event took place on the campus of the University of Denver. The field house was bursting at the seams as the public filled the venue. The atmosphere was electric. As the brothers took the stage, you could tell the expectations in the room had just skyrocketed. Introducing themselves as the Que-Tations, a play on the legendary R&B group the Temptations, the team set out hop after hop with a slight amount of comedy thrown in. The big moment came when the brothers formed a human stair case which Brother Holloway ran up and jumped off of into a split complete with hooks thrown. By sheer physical prowess the team demonstrated that a great show does not require high production and slick outfits, just skill. There are many ways to shine the Light of Omega. On this evening, the Light shined brightly as The following brothers who comprised Chi Phi s step team, represented the chapter well as they were crowned 1st Place winners: A.J. Moosa, Garrett Simpson, Travis Holloway, Vernon Tabor Jr., and Tawrence White. Congratulations to Chi Phi s Champions! 4 GODLY COUNSEL BY BRO. GANIYU ABDUL Psalm 1:1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful L et me start by sharing with you a story to illustrate the impact and the importance of Godly counsel. It s a story about a couple who had been married thirteen years, in their early thirties with three children. They pastor a church they had founded ten years earlier. The church was growing and God was doing great things in their congregation. A young man began attending the church and serving in the church. The pastor and his wife took to him, loved him and helped him. Over time, his relationship with the pastors wife grew. Their relationship became a three week sexual affair which also led to her becoming pregnant. Upon the Pastor finding out about the affair and the pregnancy, he was distraught, confused and the shock of it left him extremely bitter and betrayed. He did not know where to turn, what to do or how to properly handle the situation. His initial thought was to expose her and shame her by bringing the situation into the open. Not sure if that was the right thing to do and still battling with anger, he went into his office and prayed asking God what to do and how to handle this predicament. God reminded him of a guest they had hosted on their radio program. So he called this man and told him what his wife had done and asked what he should do. This man, a Godly and wise man, reminded the pastor about Christ s relationship with His church (His bride). He reminded him that it was his responsibility as her husband to cover her as Christ covers us when we do wrong and to protect her as Christ protects our shame and guilt from exposure and that he should fight for his bride as Christ fights for his church. The pastor then asked, So what do I do about tonight? Should I leave and stay in a hotel? This Godly man told him to get back in that bed tonight and not separate from his wife. God never leaves us nor forsakes us even in our sin. And what about the pregnancy, the pastor asked? How do I handle that? Once again, the Godly man said to him, There is a baby at your doorstep, will you participate in this fatherless generation. He and his wife reconciled their marriage and stayed together. He even went as far as naming the child his first name so that the child would never question who his father is or whether he is loved. The question is not if, but when you find yourself at a crossroads and don t know which way to turn, do you have a Godly man in your life that you can trust their counsel or do you turn to your worldly friends who will share with you the way of the world? The Psalmist said, Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly. It is a blessing to have Godly men that we respect in our lives to turn to in situations when our world has been rocked and shaken. I have such a man in my life do you?
