1 The Presbyterian Messenger Monthly Newsletter of First Presbyterian Church September 2017 Session Highlights Greetings from the Session, The Session met for its regular monthly meeting on August 9, 2017 at 7:00 P.M. Pastor Josyph opened the meeting with prayer, the lighting of the Christ candle and read from Matt 14: One elder was absent; there was a quorum present. The clerk reported that there are 73 members on the active roll. The death of Phyllis Snyder Hanchett on July 20, 2017 was noted and recorded on the rolls. Phyllis was a long-time member who had moved to Utah to be with family after the death of her husband 8 years ago. The session extends sincere sympathy to the Hanchett family. Josyph reported that his grandsons were healing and dealing with emotional scars while getting ready for school in the fall. We rejoice that the boys are getting better and offer prayers for them, their families and Jean and Josyph. The next Presbytery Meeting will be on September 23 in Pocatello. Anyone interested in attending should contact George McGee our representative. Be ready this fall to sing familiar melodies from our Red Book. Choir Director Paul has promised to mix the old with the new as we worship Sunday mornings. Get ready for Back to Church Sunday on September 17 th. Gather up friends, neighbors, relatives, one and all to join us for worship. Darla Holl is planning a wonderful luncheon afterwards. Bring your garden bounty to share and let s serve the Lord with thanksgiving!! A Big thank you to Bonnie Stanley for her faithful service as nursery attendant. She is here every Sunday to sit with pre-school children during church service. Bring the little ones unto me, said Jesus. The congregation loves to have children in church. They are a joy and treasure! We just need more of them. Regretfully, the Session decided to cancel the First Responder Service due to lack of participation from the communities. They shy away from public thanks; remember to thank them personally when you greet them. 1 Tithes for July were $8554 and expenses were $10,968. We continue to take $2000 a month from our savings account to pay bills and meet payroll. Keeping the church doors open is a priority; Keeping a full-time pastor is a priority; Maintaining our building is a priority. Cost of doing business keeps going up. The session is always looking at ways to save money. If you have ideas and suggestions to help the Session, contact an elder. The Session loves your input! The new church directory is being printed with 39 photos of members and friends. Thank you to Darla and Julie for doing all of the scheduling and rescheduling. You did an awesome job!! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! Our next Session meeting will be September 13. It will be a joint meeting with the Deacons. Elders and Deacons, mark your calendars!! The meeting closed at 8:35 P.M. with prayer. Respectfully submitted, Kathy Poulton, Clerk of Session

When God created man, He communicated with him, and as a result we have the Bible, our one sure guide in an unsure world. As somebody has said, It is the heart of God in the words of God. In Psalm 119, the Word of God is called the law of the Lord, the testimony of the Lord, His precepts, His statutes, His commandments, His judgments, our counselor, and a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. We are told to walk in it, learn it, take heed to it, not wander from it, to hide it in our hearts, to rejoice in it, to meditate in it, to delight in it. Here again this is just a sample, but perhaps the key point it to keep or obey. The Word of God keeps us from being ashamed; it enables a young man to cleanse his way. When hidden in the heart it keeps us from sinning against Him. It revives us when our souls cleave unto the dust, it refreshes and restores us, it teaches us the fear of the Lord and enable us to walk in liberty. It comforts us in our affliction and guides us in wisdom and understanding. If you have a need, come to Him. Come to His Word just as you are. Ruth Bell Graham From her speech at the Congress on World Evangelization in Lausanne, Switzerland, in July 1974

7 Committee Reports FINANCE REPORT We on the Finance Committee take very seriously our pledge to be good stewards of the church s money, or the money that you and other s give so generously to support our church. The definition of stewardship is one who manages another s property, finances, or other affairs. This month, give some thought to what you see ahead. Try to describe one or two things you would like to see happen in our church, which contributes to fulfilling our Mission here in the Mini-Cassia Area. We would love to have some feedback of projects or things you feel we could do better, or try to accomplish! Let s all join together with joyous hearts and let people know that we are living and vibrant! Yours in Christ s Service Your Finance team FELLOWSHIP Sept. 3rd - Celebrating George and Susan McGee's 50th Wedding Anniversary after Worship. Respectfully submitted, Terrie Shockey A very special thank you to Terrie Shockey, Lee Bay, Darla Holl and Kathleen Morgan for covering the office during my vacation. You are appreciated! God Bless You! Barbra 7 Page 7 MISSIONS & EVANGELISM September 3 rd, Communion Sunday,we will receive the gifts in kind: food, paper products and home necessities for the Helping Hands food bank in Burley. This is a continuing need that satisfies the hunger of needy families in our own neighborhood. Thank you for you continuing support of this effort. Prepare for taking part in the special offering taken on World Communion Sunday, October 1 st. The Peace and Global Witness Offering meets the needs of many different kinds of ministry across the world. Listen carefully to the Minutes for Mission in September. The Kairos prison ministry, bringing the love of God to inmates at the Idaho State Correctional Institution, will be conducting the 18 th 4-day retreat in October. You can truly help by praying for the men inside and the volunteers conducting the retreat in October for there is an extraordinary amount of spiritual opposition to this enterprise. If you would like to help fund this effort, any amount will help us to procure the songbooks at $13 each or meals for participants at $5. Designated gifts are always welcome and appreciated. Thank you for your cheerful giving. Respectfully submitted: George McGee
