1 First Presbyterian Church, Twin Falls Idaho THE TRUMPET JULY 2016 PASTOR PHIL S MESSAGE What s a Christian to do Regarding Today s Politics? As we celebrate our nation s birthday at the beginning of July we will do so with the specter of being inundated by national politics, which are even more dysfunctional than ever, as the two political parties meet for their national conventions at the end of July. So what s a Christian to do? Psalm 146 offers some suggestions. First: no matter which candidate you support, only God deserves our praise. Psalm 146 begins with the command, Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD, O my Soul! I will praise the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God all my life long (vv. 1-2). Second: put your trust in something eternal. Psalm 146 warns us, Do not put your trust in princes, in mortals, in whom there is no help. When their breath departs, they return to the earth; on that very day their plans perish (vv. 3-4). Third: don t expect a candidate to make you happy. Every person ever elected has broken promises, but we can have unreserved confidence in our God. Happy are those whose help is in the God of Jacob, says Psalm 146, whose hope is in the LORD their God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; who keeps faith forever (vv. 5-6). Fourth: vote the Lord s values. Psalm 146 says that God is the one who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets the prisoners free; the LORD opens the eyes of the blind (vv. 7-8). These are God s values and while Christians will debate the ways that our society can address these concerns, there should be no disagreement about their priority to God. Fifth: take the long view. As Christians, the most important leader in our lives is Almighty God, whom we know in Jesus Christ and Psalm 146 reminds us that the LORD will reign forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the LORD! (v. 10). No matter what happens in either Cleveland or Philadelphia; praise the Lord, because Jesus is our Lord & Savior! 1 INSIDE THIS ISSUE Pastor s Message..... 3 PRESBYTERY OF KENDALL PRAYERS FOR IDAHO FALLS First Presbyterian Church, Idaho Falls, invites you to rejoice with us and give thanks for 125 years of ministry and mission. As we look to the future, we pray that this time of transition between pastors will lead us to new possibilities, renewed vitality and purpose, and witness in the community. Pray for the Pastor Nominating Committee to be guided by God's wisdom; pray for the Transitional Pastor, staff and Session to serve as partners in Christ's mission; and pray for the congregation to be empowered and encouraged by the presence of the Spirit. MISSION NEWS The Mission Committee hosted twenty three (23) 4K for Cancer runners that came through Twin Falls on Tues., June 28 th with a dinner that night and then a lighter breakfast early Wed., June 29 th before heading off for New York. It was a delight to see these young college students so inspired to be running for someone special in each of their lives. They run for two miles, then some others take their place; all in all, each of them run approximately 16 miles a day. It s a 49 day commitment so by the time they get to New York, each will have run approximately 645 miles! They started in San Francisco, going through Oregon, Washington and now Idaho; this was their 9 th day on Wed., coming in from Boise. They so appreciated being able to stay at our church, sleeping in the Fireside room & recreational room, having showers after so hot of a day Wed., and being fed. Both times after they were through eating, many would start clearing the tables & bringing the left overs into the kitchen, even though we kept telling them we would do this and for them to just relax. Really a very nice group of college kids. Every morning before leaving for the day, they form a circle, hold hands, and then each one of them say a name for whom they are running; then they give a chant. They asked us to join them so this was really special for us as well. It does your heart good to see young people doing so much good. The Mission Committee Robin Olszynski, Darryl Norenberg & Margie Howard A little note from the New York team Dear First Presbyterian Church, The fact that you opened your doors to 4k for the past 7 years is truly amazing and the whole 4k organization is grateful. Thank you for providing us a place to sleep, hot showers, and hot meals. Along with your smiles these things go a long way being a 4k runner especially when we have long, hot days like yesterday. Thank you! Team New York
