The PNC has called the Reverend Jeffrey Lang to serve our church. The arrival of autumn and cooler, crisper days brings new energy and anticipation to First Presbyterian. Our congregation has waited a long time for our new minister. We as a church are eager to welcome him and his family to their new home in Glendale. Glendale Presbyterian was ably served by temporary supply pastors and will continue using them until the arrival of our new pastor at the end of October. The Reverend Don Smith will be serving our church as pastor for the first three weeks in October. The Reverend Jeffrey Lang will preach his first sermon as our pastor on October 28. Let's invite friends and relatives to fill the pews that day to welcome Pastor Lang! Meet our Staff The Rev. Jeffrey Lang Pastor presbylang@yahoo.com Amy Duke Director of Music and Organist jbduke@cinci.rr.com Kate Gardin Choir Director gardinki@mail.uc.edu Deborah Senile Administrative Assistant glenpres@fuse.net Have you seen the hand sanitizer stands in the Narthex and the Church House? They are beautiful additions to the church, and a lovely way to make hand sanitizer available to all who wish to use it. Thank you, Dick Ohlinger, for sharing your amazing woodworking skills with us. The literature rack in the Narthex has been reorganized and stocked with new brochures and other items. You may take, free of charge, any item or items you wish. Thank you, Deacons, for taking on this task.
2 Some people are kind, polite, and thoughtful until you try to sit in their pews. We will soon begin our time together, life in common, as my family and I arrive in Glendale later next month. I suspect many of us are wondering what God might have in store for us and what the future holds as we endeavor to live in community as disciples of Christ. As I reflect on those sort of questions, I think about a few verses midway through the letter to the Ephesians. Paul writes in Ephesians 3:20-21 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen. The passage is an assertion that the power of God is always present in our lives. That contention is advanced further as Paul declares that God s powerful presence accomplishes far more than we can either ask God for or even comprehend. As I read this doxological exclamation, it seems to me to at least suggest that what we do for the sake of the good, for the gospel, ripples out into the future and echoes into eternity. What we do matters. How we live has consequences. Our worship, our prayers, our mutual love, our service to others all have meaning and bring God glory as God s purposes are accomplished through us. Ephesians 3:20-21 is a call to trust that God is at work in our lives together, in the church, in community, to advance the rule and reign of Christ in the world. I look forward to my arrival in Glendale. I trust that wonderful things are in store for all of us! As we keep our aim on sharing with others the love we have encountered in Jesus Christ, we can anticipate that, in our common life and ministry as a church family, God will do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think. See you in about a month! In Christ who conquers, Jeffrey We extend our sympathy to the family of former member Bill Clegern, who died August 31, Please keep the Clegern family in your thoughts and prayers as they transition to life without their beloved Bill. Bill s memorial service was held at Knox Church on Saturday, September The Deacons offer prayer, companionship, rides, or meals, but don t always know where care is needed. If you know of a need (your own or another s), call the church or any of our Deacons: Betty R (moderator), Susan G, Nancy G, Sarah H, Sonya K, Susy S In our thoughts and prayers Chuck B (friend of Carol M), Mike Blackburn, Todd B (son of Ruth B; step-brother of Pam C), William B, William G, Carol H, Jane K, Greg K, Tinci K(aunt of Shannon K), Donna L, Eloise M, Jackie O
3 Many folks want to serve God, but only as advisors. The Pastor Nominating Committee is happy to announce that the congregation unanimously supported Reverend Jeffrey Lang s terms of call at the last Congregational meeting! Reverend Lang is continuing to study and is working on his Doctor of Ministry. He is currently serving at Beaver- Butler Presbytery in West Sunbury, PA. He and Kimberly are the parents of three. Their oldest, Paisley, is attending seminary. Their son Pelham works as a Presbyterian campgrounds keeper, and their youngest, Phoebe, is entering the eighth grade. The PNC met most of the family when they were here for the neutral pulpit and were totally enchanted with Kimberly and their daughters Paisley and Phoebe. Reverend Lang is bringing many gifts to our church. He is a firm believer in bottom up, collaborative leadership and we feel he will work well with our session and the committees in our church. He feels called to collaborate with a congregation in which there is enthusiasm for living out the Gospel in practical ways in its local community and wider world; a congregation which makes room for and respects differing opinions, manifests a strong sense of connection and relationships between and among its members, and is able to both value traditional reformed faith and practice while remaining open-minded and curious. That describes Glendale First and where we want to be. He understands and appreciates the care we give, not only to the community, but to each other. He was quickly able to discern from his visits with us that we are a church that likes to spend time with each other and work with each other. He will continue to nurture these relationships as well as those with the community. He believes in reaching out to the community and building relationships with those around us, and he will help us build on the relationships we already have. The PNC feels Rev. Lang will be able to help continue with transformation processes and build upon them. He believes in radical hospitality interwoven with the lessons Jesus taught us. Help us in welcoming Reverend Jeffery Lang and his family to Glendale Presbyterian Church. They will arrive October 22, and his first Sermon will be October 28. There will be an installation service for Rev. Lang in November. We re hoping for a date early in the month to avoid the holiday rush. Watch the bulletin and newsletter for more information as it becomes available. 3

5 People are funny; they want the front of the bus, the middle of the road, and the back of the church. Follow up on Fellowship Dinner at Vincenzo s Twenty-one friends from this church and several from Springdale Presbyterian Church enjoyed a delicious pasta dinner at Vincenzo s on August 29. Good food, good conversation, good friends! Glendale Directory With Susan Armstrong s help, a mailing was made to new Glendale residents offering to include them in the first addendum to the Glendale Directory. A response automatically includes them in the directory. Directories are now selling at $5.00 each. Profit from Directory sales is now at $1, If you have a new neighbor, the Directory is the perfect welcome gift. They are available in many Village shops and in the Church House. If you can t find one, find Dave Conyers instead; he knows where the stash is! Golf Outing - Saturday, October 27 As you may remember, we had a tremendous amount of rain on September 8, which resulted in a rain out for the Golf Outing. The suggested new date coincided with a home Bengals game, so we eventually settled on Saturday, October 27; same time, same place. One of the outing planners has guaranteed a beautiful, sunny, early-fall day. We hope he s right! Food Offering - Sunday, October 21. For the food offering this month, we re asking you to bring toilet tissue instead of food items. Valley Interfaith Community Resource Center will use your generous donations to assist families in the valley area. Thanksgiving Boxes Your mission committee will again be working with Chief Dave Warman to provide 25 Thanksgiving boxes for needy families in the Glendale area. You will see more information about this important collection in early November. Fellowship Dinner at Century Inn Tuesday, October 16; 6:00pm The menu selections are North Atlantic Salmon, Baby Back Ribs, and Grilled Herbed Chicken. (Details and prices on the Church House bulletin board.) Please use the sign-up sheet on the Church House bulletin board to let us know you re coming. 5

We need more hands (at least four - a.k.a. two warm bodies) to make this work. The teens and tweens are to bring board games they like to play. 8 Answer: B (See Numbers 27:1-11. Finding our range While visiting a church, Robert Neff learned a lesson about the body of Christ. As he listened to a tenor s faltering voice, he noticed worshipers pulling out hymnals to locate the soloist s song. By the second verse, the congregation had joined the soloist in the hymn, Neff says. By the third verse the tenor was beginning to find the range. By the fourth verse, it was beautiful. And on the fifth verse, the congregation was absolutely silent, and the tenor sang the most beautiful solo of his life. Neff concludes: This is life in the body of Christ, enabling one another to sing the tune Christ has given us. from Witnesses of a Third Way First Presbyterian Church, Glendale 155 East Fountain Avenue, Glendale, OH Phone Fax glenpres@fuse.net firstpresbyterianglendale.org Mailed to you with Christian love Worship - 10:30am Though daughters weren t allowed to inherit property, some young women whose father had died appealed to the community s leaders to change the law in their favor - and it was done!
