The MESSENGER The Worship committee is pleased to report that we have hired a new Choir Director! She is accepting a new position, but is a familiar face. It is Kate Gardin, our current soprano from CCM. Kate is very excited to serve as our Choir Director and the choir is very excited to work with her. Kate will begin her duties in September. It is a good fit all around and I hope you will take the time to congratulate her when you see her. Kate will be helping us find a new soprano to fill her spot in the choir. We will miss her lovely voice, but look forward to seeing her direct our wonderful choir. m What a day! Saturday June 17, 2017 Our seventh annual Fill the Glendale Village Square with Food event - a First Presbyterian Church exclusive! Once again, we filled the Valley Community Resource Center truck with food, personal care items, and cleaning products. We also had donations of $ in cash and checks. The full truck will provide help to many in the Valley area. Our sincere thanks to The Mission Committee, everyone who donated items, and everyone who provided assistance for this annual Mission event. m

Dear Friends in Christ, We live in dangerous times. Earlier this week a peaceful baseball practice by members of the Congress was turned into a bloody scene of carnage as a disgruntled and perhaps deranged gunman unleashed a barrage of bullets. Representative Steve Scalise remains seriously wounded. Yesterday we learned of the tragic death of our own Cincinnati native Otto Wambier who was returned from his mistreatment by the North Koreans in a coma. Recent attacks in London and Manchester remind us of too many other incidents where jihadist extremists executed their deadly plans to terrorize the West. We pray for Steve Scalise, the Warmbier family and victims of terrorist and hate everywhere. Bombs and bullets are not the only threat to our safety and peace with the power to destroy. We live in a nation divided where daily hateful words are spoken, gruesome acts are depicted, and violent protesters take to the streets. Do not return evil for evil. In his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus exhorts us, In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets. (Matthew 7:12) During these summer months seek a peaceful place for your soul. Re-read the Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 5-7. I offer this prayer from the ancient Christian community of Northumbria: Calm me, O Lord, as You stilled the storm. Still me, O Lord, keep me from harm. Let all the tumult within me cease. Enfold me, Lord, in Your peace. Father, bless the work that is done, and the work that is to be. Father, bless the servant that I am, and the servant that I will be. Thou Lord and God of power, shield and sustain me this night. I will lie down this night with God, and God will lie down with me; I will lie down this night with Christ, and Christ will lie down with me; I will lie down this night with the Spirit, and the Spirit will lie down with me; God and Christ and the Spirit, be lying down with me. The peace of God be over me to shelter me, under me to uphold me, about me to protect me, behind me to direct me, ever with me to save me. The peace of all peace be mine this night in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Your fellow traveler in Christ, Pastor Steve m

The Deacons offer prayer, companionship, rides, or meals, but don t always know where care is needed. If you know of a need (your own or another s), call the church or any of our Deacons: Sylvia Allen, Susan Galbraith, Nancy Gulick, Betty Robertson, Sarah Hinkle, and Sonya Kirkland. Leading through In our thoughts and prayers Mike Blackburn, William Breidenstein, Bill Clegern, Susan Galbraith, Nancy Gulick, Jane Kendrick, Greg Kiefer, Donna Loudon, Eloise Manhart, Jackie Ohlinger, Gen Proud, Rebecca Richardson, Bailey Warner m Good luck Tyler! We will miss you! We are continuing the tradition of using Lay Readers during our more relaxed Summer Worship. Won t you consider reading one Sunday? Pastor Steve will supply the passages to read; this is your chance to participate in the worship service. There is a sign-up sheet posted on the bulletin board in the Church House. Please take a moment to sign up, it is fun and requires very little time. m

May we think of freedom not as the right to do as we please but as the opportunity to do what is right. - Pater Marshall May The Pastor Nominating Committee is happy to inform you that Session has approved our Ministry Information Form. This form is posted to the website for Pastoral Candidates to see and reply to. The PNC is now able to move to the next phase, which is to create questions for interviews and to start reviewing applications. Your PNC Beverly Brueggeman, Addison Clipson, Charlotte Knowlton, Karen Reynolds, and Mary Schwaderer. m Year to Date Income $3,544 $154,010 Expense $10,029 $157,158 Net ($6,485) ($3,148) Building and Workmen have been seen around the church the past two months. The office has had a fiber optic cable installed for the telephone and internet service. The aging roof over the kitchen and the Walker Building has been replaced. Grounds Committee During the month of July, work should begin on repairing and sealing the brick facade of both the Church and the Church House. A chimney on the manse will be repaired, too. There will be a large amount of scaffolding and lift equipment involved in this job. Please be careful when visiting the church during the week, 8:00am to 4:00pm. David Brown has been instrumental in getting the roof replacement completed, and obtaining the contract for the brick repair. He was able to obtain a Grant from the Proctor Fund to help pay for this expensive project. Discussion is on-going regarding the repair of the rose windows and other window alterations in the Church. Several members have been working to make the patio and other garden areas bloom with colorful flowers. They include Pat and Stu Clipson, Susy Spence, and friend, and Tom Shevlin. Jane Johnson, with the help of others, has cleaned up the stage in the Church House. Dick Ohlinger, as always, comes to the rescue when a sump pump in the basement fails, or fluorine light bulbs stop working. The above is only a partial list of those helping around the church. I believe every contribution counts, and everyone is important to the life and work of the church. Thanks to all of you! m

Always be a little kinder than necessary.. - J.M. Barrie All men are invited to join the Men s Group for lunch at Gold Star Chili on Springfield Pike in Springdale on Wednesday, July 12 and at Skyline on Springfield Pike in Woodlawn on Wednesday, August 9. Lunch begins at 12:30pm. Bob Weston, Committee on Ministry liaison, was our guest at the Session Meeting held on 17 May He has been working with our Pastoral Nominating Committee (PNC). Mr. Weston provided an overview of the efforts the PNC has made and what they will be doing in the future. Jane Simpson was elected to be our Presbytery Commissioner for the 12 September 2017, Presbytery Meeting at Blue Ash Presbyterian Church. Carol Faulkner was elected to be the Presbytery Commissioner for the 14 Nov 2017, Presbytery Meeting at Knox Presbyterian Church. Keep checking the church website (first presbyterianglendale.org) as Reverend Garstad continues to add information, the latest happenings, and news. The monthly newsletters are there, as are the weekly sermons. Great place to keep up with the church! We are still looking for a volunteer to be trained as our Web Master. If you might be interested in acquiring a new skill, contact Reverend Garstad or any Session Member for more information. Weekly average attendance for April was 39. Total April attendance was 156. A Manual of Administrative Operations is being developed. It will cover responsibilities of the Session Moderator, Clerk of Session, and all the Session Committees. It will, also, include a Church Facilities Use Policy, Sexual Misconduct Policy, Wedding Policy, etc. We hope to have it finished by our Annual Congregational Meeting so it can be officially approved. Reverend Garstad is coordinating with the Altar Guild to come up with dates for the training of volunteers to serve the traditional Lord s Supper. Peter Galbraith is working on a form to be completed by those requesting use of the church facilities. It will provide church guidelines, and policies and procedures for those wishing to use our buildings. It will provide the Session information on why they wish to use our facilities, how many people expected, etc. The form will be a helpful tool for both the church and the person(s) requesting to use the church. Session approved not having a Session Meeting for the month of July. m

The idea of a spiritual heart transplant is a vivid image to me; once you have the heart of somebody else inside you, then that heart is there. Jesus heart is inside me, and my heart is gone. So if God were to place a stethoscope against my chest, he would hear the heart of Jesus Christ beating. - Max Lucado First Presbyterian Church, Glendale 155 East Fountain Avenue, Glendale, OH Phone Fax glenpres@fuse.net firstpresbyterianglendale.org Mailed in Christian love on June 26, 2017 Worship - 10:30am Sparrow Birds, in general, symbolize God s presence. Sparrows represent God s concern and care even for those thought insignificant. In Jesus words, Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father s care. So don t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. (Matthew 10:29, 31, NIV)
