First Presbyterian Church of York The Service of Installation for The Rev. Christopher Kyle Gott and The Rev. Allison Jan Beaulieu April 29, A.M. PRELUDE How Lovely, Lord Hopson WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Elder Susan Dunham WE GATHER AS GOD S PEOPLE *CALL TO WORSHIP Rev. Aaron Cope Leader: Praise the Lord, all you people. People: Sing to God, all you heavenly hosts. Leader: We are called to be God s people, People: A royal priesthood, and a holy nation, Leader: To proclaim aloud the Lord's name, People: To tell all the world the wonders of the Lord s works; Leader: For the Lord satisfies the thirsty People: And fills the hungry with good things. Leader: The Lord has pity on the lowly and the poor, People: And the Lord redeems the lives of those who call upon his name. Leader: Whom shall the Lord send to them, and who will go for us? People: Here am I, Lord! Send me. * Please stand if you are able.
*HYMN No. 35 Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty BAC DAEEAC UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION Elder Nan Best Almighty God, by water and the Spirit, you baptized us to be your own and called the church into being. We confess that we hold back the love of your Spirit among us. We do not listen for your word of grace, speak the good news of your love, or live as a people made one in Christ. Have mercy on us, O God. Transform our lives by the power of your Holy Spirit; and make strong our common witness to the one Lord, our Savior, Jesus Christ. SILENT PRAYERS OF CONFESSION ASSURANCE OF PARDON Elder Nan Best Leader: God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which God loved us, even when we were dead through our sin, made us alive together with Christ and raised us up with him. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God. Friends, believe the good news of the Gospel. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. *THE PASSING OF THE PEACE Elder Nan Best Leader: Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts. To this peace we were called as members of a single body. The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. (The congregation is invited to greet one another with words and signs of peace.) *GLORIA PATRI (Hymn No. 579)
WE LISTEN FOR GOD S WORD CHILDREN S BLESSING CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE We love you with the love of the Lord; we love you with the love of the Lord, We see in you, the glory of our King, and we love you with the love of the Lord. Children (Kindergarten through 3 rd Grade) are invited to attend Sermon Time for Children in Room 210. UNISON PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Elder Emily Clark O God, whom we long to know, O Burning Fire within our souls, grant us the tongues of fire, the sound of rushing wind, Your descending Holy Spirit; that in knowing your Word, we might know your presence; that in following your ways, we might live in your light. Amen. OLD TESTAMENT READING: Psalm 133 (from The Message ) The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Elder Emily Clark NEW TESTAMENT READING: Galatians 3:23-29 Elder John Jack Hynd (Pew Bible Page No. 1130, Large Print Bible Page No. 1813) The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. SERMON Separate but Equal Are You Kidding? The Rev. Guy Dunham *HYMN No. 450 Be Thou My Vision S>NCA
WE RESPOND TO GOD S WORD PRESENTATION OF OFFERINGS AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION Elder Susan Dunham A portion of the offering today will go toward the Presbytery of Donegal s Pastors Emergency Fund which provides assistance to pastors who are experiencing tough times personally and professionally. INSTALLATION ANTHEM God Gives Us Each Other Beaulieu/Spark/ Gott Verse 1 Stumbling in the dark, light ceases to be No reflection in the mirror, how tarnished a soul can be. We make mistakes; we let God down, But it's in God's embrace that we are found. We're forgiven, loved and free to be strong for each other, A brother, a sister in need. Chorus But mighty is our God, who sees past every stain And gives us each other, calls us by our name, Gives us each other, to bear each others' pain. Verse 2 Gifts are all around, but the cup is still half full Always coming up short, no one to help pull Then God sends a partner, to walk the path with you, Working together, to better, the way that equals do. Chorus Ending We're forgiven, loved and free to be strong for each other, A brother, a sister in need. *DOXOLOGY (Hymn No. 592)
SERVICE OF INSTALLATION Presbytery Moderator Doug Good AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Leader: As in one body we have many parts and each part has its own function, so all of us together with Christ are one body; and we all belong to each other. People: We have different gifts according to the grace God has given us. Leader: If your gift is to hear God s Word, People: Speak it out in faith. Leader: If your gift is service, People: Live to serve others. Leader: If your gift is the heart of a teacher, People: Teach what is true. Leader: Let preachers preach with conviction and givers give freely; People: Let officers work diligently for the people, and let those who serve the poor serve gladly. Leader: Let us not lack for enthusiasm, but be ardent in spirit, People: Serving the Lord, rejoicing in hope, patient in suffering, constant in prayer, supporting one another, and welcoming all. STATEMENT ON THE MINISTRY OF THE CHURCH We are called out by God to be the church of Jesus Christ, a sign in the world today of the new life that God intends for all. In our life together we are to display the new reality that sin is forgiven, reconciliation accomplished, and the dividing walls of hostility torn down. Today we reclaim our historic calling and remember the great ends of the church: The proclamation of the gospel for the salvation of humankind; the shelter, nurture, and spiritual fellowship of the children of God; the maintenance of divine worship;
the preservation of the truth; the promotion of social righteousness; and the exhibition of the Kingdom of Heaven to the world. The ministry of the church is shared by pastor and people, so that all together may fulfill the mission to which we are called in Jesus Christ. The particular responsibility of the ministry of the Word and Sacrament is to build up the church and serve the people of God, so that the Word may be rightly proclaimed and the sacraments rightly celebrated. The call to this ministry has been extended by the congregation, accepted by the candidates, and approved by the presbytery. Therefore the Presbytery of Donegal, by means of this commission, now installs Rev. Allison Beaulieu and Rev. C. Kyle Gott as co-pastors of First Presbyterian Church. In their baptism, Kyle and Allison were clothed with Christ. Each was ordained to the ministry of Word and Sacrament and is now called by God, through the voice of this church, to serve as co-pastors of this congregation. We remember with joy our common calling to serve Christ, and we celebrate God s call to our brother and sister in Christ to serve among us as co-pastors. CONSTITUTIONAL QUESTIONS QUESTIONS TO THE CONGREGATION Leader: Do we, the members of the church, accept the Rev. Allison J. Beaulieu and the Rev. C. Kyle Gott as our Co-Pastors, chosen by God through the voice of this congregation, to lead us in the way of Jesus Christ? Congregation: We do. Leader: Do we agree to encourage them, to respect their decisions, and to follow as they guide us, serving Jesus Christ, who alone is Head of the church? Congregation: We do. Leader: Do we promise to pay them fairly and provide for their welfare as they work among us; to stand by them in trouble and share their joys? Will we listen to the word they preach, welcome their pastoral care, and honor their authority as they seek to honor and obey Jesus Christ our Lord? Congregation: We do.

The PC(USA) Seal The seal of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is a symbolic statement of the church's heritage, identity, and mission in contemporary form. Its power depends on both its simplicity and complexity, as well as its traditional and enduring qualities. The basic symbols in the seal are the cross, Scripture, the dove, and flames. Because of its association with Presbyterian history, the Celtic cross was chosen as a model for this contemporary rendering of the ancient symbol. The two center lines of the cross represent an open book, emphasizing the central role of Scripture in the Reformed tradition. The descending dove is the traditional symbol of the Holy Spirit. It also symbolizes Christ s baptism by John and the peace and wholeness which Christ s death and resurrection bring to a broken world. Beneath the image of the book is the suggestion of a lectern or pulpit, which captures the important role of preaching the history of Presbyterian worship. Integrated into the lower part of the design are flames which form an implied triangle, a traditional symbol of the Trinity. The flames themselves convey a double meaning. They may be interpreted as a symbol of revelation in the Old Testament when God spoke to Moses from the burning bush. The flames also suggest the beginning of the Christian church when Christ manifested himself to his apostles at Pentecost and charged them to be messengers of the good news of God's love. The triangle also suggests the nature of Presbyterian government, with its concern for balance and order, dividing authority between ministers of the Word and laypersons and between different governing bodies in the life of the church. The seal of the Presbyterian Church (USA) was designed by Malcolm Grear of Providence, Rhode Island. First Presbyterian Church of York 225 East Market Street York, Pa
