Delegates, Welcome to Moody Model UN! We are excited to have you in our committee! This committee is made up of members of the Order of the Phoenix and Dumbledore s Army. We are a crisis committee, so something could happen at any time; this will cause the committee to have to create more or rethink previous solutions. Also, while the conference s dress code is Western business attire, for this committee, costumes are strongly encouraged. We hope you will have as much fun with this as we will! Sincerely, Your committee chairs Riley Speidell & Lacey Wortzel Lacey Wortzel is an 8th grader at Moody and a captain on the softball team. She has participated in TESMUNC at Trinity Episcopal School and GSMUN at Maggie Walker Governor s School. She enjoys playing travel softball, baking, eating, and constantly rereading the Harry Potter series. Riley Speidell is also an 8th grader at Moody. She is captain of the cheerleading squad and softball team. Riley is one of the four officers of the Student Council and a member of the Future Business Leaders of America and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Like Lacey, Riley participated in TESMUNC at Trinity Episcopal School and GSMUN at Maggie Walker Governor s School as well. Outside of school, Riley dances for the Central Virginia Dance Academy and has been for the past decade. She also enjoys spending time with her friends, swimming, and reading (particularly the Harry Potter books).

Committee Overview Committee Information: The Harry Potter committee takes place during the Deathly Hallows book; however, the events of the committee may not mirror the book exactly. Your committee assignments will reflect this time period, as particular characters cannot be a part of the committee due to certain events. Harry, Ron, and Hermione are not a part of the committee as many of our issues focus on them and they are not currently in contact with anyone. This committee will not require a full position paper, but you will need to write two paragraphs in preparation for the conference. The first paragraph will consist of background information on the topics and your character. It should include past events but no future events, as your characters do not know what is going to happen and our course of action may differ from the book. The second paragraph should consist of what your character s opinion/bias on the topics would be, and what you think they would propose as a solution. There are no wrong ideas. You can to paraphrase the background guide, but feel free to use the Harry Potter books and other websites as additional sources. DO NOT PLAGIARIZE. You are not required to cite the books, but please cite online sources using MLA format. Our only formatting requirement is that the paragraphs be double spaces and the font should be readable. Please have your paragraphs printed and ready to turn in by the start of the first committee session. We will be not be grading them, but we will comment on them and hand them back to you. If you have any questions at all, feel free to us at hcps-wortzellj@henricostudents.org.

Background Information: Today is September 3, Harry, Ron, and Hermione infiltrated the Ministry of Magic yesterday. Their reasoning for visiting the Ministry is unknown. Previously, they were staying at Number 12 Grimmauld Place, but currently, their whereabouts are unknown. The Order of the Phoenix has called an emergency meeting to choose its next course of action. The Order is in a state of total disarray. Dumbledore, the leader of the organization, died over three months ago. His killer was none other than Severus Snape, who was a double agent and the Order s key source of information on the Death Eaters. We do not know how to proceed or what to do next. Meanwhile, the Ministry of magic has been taken over as of August 1, the date of Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour s wedding. Pius Thicknesse is the Minister of Magic, and we are fairly sure that he is under the imperius curse. Other powerful Ministry members include Dolores Umbridge, Corban Yaxley, and Albert Runcorn, with Yaxley being a known Death Eater. Remember that we must remain in secrecy. I. Order of the Phoenix The first committee topic will mostly relate to the Order of the Phoenix. We need to discuss leadership and safety. Our previous headquarters, located at number 12 Grimmauld Place, has been deemed unsafe as Severus Snape has access. While Mad-Eye Moody set up enchantments to keep Snape from sharing the location with others, it is foolish to keep using the location as headquarters. We need to decide on a new headquarters, and figure out ways to keep it safe, secret, and protected. In addition to finding a headquarters, we also need to pick a new leader. Dumbledore was in charge of the Order until his death, and we have been operating without a leader for over three months. While we agree that none of us has the wisdom or intuition of Dumbledore, we need someone in charge to guide us and have the final say. Next, we need ways to recruit new members for the Order of the Phoenix. We need to figure out who we can trust and how we can convince them to join. We also need to formulate a plan to regain control of the Ministry. The majority of the magical population

does not realize the Ministry has been corrupted. Ideally, we would like to regain control before the public realizes something has gone wrong. Finally, the members of the Order need to remain safe. The Ministry of Magic is hunting down people who do not support their new policies. We need ways to contact each other that the Ministry will not be able to intercept, and we need to operate in secrecy, especially since so many of our members work for the Ministry. We also need to develop plans for what we will do if the Ministry tries to hunt us down. Questions to Consider: 1. Where will the new Order of the Phoenix headquarters be and how will we protect it? 2. Who will be the new leader of the Order? 3. How will new members of the Order be recruited? 4. How will we regain control of the Ministry of Magic? 5. How can Order members contact each other in secrecy? II. The Order s Objectives While there are many things that the Order of the Phoenix aims to do, our main and current goal is to locate Harry Potter, as well as Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. After the wedding of Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour, it was confirmed by Remus Lupin that they were staying at number 12 Grimmauld Place. However, their recent invasion of the Ministry of Magic has made their whereabouts unknown. Now, more than ever, it is important that we find them. The Ministry has named Harry the Undesirable No. 1, so the Death Eaters as well as high-ranking members of the Ministry are in search of Harry, Ron, and Hermione. In order for us to find them, we need to stay under the radar so that we are not exposed by other parties searching for them. During our meeting, we will discuss how to locate Harry, as well as make plans for what we will do when we locate him. It is likely that he will not share his plans and motives with us, given that he has refused to share them in the past and is still operating under Dumbledore s orders. As a result, we should also discuss ways to help him without him having to share his plans with us. Other objectives of ours include protecting muggles and students at Hogwarts. There are innocent lives in danger. In addition, we want to find out the Death Eaters plans. We need to

know what Voldemort is trying to do so that we can be there to stop him. Questions to Consider: 1. How can we locate Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger? 2. How can we help the trio without being caught? 3. What can be done to protect muggles from harm? 4. What can be done to protect students at Hogwarts? 5. How can we find out the Death Eaters plans and stop them? Position List: Remus Lupin Molly Weasley Minerva McGonagall Rubeus Hagrid Arthur Weasley Ginny Weasley Kingsley Shacklebolt Neville Longbottom Luna Lovegood
