4 Dear Friends, Our congratulations to those who were baptized, confirmed and received when the Bishop was with us on the 18th: Katherine Peterson, Eddie Peterson, Courtney Peterson, and Zac Fillhart. We welcome them all into Christ Church and this branch of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church. The rummage sale was once again a success. Our thanks to all who helped put this event on, especially Elizabeth Register and Anita Warner. As of this time the sale made approximately $5, which will go to our outreach programs. Sunday, May 20th, is the Day of Pentecost. It is on this day that we celebrate the fact that the disciples recognized that they were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to share the good news of the risen Christ with the world. The liturgical color for this day is red. You are encouraged to wear something red on this day. As we have done in the past, this day will be our parish picnic day. We will have crawfish as well as other goodies to eat along with fun and fellowship with our church family. Make your plans to attend. If you have a child graduating from high school or college this Spring please let us know as soon as possible. We will recognize our graduating seniors on the Day of Pentecost, Sunday, May 20th. Faithfully, Cecil 3

10 Backpack Buddies Ministry Backpack Buddies provides a bag of food each week for children in the Hancock and Bay- Waveland School schools who may not get food at home on the weekends. Christ Church, under the initial tutelage of First Baptist Church, has been providing food to 15 East Hancock Elementary School children for the school year. Predetermined foods that require little to no preparation or adult help are provided in a grocery bag that discretely fits into the childrens' backpacks. The Backpack Buddies volunteers at Christ Church have shopped, packed, and delivered bags. We're still ironing out our process to make us more efficient and cost effective but early estimates look like it costs us ~$5 per bag. This program has opened our eyes to a huge need in our own community. We hope to provide food to more children in need soon! 9

14 Breathing Under Water (Spirituality and the Twelve Steps) Four parishioners and four members of the community participated and thoroughly enjoyed their learning experience. The meetings were held at The Starfish Café. This program was coordinated by the Evangelism committee to support their goal of "sharing our faith story" in the community at large. This series was led by Alice Baird. All are Welcome No Experience Needed No Classes to attend Thursdays at 12:00pm (noon) About Centering Prayer Centering Prayer is a receptive method of silent prayer that prepares us to receive the gift of contemplative prayer, in which we experience God's presence within us, closer than breathing, closer than thinking, closer than consciousness itself. This method of prayer is both a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship. Centering Prayer is not meant to replace other kinds of prayer. Rather, it adds depth of meaning to all prayer and facilitates the movement from more active kinds of prayer into a receptive prayer of resting in God. Centering Prayer emphasizes prayer as a personal relationship with God and as a movement beyond conversation with Christ to communion with Christ. Sponsored by Christ Episcopal Church Hosted by: Marcie Baria 13

17 May 27, 2018 Performing Artists - 4:00pm GULFPORT HIGH SCHOOL CHAMBER ORCHESTRA Most of the kids performing are going to Peru in July to play three performances with the Cusco Youth Orchestra. These concerts are part of the Cusco Music Festival that happens every year in July. These kids have been working very hard since last March to raise the money for the trip. It's going to be a great experience for them and for the Peruvian kids. We are going to visit the great historic places in the Cusco region including Machu Pichu. Chamber Orchestra is a vital part of the orchestra program at Gulfport High School. The Chamber Orchestra often performs for civic and community groups, as well as traveling internationally. The administration, faculty, and staff of the Gulfport School District take pride in being able to offer a full and varied instrumental music program. We presently offer string orchestra and small ensembles in grades four through twelve. In addition, we will offer full orchestra at the high school level. It is our goal to produce an outstanding orchestra, to develop in each student an appreciation of the art of music as part of general culture, to discover and develop 16

18 the talents of students in the field of orchestral music, and to develop students' knowledge and skills of listening to orchestra music, as well as reading and performing orchestral music throughout their life. Dr. Sasha Ferreira began his violin studies in Havana, Cuba. While there, he won first prize for the best interpretation of the Cuban music in the regional and national "Amadeo Roldán" violin competition, the most prestigious Cuban violin competition. He continued his studies at the National Conservatory of Music in Lima, Peru, graduating with honors in Recently, Sasha finished recording "Cuban Music...with a Violin Touch," his second compact disc as a soloist. As a soloist, Sasha has performed both with piano accompaniment and with orchestras throughout Peru, Venezuela, Brazil, Colombia, and the United States. From 1997 until 2007, Ferreira was a member of the Lima String Quartet. He was also a member of the Lima Philharmonic Orchestra's Soloists. Along with his performance career, he taught for many years at Markham College and the National Conservatory of Music in Lima, Peru. Sasha moved to the United States in 2007 and became an American citizen in May of He obtained his Master of Music degree in violin performance at the University of Southern Mississippi. In 2012, Sasha earned his Doctoral degree in violin and viola performance from The University of Georgia. Sasha is currently a faculty member of the Winter School of Music at William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and teaches at the Gulfport School District in Gulfport, Mississippi. He regularly performs as a soloist as well as with the Mobile Symphony Orchestra and the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra. Daniel began his cello studies at the age of nine in his hometown of San Pedro Sula, Honduras. He continued his studies at the Victoriano Lopez Music School in San Pedro Sula and in 2001 he entered The University of Southern Mississippi on a full scholarship, studying there with Dr. Alexander Russakovsky and serving as principal cellist in the university orchestra. After earning his Bachelor of Music 17

19 degree in 2006, he accepted a teaching position with the Gulfport School District Strings Program in Gulfport, Mississippi. In 2009, he was honored to take the position of Director of Orchestral Activities with the Gulfport School District. Daniel loves conducting, playing chamber music, and is currently a member of the Mobile, Gulf Coast Symphony, and Pensacola Symphony Orchestras. Since 2014, Mr. Martinez also serves at the music director and principal conductor for the Gulf Coast Symphony Youth Orchestra which includes some of the best high school orchestral players from the Mississippi Gulf Coast.Daniel is an avid follower of fútbol (or soccer) and spends much of his free watching both international and club matches. He, his wife, Catherine, and their cat, Stormy, are big fans of FC Barcelona. Visual Artist - 5:00pm Janet Densmore Graduating cum laude with a degree in Environmental Design from LSU, the artist completed independent studies in video 18

20 and 16mm film, then launched an underground theatre space in New England for drama, happenings, and video performance works. Her documentaries found diverse audiences from CBS' "60 Minutes" to the Museum of Modern Art NYC. One of 12 Americans to be screened at the Worldwide Video Festival, J. G. Densmore also earned recognition twice at Sundance Independent Film Institute for screenplays. She was awarded 1st place for non-fiction by the Deep South Writer's Association, was admitted into the Writer's Guild of America-East, has been published in national and international journals, and worked as a writer/producer for network and foreign television. She continues to create original stories, poetry, videos, and fine art. Her paintings are on display as a longtime member of Gallery 220, Bay St. Louis, the artist also accepts portrait commissions through Gallery 220 Bay St. Louis and Guy Lyman Fine Art New Orleans. ````````````````````````````````````````````````````` "4th Sunday at 4" is Christ Episcopal Church's gift to the Coastal Community. As such, "4th Sunday at 4" is free and open to the public. Also, no artist, performing or visual, is charged a fee to participate, nor is any commission or percentage taken by the church. All money in the "donation basket" is given to the performers, and all payments for art go directly to the artist. A church is seldom in a position to engage an entire community, but it can do its part by supporting one segment of a community. Christ Episcopal Church has chosen to do this by providing an ideal location for showcasing our local artists. For further information, contact: Church or Chairman:
