2 Pastor s note That they may all be one. -John 17:21 For the past few weeks, several of us have gathered on Tuesday mornings at 11:30 for a Bible study grounded in scripture but focused on the UCC s We Believe statements. They can be found on the UCC s website (ucc.org) in the extended format, but here are the basics of each belief statement: We believe in the triune God. We believe that each person is unique and valuable. We believe that each person is on a spiritual journey and that each of us is at a different stage of that journey. We believe that the persistent search for God produces an authentic relationship with God, engendering love, strengthening faith, dissolving guilt, and giving life purpose and direction. We believe that all of the baptized 'belong body and soul to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.' We believe that all people of faith are invited to join Christ at Christ's table for the sacrament of Communion. We believe the UCC is called to be a united and uniting church. We believe that God calls us to be servants in the service of others. We believe that the UCC is called to be a prophetic church. As in the tradition of the prophets and apostles, God calls the church to speak truth to power, liberate the oppressed, care for the poor and comfort the afflicted. We believe in the power of peace, and work for nonviolent solutions to local, national, and international problems. We are a people of possibility. In the UCC, members, congregations and structures have the breathing room to explore and to hear... for after all, God is still speaking,... These statements are a beautiful summary of who we are called to be as God s people. They demonstrate our hearts for God and our desire to be a community centered in God s love, working to make God s kingdom manifest here on earth where all are loved and equal. As we head into October, we will have several worship services focusing on our greater connection to the world for we truly are a global family. The first Sunday of October is World Communion Sunday and we will break bread from cultures all around the world, and we will take a special Neighbors in Need offering that supports the UCC s Justice & Witness Ministry. On October 21, we celebrate Bread for the World Sunday. We will worship outside and talk about how we can be a part of ending world hunger. On October 28, we will celebrate Reformation Sunday and consider the ways we continue to listen to where God calls us to reform. I encourage you to spend some time with our We Believe statements and look up the full version online. Ask God how you can live out these statements and be a part of making the world one. With all my love and gratitude for each and every one of you, Pastor Kelsey
