It was a pleasure to see many of you at officer s training and Home and Family Conference. As we prepare for the Putnam County Fair, I would like to remind you of upcoming happenings. Due to the closing of our local women s health club, I have designed a women s walking program within Putnam County. This walking program consist of weekly walks to have fun while incorporating a healthy lifestyle. An informational luncheon with our keynote speaker will take place on August 12, 2014, Putnam County Hospital. Also, if you or someone you know has Diabetes or is at risk for Diabetes, our upcoming session of Dining with Diabetes is for them. This 4 week session will teach core information about diabetes, and include recipes on cooking with Diabetes. The workshop is priced at $25.00 per person, which includes dinner with each lesson. 2 2 Club News and Notes: Allspice had a Summer Fling trip to Avon for dinner at Cheddar s and shopping in June, and assisted in Family Fun Day at the Fair; Boondock Pals held a recent meeting at Mill Pond and heard a lesson on How to Work Your Workout In ; Cloverdale Daytime Darlings held their May meeting at Martha s Orchard in Plainfield, and donated linens to Beyond Homeless; Club Sixteen had their June meeting at Fillmore Elementary School, and their Annual Picnic at the Double Decker in Greencastle; Country Bak n Bunch donated money for 4-H awards and elected new officers; Family, Friends, & Fun held their May meeting at the Putnam County Museum, and had a pitch-in for their June meeting; Happy Scrappers had a recent lesson on Artist Trading Cards; Heritage Heartland served breakfast as a fundraiser at the Heritage Lake Marina, and held their July meeting at the fairgrounds during lunch at Family Fun Day; Northern Town and Country Lights recently toured Beyond Homeless, and continues to call BINGO at area nursing homes and give out prizes; Photography Club hosted a photography workshop for 4-Hers and took a field trip to the Eiteljorg Museum to see the Ansel Adams exhibit; Sew Many Stitchers recently worked on making aprons from mens shirts, and traveled to Spencer to attend a lesson with the Blind Quilter, Elizabeth Burn; Tuesday Tigers had a lesson on Charitable Donations 101, and held their June meeting at the Olin Biology Building at De- Pauw. Make sure you send a Monthly Meeting Report to the Extension Office by snail mail or !] From the County President: We had a great time at Home and Family Conference. I hope more of our county members will put in for the First Timers Award next year. Remember that next year s Conference will be at Keystone at the Crossing in Indianapolis. Rita Reffett A new Master Gardener class will be starting on August 20, I want to encourage everyone interested in becoming Master Gardeners to contact me soon so I can set aside a place for you in the class. The class has limited space. The purpose of the Purdue Master Gardener Program is to teach people more about growing plants and to more effectively extend information related to plants. Its specific aim is to provide information and technical assistance in the areas of gardening and home horticulture through the use of trained and certified volunteers. After acceptance into the Master Gardener Program, participants receive training in the following areas: Plant Science, Plant Nutrition, Soil Science, Plant Disease, Insect Pests, Weeds, Pesticide Safety/Pesticide Alternatives, Woody Ornamentals, Vegetable Gardening, Herbaceous Ornamentals, Home Lawns, Animal Pests, Principles of Landscape Design, Home Fruit Production, Indoor Gardening, and Yard Waste Management. To be a part of the next series of Master Gardener classes please contact the Putnam County Extension Office and say that you are interested in the Master Gardner Class for the Fall You will need to complete an application form and return it to the Putnam County Extension Office. The classes meet every Wednesday night from 6-9 pm. The classes will last 12 weeks from August 20 th to Nov 5. To become a full fledged Master Gardener the program requires you to volunteer for a minimum of 35 hours. Throughout the class, there are opportunities to gain hours even before you have finished your class work. So join our next class and bring a friend. Currently, we are taking applications for the class. This class includes: Reference materials, professionals in the horticulture industry as speakers, and many handouts. The cost is $110. Family rates apply. We will be taking applications until August 12, If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact Ann or adelchambre@purdue.edu

3 3 Women Walk Putnam County is a new initiative geared especially for women. This program includes wellness checks, weekly walks, and much more.
