We also offer the following activities for children during worship: A supervised nursery for newborns through age 3, located next to the main entrance; Children's Circle for children ages 3 through 7, which meets in the basement during the second half of the worship service. 3

5 Congregational Announcements Please send your announcements to the office before 11:00am on Friday. The image on the cover of the bulletin comes from the IndyStar newspaper. It depicts Christ Church Cathedral Indianapolis s display protesting President Trump s immigration policy. Our theme through October 21 is People on the Move. The Narrative Lectionary texts for the year begin in the Old Testament, and movement and migration are key components of these biblical stories. The texts also coincide with MC USA s Learn, Pray, Join for Immigration Justice initiative (mennoniteusa.org/learn-pray-join-immigration-justice), and Peace Sunday. I openly invite you to engage with the Spirit as it guides us through this season of worship. ~Scott Troyer, as Worship Coordinator I would like to invite you to a performance at CMF on October 22, a Monday evening, at 8 pm. I ve been working lately with a group called Shakespeare s Band. The personnel are Suzanne Fleming Smith, actor, Jacqueline Stevens, soprano, Tina Gutierrez, renaissance flute, lute and renaissance guitar, Larry Brown, hurdy gurdy, and myself, lute and renaissance guitar. The program we re presenting, the ladies of Macbeth, is a work that combines music with the spoken word, mixing Shakespeare s monologues, specifically those of Lady Macbeth and the witches from his play Macbeth, with music from Shakespeare s time, in some cases referred to in the text of the play. The program has been enthusiastically received. We just did the show in Middletown this past week and it was a hit. The program runs about 45 minutes. There is no cost but donations will be accepted. I hope to see you there. I m very excited about this show. It s been a real treat to work with these skilled, creative people. ~Rod Stucky The CMF office is currently updating the Fall 2018 directory. This directory seeks to fully alphabetize entries by last name. There are a wide variety of reasons that a household might wish to appear in the directory without their names being listed alphabetically. The entries for those households that have already expressed their desire to be listed out of alphabetical order appear according to their wishes. Please check your household s entry and note any necessary corrections. Today is the deadline to submit corrections via the directory in the gathering area. John Kampen and Yvonne Zimmerman will again be leading a trip to Israel/Palestine for the Methodist Theological School in Ohio from June 14-28, There are some flyers in foyer about the trip. Feel free to get in touch with John. It would be great to have a few CMF ers join us. 5

6 Can you feel the excitement brewing? The CMF Youth Group will be starting their fundraising efforts for the MC USA Youth Convention with Menno's Best Coffee Sales today and continuing every third Sunday of the month. The Youth will be taking orders in the foyer immediately following the service. For each 12-oz package of fair-trade coffee sold (at $15 each), our youth group receives $6 back, plus $1 is donated toward MC USA peace and justice work. The coffee orders should be delivered within two weeks (first delivery would be Sunday, November 4). Please note: You can also make an individual purchase online at convention.mennoniteusa.org/mennos-best-coffee-fundraiser/shop/. On the checkout page, just be sure to designate CMF as the Youth Group you wish to support. Thanks so much! A note on last week s choral works: "The arranger of Wana Baraka is Shawn Kirchner. The composer of The Road Home is Stephen Paulus." CMF History Walking Tour: October 21 Come to a picnic today and learn more about the early days of CMF! After the worship service we will meet in Burnet woods in the area where the early church would often meet for services. After lunch there will be a guided walking tour in Clifton Heights to see the first church building, the VS unit houses, and other points of interest for CMF starting in the 1970's. Bring a packed lunch or stop for a sandwich on your way to the park. Directions will be provided. Make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes! Let Jean Swartley, Rosella Covington or Jim Miller know if you can come. Purpose and Identity Retreat: November 2 and 3 As a Christ-centered community, we seek to encounter and engage the movement of God s Spirit in our midst, and to discern where and how the Spirit is guiding us to grow beyond this present moment. With this intent, we will gather Friday evening, November 2 and Saturday morning, November 3, for a Purpose and Identity Retreat at CMF. Recognizing that life in community is complex, and in order to facilitate discernment and prayerful contemplation of our current identity, and where and how we imagine ourselves emerging into God s will for us, the Purpose and Identity Task Force has invited Troy Bronsink to facilitate the retreat. Troy is founder of the Hive: A Center for Contemplation, Art, and Action, and author of Drawn In: A Creative Process for Artists, Activists, and Jesus Followers. All are invited to participate in this weekend of holy work, even if you can only attend one of the two sessions. Child-care will be provided, as well as a simple supper Friday evening and a celebration meal Saturday afternoon to culminate the retreat. Central District Conference Mark your calendars for the 2019 CDC regional gatherings: January 26, 2019 (CDC Central, hosted by Open Table Mennonite Fellowship at Assembly Mennonite Church in Goshen, IN); February 9, 2019 (CDC West, hosted by Chicago Community Mennonite Church in Chicago, IL); March 9, 2019 (CDC East, hosted by First Mennonite Sugarcreek in Sugarcreek, OH); March 23, 2019 (CDC South, hosted by Berea Mennonite Church in Atlanta, GA). 7

8 Book Club will meet on Sunday, November 4 after church at the home of Jim and Joy Miller. The book to be discussed is "A Fort of Nine Towers" by Qais Akbar Omar. Please bring a dish to share. Join the Lunch Bunch to extend the conversation and fellowship after service each week. Sometimes we visit a local restaurant, sometimes we pack a lunch and dine here. Meet us around the round table in the gathering area if interested. Our Women s Group facilitator is Ann Schrock; please contact her to be added to list or with questions. The Men s Group meets every third Saturday of each month for breakfast all men are welcome. Coordinator: Jim Miller. If interested and not on Jim s list, please contact to be added.
