3 State of Our Savior s As we all patiently wait for Spring to arrive, as it seems to be taking its sweet ol time, I reflect on the opportunity of change and rebirth that the season will bring! This past year has been full of change and growth for our church and I wonder where our Spring will take us? In the past month, we have solidified a Call Committee. My deepest thanks goes to the individuals who have agreed to the call of serving on this committee. The Committee consists of the following people: Dave Bierle, Jacob Olson, Rich Shuenemen, Ross Berg, Brenda White, Heidi Bierle, Ruth Larson, Carol Foth, Rose Bruhschwein, Courtney Lloyd, Eliza Schuenemen The Call Committee will be meeting with Shar Gumke, from the Synod Office, on Wednesday April 18th to select a Leader and learn the next steps to be taken in our search for our next Pastor. The call process is not quick, and I have faith that these individuals, through their time, knowledge and faith, will thoroughly serve Our Savior s with their commitment to the process. I am excited to announce that there has been an offer extended to purchase the Valley View Parsonage. Pending an inspection, the sale should move forward smoothly. We look forward to helping Emmy, Searle, Freki the Dog and Sigrid in moving to the new parsonage, which will occur early May. I want to extend much gratitude to Pastor Kirsten, for shouldering Lent, Holy Week and Easter on her own. That was no light task, and her presence is so appreciated! Pastor Kirsten s original contract was to end on April 30th. The Council has voted to extend her contract for another 3 months, as we continue to seek a permanent pastor position through the call process. Blessings to you all, Diane Hochhalter Council President The new Our Savior's Lutheran Church parsonage is located at th St. NE.

6 This Changes Everything! Vacation Bible School June 6-8, 2018 Provided by Our Savior s Lutheran Church, Trinity Lutheran Church, and Faith Lutheran Church Vacation Bible School will be held on June 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th and we are thrilled to be welcoming back the staff from Red Willow Bible Camp! The theme this year is This Changes Everything and we will focus on how God s grace changes our lives! VBS will be split into two groups: Preschool and Day Camp. The preschool group will consist of children starting kindergarten in the fall of 2018 and The Day Camp group will consist of children in grades 1-6 as of fall Day Camp will run from 9am-3pm on the 6 th and 7 th, and from 9am-noon on the 8 th. Preschool will run from 9am-noon all three days. We will conclude with a family program involving both VBS groups on the 8 th at 11:30am in which all are invited to attend and see what the kids have learned! Lunch will be provided to the Day Camp VBS kids at noon on Wednesday and Thursday and at 11am on Friday. Lunch will be provided for the Preschool VBS kids at 11am on Friday only. VBS is FREE and you are welcome to make extra copies of these registration forms and bring a friend or share with others who may be interested! Extra copies will also be available on the mailboxes outside the church office, on the bulletin board in the Gathering Room, or you can contact Kyla Fetsch for additional copies. Registration forms will also be available through or on the OSLC website at oursaviorsvc.org. There is just one registration form for both groups this year. Please be sure to fill it out completely. Registration forms are DUE BY MAY 1 st and can be dropped off in the box marked VBS FORMS at the church office or mailed to the church at rd St NW in Valley City, ND 58072, marked Attention: Kyla Fetsch. 9 Thanks to the Our Savior s Lutheran Church Farm Fund the gift that keeps on giving Our Savior s has been able to make many generous gifts to Red Willow Ministries over the years. In December 2017, the Council designated a gift in the amount of $10,000. We ve been invited If you wish to attend the Appreciation Dinner on Tuesday, June 19 th, please let Pastor Emmy know by the end of May so that we can RSVP.

10 Did you know Our Savior s has a website? Check it out at Each week the bulletin is posted and each month the newsletter is posted. The website is a great way to stay connected when you are away. May 6 Our worship service includes Blessing of Seed, Soil, and Water. The Sunday School children will sing at the 11:00 am Worship Service. May 13 Alleluia! Christ is Risen! As the Easter season concludes, we will hear a prayer that Jesus prayed for those who will follow him. May 20 It s Pentecost Sunday. Wear RED! We celebrate how Holy Spirit is at work in our midst. Also, we ll recognize high school seniors at a 10:00 reception and 11:00 worship. May 27 Holy, holy, holy. It s Holy Trinity Sunday. We remember that we worship God, who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. There is community within God and we share in that community as we gather for worship. Reminder: During June, July, and August worship is at 8:30 and 10:00 am. AED Training Opportunity This fall, Our Savior s Lutheran Church received an AED (automated external defibrillator) as a gift through Essentia Health. An AED is a light lightweight, portable device that delivers an electric shock through the chest to the heart. The shock can potentially stop an irregular heart beat (arrhythmia) and allow a normal rhythm to resume following sudden cardiac arrest. Our AED is located next to the information counter. There will be a training session on Sunday, May 6 at 9:45 am. Come and learn how to use this device, that can potentially be life-saving. Anyone is welcome to attend. 11 Come one. Come all. Step right in. Imagine the possibilities. As a child, I loved using my imagination. For instance, my brother and I spent hours upon hours playing circus. With our imaginations, everyday objects became something more. Hula hoops became circus rings. Farm cats became fierce lions. The old tire swing became a trapeze. We took what we had, dreamed a bit, and had some fun entering into a new reality. In my annual report to the congregation, I shared the following question, based on an article I had read: Will your life together be shaped by your memories or your imaginations? As church together, we need both memories and imagination to shape us. Certainly, we need to remember our past and our traditions; however, if we only do what we did last year, we fail to grow and respond to the changing world around us. As we look to the future, the gospel frees us to use our imaginations. Using our imaginations is about taking what we have and being open to doing more with it. Our Savior s Lutheran Church is a wonderful, spirit filled community; however, we can be more than what we are now. We can love our neighbors in more ways than we do now. We can provide more meaningful opportunities for supporting one another and growing in our faith than we do now. Our building can be more than what it is now. As I begin to enter more fully into this role as your senior pastor, I want to listen deeply to you and imagine together about the present and future ministries of Our Savior s Lutheran Church. Pray and think about these questions: What do you love about Our Savior s Lutheran Church? What challenges exist in our community and world? How might we be called to respond? How does our current building serve us well? What changes might we make to the building, so that it can better be a center for mission? Look for opportunities in June, July, and August for us to join in conversation and imagine together. Maybe there will even be peanuts or cotton candy like at the circus! -Pastor Emmy P.S. On a personal note, thank you for your generosity surrounding the birth of our daughter, Sigrid. I am so grateful for the ways our staff and volunteers stepped into new roles, so that I could have time to focus on my family during maternity leave. Searle and I are also incredibly grateful for well wishes, cards, gifts, and meals you shared with us. Thank you.

12 News From Women of Our Savior s Spring Bake, Quilt and Treasure Sale April 20 and 21, 2018 were beautiful days in so many ways. They were some of the first beautiful spring-like days we have had this year, and Women of Our Savior s once again had a successful Bake, Quilt, and Treasure Sale. A huge thank you to all who helped in any way to make it a big success. God blesses us in so many ways, so that we can be a blessing to others. With the funds raised, the Women of Our Savior s organization can continue to give to many wonderful local, state and worldwide organizations and purchase needed items for our church home. Last year we gave $4,830 to organizations such as Hospice, Barnes County Food Pantry, Global Health, Back-Pack Food Program and Disaster Relief to name just a few. A complete list of the organizations who received funds are listed in the church's annual report for Our organization also purchased additional dining room chairs and another round table for the Family Gathering Room. Women of Our Savior s has two special events a year - the Spring Bake, Quilt and Treasure Sale and the Fall Bake, Quilt and Lefse Sale which we look forward to in November. Good Samaritan Quilters Tuesday is a busy day at OSLC because it s Good Samaritan Quilters Day! There is a lot of cutting, ironing, piecing, sewing and fun going on! What a faithful group this has been over the years. Ethel Gusaas has been the "leader" for many years, and she happily welcomes Carol Foth as co-leader. Other members of this industrious group are Inez Eggert, Lila Bemis, Marcia Jefferson, Delores Ust, Edie Klein, Almira Klein, Rhonda Knodle, Karen Christianson and recent newcomers Marcella Jenson and Kathy Anderson. More volunteers are always welcome. You need not be an experienced quilter as there is a job for everyone. Your hands would be put to good use. The Quilters always need fabric and sheets for quilts and backing. Last year, 288 quilts were distributed to places like APOC, WIC, BC Social services and the graduates and babies baptized at Our Savior s. The majority are shipped to disaster relief areas and countries throughout the world through Lutheran World Relief. To these Quilters we say, " Well done, good and faithful servants"! A huge thank you to Ethel Gusaas who served for many, many years as the treasurer of WELCA. A doubly huge thank you to LouVay White who has agreed to be the new treasurer. LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF KITS May 7-11 is the Spring shipping for Lutheran World Relief. Twice a year, our LWR kits and quilts are taken to Fargo where they are loaded in a semi (last fall one truck wasn't enough to hold all the boxes that were brought in from our region.) How wonderful it is for Our Savior s Lutheran to be a part of this incredible ministry of the ELCA who distribute these items to those in need around the world. Last year, our church assembled 468 health, school, baby care, and sewing kits for Lutheran World Relief. Spring and summer are good times to remind people of Baby Care kits, in particular, as many of these items can be found at garage sales. You young mothers, as your baby grows out of baby clothes, please consider giving to LWR. A Baby Care Kit consists of: 2 lightweight cotton t-shirts (onesies cut off); 2 long or short sleeved gowns or sleepers (without feet); 2 receiving blankets; 1 jacket, sweater, or sweatshirt; 2 diaper pins; one hand towel, dark color recommended; four cloth diapers, (we use good used flannel sheets to cut into diapers); and 2 bath size ( 4-5 oz) bars of gentle soap. WHO S GOT STAMPS!! How often do you toss the envelope from the mail you receive into the trash? Did you know that cancelled stamps mean money to Lutheran World Relief? It is the Commemorative or High Value Stamps that are collected. Stamps need not be trimmed or removed from envelopes. If trimming envelopes, leave at least 1/4 inch around each stamp. There is a box on the Information Center counter that can be used to collect stamps. The stamps are sold to companies that re-sell them to stamp collectors.
