10 A message from Interim Pastor Kirsten Frantsvog Sisters and Brothers in Christ, As your new interim pastor, I d like to take a moment to introduce myself. I m pastor Kirsten Frantsvog from Moorhead, MN. I grew up in Moorhead and graduated from Moorhead High School and Concordia college. I grew up on the Concordia campus as my dad was a physics professor there. My mother was a homemaker and loved to read and do handwork (especially Hardanger embroidery and counted cross-stitch). She taught me the love of doing crafts of all types! Both of my parents are deceased; my dad from Alzheimer s disease, my mother from cancer. I have two older brothers, Jonathon and Christoffer, who claim I was the spoiled child as I am the youngest. I also have a niece, Julia, who is the light of our lives! After college, I went to Wartburg Seminary. Since my ordination in 1991, I served 13 years as parish pastor, 9 years as a chaplain for Hospice and 4 years as regional care consultant for the Alzheimer s Association. In 2013, I completed a M.S. in Community Counseling with the main interest of working with people with dementia and their families. I hope my interests and skills learned from years of experience with hospice and the Alzheimer s Association will be beneficial to congregation members and families. I am looking forward to meeting you and working with the staff of Our Savior s Lutheran! Oh and yes, I do like Lutefisk! In Christ, Pastor Kirsten Frantsvog Thanksgiving Baskets The 2016 Thanksgiving Basket event will be taking place on Saturday, November 19 with baskets being picked up at Faith Lutheran Church from 10:00 to 11:00 am. Our Savior s has joined with Faith Lutheran and Trinity Lutheran for this exciting event. We will be filling baskets on Friday, November 18 beginning at 7 pm at Faith Lutheran. Our Savior s members can help by filling baskets, delivering baskets, and by donating money to help defray the costs. Watch for the signup sheets for November 18 and 19. We need your help to make the basket event a blessed happening. Also watch for the special donation basket at Our Savior s during the month of November! If you know of a family that would benefit from a Thanksgiving basket, please call Julie at Faith Lutheran ( ). Thrivent members Please consider applying for additional funding from Thrivent. Kyla Fetsch at Our Savior s would be delighted to help you complete the forms.

11 State of Our Saviors Address Dear beautiful members of Our Saviors! Fall has blessed us with intense and gorgeous colors. The vibrancy of the season reminds us that change can be so incredibly beautiful. The past month has been a whirlwind. We sent Pastor Randy and Naomi off with love and laughs, we voted to put the Valley View parsonage up for sale and acquire a new parsonage, we secured an interim pastor to help us through transitions and maternity leave for the next few months and we voted on extending a Letter of Call to Pastor Emmy for the role of Senior Pastor. Whew. In the next few months we will have to work as a congregation on two items: The Ministry Site Profile and the formation of the call committee. From the Synod Website: Development of the Ministry Site Profile prior to the Calling of a New Pastor is Helpful in at least 3 ways. 1st, it provides the call committee with basic information & description of leadership strengths and needs which will guide their work. Second, the profile will assist the synod office in recommending candidates to be considered by the call committee. Third, it provides a picture of the congregation for the candidates as they consider serving the congregation. The purpose of the MSP is to enable the elected lay leaders of the congregation to review the congregation s life and mission as the Church, the body of Christ; evaluate the congregation s present strengths; identify specific areas where the congregation needs to strengthen its ministry; specify resources necessary to fulfill the mission of the congregation, including special mission tasks in the parish community; arrive at a current understanding of the mission of the congregation; identify the gifts that are most important for the next pastor to possess. So, how do we create this MSP? By asking lots of questions So stay tuned. In some kind(s) of survey forms, the members of OSLC will be asked questions to help us learn in which directions God is leading us. You will soon be asked to submit names from which the call committee will be formed. It is essential to the health of the church that the committee be formed form all demographics of our member body. Even confirmed youth need to be a part of the committee, to bring the perspective that only they can bring. In closing I leave you with this prayer. Cut it out. Hang it on your fridge. Pray it pray it pray it. Let us be lead to where God wants us to go! O God, you have called our congregation to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen Blessings! Diane J Hochhalter, Council President

12 We All Row! When I was in high school, my whole class gathered in a room one day to take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) Test. I don t remember much about the test, but I do remember the results. My test results indicated my top match for a military vocation was to be a Ship Captain. I remember finding this especially funny, not only because I was from the prairie and had spent little time on a boat, but also since my brother who has very different interests and skills than me came back with a top match of being a Ship Captain, as well. For a brief time, I was convinced that everyone who took the ASVAB test was told they d make a great Ship Captain. I am deeply honored that you have called me into the role of Senior Pastor of Our Savior s Lutheran Church. Thank you for your trust in me. As we make this transition together, I ve been reflecting about how my role as a pastor is similar to that of a Ship Captain. Though analogies always break down at some point, I share some of my commitments to you. Ship captains pay attention to the world around them and seek to lead accordingly. A ship captain doesn t just put the ship on course and let it go. She pays attention to the weather and seas and makes proper adjustments. We are called to be church in this world. As a pastor, I seek to pay attention to what is going on in our community, nation, and world. As church, we don t just merrily, merrily row along. We respond to the deep needs and the deep pains of the world around us. We change and adapt, as we seek to remain faithful doing gospel work. Ship captains don t do all the jobs on the ship, but they trust those around them to do their jobs. As a pastor, it is not my job to do everything in the church. It is also not my job to tell you as a congregation what to do. It is my role to make sure you are equipped for what you are doing, whether it be reading in worship, serving on a committee, or seeking to live your faith in your work or home. Ship captains aren t really the ones in charge. They lead by charting the course to complete the task assigned to them. As a pastor, I am not the one in charge. The Lord of Heaven and Earth, Jesus Christ is the one who sets our mission. It is my role to help our congregation listen to God s plans for us and be who Jesus wants us to be. I m grateful to continue together to share Christ s love, to grow in faith, and to live a lives of service glorifying God. Thanks for your continued partnership in the Gospel. To borrow a VCSU catch phrase - We All Row! Pastor Emmy Swedlund
