El Paso County Pioneers Association 119 Years The Pioneer Courier Notice of Luncheon Meeting - April 24, Vol. 21, No. 2 A New York governor who became the 26th U.S. president, Theodore Roosevelt is remembered for his foreign policy, corporate reforms and ecological preservation, states a reference entry we found. What a wonderful thing to have a scholar to help us learn more in such a personal way. Mr. Roosevelt was very gracious as we waited for the start of the luncheon, visiting members at each table making them feel welcome and to learn about all of us as he went along. Recording Secretary Jeannie Spring introduces President Theodore Roosevelt I do not believe there ever was any life more attractive to a vigorous young fellow than life on a cattle ranch in those days. It was a fine, healthy life, too; it taught a man self-reliance, hardihood, and the value of instant decision... I enjoyed the life to the full. Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. El Paso County pioneers Association. February 27, luncheon meeting 60 attendees even though several did not attend due to the thought of snow and ice. Jeannie Spring presided and introduced Mr. Don Moon portraying Theodore Roosevelt the 26th, president of the United States. Don is a Colorado native with roots that go back to the turn-of-the-past-century. He has been portraying Mr. Roosevelt for the last five or six years. So, step back in time with us to hear from the trust busting, rough ridding Theodore Roosevelt. To Get An Idea of This Amazing Man 7000 people had come to hear Mr. Roosevelt speak in Milwaukee. He was shot in the chest. The bullet having gone through the copy of the speech he had prepared, which was folded and in his jacket breast pocket. Prepared for three hours, he proceeded to give them only an hour

and a half. Mr. Wilson and Mr. Taft were the other candidates running for election that year. His staff finally persuaded him to go to the hospital and he had to lay there for 3 ½ weeks. We can well imagine that those weeks were near torture for the Rough Rider to be! The bullet remained in Mr. Roosevelt s chest for the rest of his life. The operation being too risky to remove it. During his time in the hospital, his opponents took the opportunity to spread the rumors that he had been drinking alcohol due to some family history concerning alcohol. Wilson won. Back a bit! Asthma plagued Mr. Roosevelt throughout his life and his life certainly shows us that he overcame any physical problem due to asthma with a great determination that filled his life with the pleasure of accomplishment. Theodore s father had equipped a room for him to use for various strength gaining activities. The mind is a great and wonderful asset when used in positive ways and requires training and constant use to keep it fit as does the body. Home schooled due to his Asthma, he gives his father much credit for the principles, integrity, ingenuity, and honesty that we know through history to be some of the great qualities of Theodore Roosevelt. His father taught him mathematics and science. His mother was an antebellum belle of the ball and she taught those social graces that were to be of wonderful help throughout the life of this learned man who never stopped learning. He studied Arts and history, mathematics, and how to apply it all taught by loving parents to this child who needed to get strong, which he did. When he wanted to improve himself physically, having tired of the restrictions that asthma had caused, he talked with his father about it, and the second story of the house was converted into a gymnasium type area. He had a rowing machine, jumped rope among other activities and when he wasn t making the kind of progress that he wanted to make they hired a boxer to come in to help him train. Positive thinking is almost impossible to resist! Theodore had gained much strength, especially in the chest area. He went to school at Harvard, where he found the studies there very easy. The task masters of his parents were stricter and better than any instructor at school. He needed more activity, so we went out for the boxing team. The instructors took one look at him, he weighed a hundred and 33 pounds, they said no but he persuaded to give him a chance. They called out their best guy weighing in at 145 pounds, Roosevelt bested him and was on the team! Next he went out for rowing and they told him the same thing. He said give me a chance. They put him on the river and by the time he left school he was a coxswain on a on an eight-man boat. Don Moon captivates EPCPA members as he is Theodore Roosevelt. April 2015 Page 2 of 12

After his father died and left him a small fortune in 1879, he bought a Ranch in the Dakota Territory with some of that money. It was to be a place of solace fo him. Alice Lee While visiting at a friend s home, he met a young woman who was his hosts sister and the catch of Boston as her brother, described her. Theodore had already decided she was the one he would marry! He went to her father and stating that he needed a mentor. He asked her father, Mr. Lee if he would be that person. Who could resist that, Mr. Lee said yes, come to me any time. Theodore had both feet in the door! She was well schooled and well provided for, he knew she could talk with kings. The young Roosevelt was smitten as we say, and continued in that mode, throughout her short life. Her sudden death just after the birth of their daughter devastated him coming as it did on the same day that his mother died. That double tragedy sent him on his way to the Dakota Territories where he made himself busy with the day to day work of ranching, learning as he worked on the ranch he d previously purchased. Mr. Roosevelt and Betsy Shoup Due to his politeness and perspicuity Roosevelt knew not only instinctively, but through positive training at home how to behave in polite company and how to get what he wanted. More about Courtship From that moment on, he started to court his dear Alice. He wheedled invitations to every holiday event. He was her constant companion! During this time, Roosevelt had finished book for which the publisher was encouraging him to get the finished manuscript to him. This was a busy young man. On Valentine s Day At dinner, he turned to Alice and asked her if she had ever entertained the thought of marrying him. Giving him the answer that she thought she did not have any choice. They were married in October of that year on his birthday. By that time he had already purchased a Brownstone house for them and was enjoying the returns on his book about the war of 1812 he began to think about writing another book and was already writing editorial columns for publication. He cared not about politics, only that they were selling their judgements for money! He wanted to make a difference. He was beginning to rabble rouse in New York City. He looked around, thinking, what could he do then realizing the only thing he could do was to get involved with politics. In order to run for office. You had to join a political party, which party would that be? He decided on the Republican Party because the Democrats controlled the streets and they intimidated with violence, at least the Republicans intimidated with money and bribery! He was told the only way he could break into a political party was with a crowbar. You could not join the Republican Party or any party just by checking off a box on a sheet of paper you needed to be interviewed. The famous April 2015 Page 3 of 12

blackball was a method used to determine membership by this group of men, and if you got one blackball thrown into the pot you were out for life. The only thing that could get you thrown out of a political party at that time was if you were accused of and convicted of murder, if you got sent to jail, you were stripped of your membership in either political party for life. election and won by the largest majority of anyone in the history of the state. Still writing articles at this time he had to be more circumspect in what he wrote. The Republican leaders met again in the small smoke-filled room, where he d been interviewed trying to decide what to do with him, because of the articles he was writing someone spoke up and said let s send him to Albany, then he will be out of our hair, so they came to him and said, would you like to have a one-year post in Albany. He said of course. Telling him that he would win by 13 points. He said you can do that? and they said, absolutely. We control the ballot box. So he was off to Albany. He sat back and watched and learned how things were done. He made friends with the power brokers. When the session was over, he came back, the Republicans were very happy with him, because he had done nothing! Local political types asked him to run again and he said absolutely! This time they were willing to let them win by 27 points, Theodore said let s go, and again he won. The New York State legislature made it against the law for judges to sell their decisions, think of it, it s hard for us to imagine in a way. At the end of that year the party bosses asked if he d said would you like to run again, and he said absolutely. The party bosses said he could run but without their backing they were not happy with him. He said that s fine, I have my own backing, I can run my own campaign. He went on to By this time he and Alice were to have a child and she was having a difficult pregnancy. She was a very tiny person, after all. His mother came down with typhoid. She had been doing work in the Bowery. This was in 1884 both women were at home and ill and Theodore was preparing to go to Albany after assurances from the doctors that both women would be fine. Remember they were not really left alone in the home. There were servants and relatives close. On February 12 daughter Alice was born. Then great sadness, on February 14, his mother and Alice, his wife, died on the same day. The bright lights in his life had gone out and he didn t know what he was going to do. He resigned his position in Albany and other work he had been doing, he took long horseback rides for the solitude of sorrow had overtaken him. He had purchased a ranch a few years earlier, called the Elkhorn in the Dakotas. And so he went out to the Dakotas instinctively knowing that life there would heal him. And so he became a cowboy riding the range. He showed up for work in finest cowboy regalia fringe April 2015 Page 4 of 12

beading, gauntlets, the works! His hat was one that resembled that of a river boat gambler. The Cowboys took one look at him and fell on the ground laughing! Every night around the campground they would goad me, they called me four eyes, and every name you can imagine, and I took their verbal abuse. Mind you he was the owner! He began to understand that he would have to change his life because he had let sorrow overtake it. For two years I lived life and slept on the ground, yet still these men did not respect me, he says, because I did not respect myself. He would go back to New York to take care of business and he would return knowing what he still would have to withstand. In the spring of 1886 Cowboys decided to go in to town to a saloon and they invited me along which was a rarity, I went. I was not drinking alcohol, coffee was the only stimulant that I chose, I didn t take my sense of humor. We when we got into the saloon. There were a couple of soiled doves, ladies of the evening, we were on one side of the bar, another group of men on the other. Now I cared not with these ladies did for their living, they were women, and they were worthy of respect. My father and mother had taught me that women were to be treated with respect, I saw that they were being verbally abused by the men across the room. I would not tolerate taking the Lord s name in vain, or the use of curse words. There was this one big cowboy, 6 foot four I expect, just turning the air blue with epithets And I had had enough of that. And I walked up to him and said shut up. He swung at me, and as he did. I knocked him over and pummeled him and sat on top of them until my friends had to pull me off and take me outside to cool down. His friends took him off for medical care. Later that night as I thought about the situation, I realized that my anger about my wife s death, my mother s, everything that had gone wrong surfaced and I was able to put things straight in my mind. I found from an old newspaper that had been sent to me that friends had put me up to run for office and I decided to go back east and do just that. I went back ran for office lost miserably that was a great training ground too. Now back east. I rekindled a friendship with Edith Carol and married her in 1886, and we started on a grand tour of Europe. Back in New York City, I began to reform the situations that I found that needed it. As Police Commissioner of New York City (Betsy asks, do any of you readers watch Blue Bloods?) I made police officers learn to use their six shooters and become proficient. I made them study the laws. Men came from Scotland Yard and from the Sutreté in Paris to study our methods. Later on I was awarded the Victoria Cross and Legion of honor. McKinley was going to run for president. And though I didn t like his backers. I agreed to work for him. Because of that help, when he was elected, I became Under Secretary of the Navy. It was a job I loved having sailed, and rowed on Oyster Bay. I loved my the Navy. My first book was on the wars of My uncle Jimmy, who was an admiral in the Confederacy helped me with it. Rough Riders - War with Spain in Cuba April 2015 Page 5 of 12

Dandies from the East were among the many men eager to go to fight in Cuba due to the war in Spain. We spent four days on ship waiting to leave the harbor which didn t keep the men from seasickness and many of them rode the rail. In a fiasco of non communication Navy horses had been left behind. At San Juan Heights because of the indecisive leadership of others he took charge saying you will take my orders or you will die here! They took the Hill and had 40% casualties. It was a foolhardy charge that won the War the McKinley people said you will be Mr. Roosevelt & Marie Sloan nominated as photo by Carolyn Cummings VP, no, no! Roosevelt didn t want VP however at the convention it happened anyway and history continued on its way. He went by rail 1500 miles to campaign. From here in Colorado Springs he rode the Short Line round the Peak and described it as The view that Bankrupts the English Language! When President McKinley was shot, I became what Mark Hanna and Tom Pratt feared the most, president of the United States. Some Thoughts: I Learned about this country from the west! You Ride for the Brand! You work for the People not the Party! The biggest detriment to Patriotism in this country is the hyphenated American! We are one people under one flag, one language! We are not a polyglot rooming house where people come to take advantage of the situation. We invite people in to become one of US! It is to the man who s stained with blood sweat and tears who earns your respect. You and you alone are responsible for your life and if you take on that responsibility to make your life and that of those around you better you will succeed! Bringing History to Life! RUSHMORE - Carving History October 4, October 31, 1941 Mount Rushmore is a project of colossal proportion, colossal ambition and colossal achievement. It involved the efforts of nearly 400 men and women. The duties involved varied greatly from the call boy to drillers to the blacksmith to the housekeepers. Some of the workers at Mount Rushmore were interviewed, and were asked, "What is it you do here?" One of the workers responded and said, "I run a jackhammer." Another worker responded to the same question, " I earn $8.00 a day." However, a third worker said, "I am helping to create a memorial." The third worker had an idea of what they were trying to accomplish. The workers had to endure conditions that varied from blazing hot to bitter cold and windy. Each day they climbed 700 stairs to the top of the mountain to punch-in on the time clock. Then 3/8 front inch thick steel cables lowered them over the mountain to punch-in on the time clock. Then 3/8 inch steel cables lowered them over the April 2015 Page 6 of 12

front of the 500 foot face of the mountain in a bosun chair. Some of the workers admitted being uneasy with heights, but during the Depression, any job was a good job. The work was exciting, but dangerous. 90% of the mountain was carved using dynamite. The powdermen would cut and set charges of dynamite of specific sizes to remove precise amounts of rock. Before the dynamite charges could be set off, the workers would have to be cleared from the mountain. Workers in the winch house on top of the mountain would hand crank the winches to raise and lower the drillers. If they went too fast, the drillers in their bosun chairs would be dragged up on their faces. To keep this from happening, young men and boys were hired as call boys. Call boys sat at the edge of the mountain and shout messages back and forth assuring safety. During the 14 years of construction not one fatality occurred. Dynamite was used until only three to six inches of rock was left to remove to get to the final carving surface. At this point, the drillers and assistant carvers would drill holes into the granite very close together. This was called honeycombing. The closely drilled holes would weaken the granite so it could be removed often by hand. Visitors to the site were very interested in the honeycombed granite and would often ask, "How can I get a piece of rock like that?" The hoist operator would usually respond, "Oh, I can't give that away. I'm holding onto it for a buddy of mine that works up on the mountain." The visitor would respond, "I'll pay, I'll give you $2.00 for it." The hoist operator's reply was, "Nope, nope, I'd really catch it if I gave away my buddies piece of granite." If the visitors were very determined to get a piece of that granite, they would make another offer. "I'll give you $6.00 for that piece of honeycomb granite." The hoist operator would pretend to pause and think about it... then he would say, "Alright for $6.00 I'm willing to take the heat." The hoist operator would give the visitors the piece of honeycombed granite and take their $6.00. The visitor would leave very pleased with their rare and hard won souvenir. The hoist operator would wait until he was sure the visitors were gone and he would get on the phone to the top of the mountain and say, "Boys send down another one!" Another piece of honeycombed granite was sent down, ready for the next visitor looking for a special souvenir from Mount Rushmore. After the honeycombing, the workers smoothed the surface of the faces with a hand facer or April 2015 Page 7 of 12

bumper tool. In this final step, the bumper tool would even up the granite, creating a surface as smooth as a sidewalk. From 1927 to 1941 the 400 workers at Mount Rushmore were doing more than operating a jackhammer, they were doing more than earning $8.00 a day, they were building a Memorial that people from across the nation and around the world would come to see for generations. Over 90% of Mount Rushmore was carved using dynamite. Dynamite blasts removed approximately 450,000 tons of rock from the mountain. Always ready to help a constituent Mr. Roosevelt speaks with EPCPA board member Paula LeBaron. * * * The Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a sculpture carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore (Lakota Sioux name: Six Grandfathers) near Keystone, South Dakota, in the United States. Sculpted by Danish-American Gutzon Borglum and his son, Lincoln Borglum, Mount Rushmore features 60-foot (18 m) sculptures of the heads of four United States presidents: George Washington ( ), Thomas Jefferson ( ), Theodore Roosevelt ( ), and Abraham Lincoln ( ).The entire memorial covers 1, acres (5.17 km2) and is 5,725 feet (1,745 m) above sea level. South Dakota historian Doane Robinson is credited with conceiving the idea of carving the likenesses of famous people into the Black Hills region of South Dakota in order to promote tourism in the region. Robinson's initial idea was to sculpt the Needles; however, Gutzon Borglum rejected the Needles site because of the poor quality of the granite and strong opposition from Native American groups. They settled on the Mount Rushmore location, which also has the advantage of facing southeast for maximum sun exposure. Robinson wanted it to feature western heroes like Lewis and Clark, Red Cloud, and Buffalo Bill Cody, but Borglum decided the sculpture should have a more national focus and chose the four presidents whose likenesses would be carved into the mountain. After securing federal funding through the enthusiastic sponsorship of "Mount Rushmore's great political patron", U.S. Senator Peter Norbeck, construction on the memorial began in 1927, and the presidents' faces were completed between 1934 and Upon Gutzon Borglum's death in March 1941, his son Lincoln Borglum took over construction. Although the initial concept called for each president to be depicted from head to waist, lack of funding forced construction to end in late October Mount Rushmore has become an iconic symbol of presidential greatness and has appeared in works of fiction, and has been discussed or depicted in other popular works. It attracts over two million people annually. *** April 2015 Page 8 of 12

When completed, Crazy Horse Memorial will stand 563 feet tall by 641 feet long. The project was started in 1948 at the request of Chief Henry Standing Bear who invited sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski to carve a mountain to honor the heritage, tradition and culture of North American Indians. Its namesake, Crazy Horse, was a war leader of the Oglala Lakota Tribe and a prominent leader in the Sioux resistance to white encroachment on the Black Hills. His bravery and skill are greatly admired, and he is revered by the Sioux as one of their greatest leaders.
