W, CEDAR CITY, Utah - March 17 - Southern Utah will wrap up its 2010 regular season this weekend when the Thunderbirds host Cal State Fullerton and Brigham Young on Friday and Monday. The meet against BYU will mark the fi nal home meet for SUU seniors Melissa Johnson, Lindsey Schultz, Elise Wheeler and Bailey Baker. These seniors have been the most successful group in our program s history, head coach Scott Bauman said. Each of them have provided a great deal of leadership this year. We expect the team to help them go out with a bang. Hosted by CS-Fullerton Titan Gym 6:00 p.m. Apr. 10 NCAA Regionals TBA Southern Utah will enter the meets ranked No. 21 in the nation and assured of a spot in at an NCAA Regional meet. Wheeler and Johnson have led the charge for the T-Birds this season as the duo is ranked fi rst in the all-around and third on vault, respectively, in the North Central region. Both have also collected a combined 30 individual titles this season and 11 weekly conference awards. The Thunderbirds will enter the meets having scored a season-high at the University of Utah last weekend. The fi nal score included season-highs of on vault, on bars and on fl oor. Southern Utah will be looking to avenge a loss to the Titans from the 2009 season as the T-Birds lost at CSF in the season opener. On senior night, SUU will looked to run in consecutive winning streak against the BYU Cougars to fi ve in as many meets. Both contests are scheduled to start at LAST TIME AGAINST FULLERTON FULLERTON, Calif. - Jan. 16, Southern Utah s Elise wheeler proved to be one of the bright spots for the Thunderbird gymnastics team as the junior captured the all-around in SUU s season opener. Despite some strong individual performances, Southern Utah opened the season with a loss at Cal State Fullerton on Friday night. LAST TIME AGAINST BYU PROVO, Utah - Jan Southern Utah gymnastics surrendered the lead following the third rotation on Thursday night, but a strong showing on the road during the fi nal rotation on beam swung the lead back to the Thunderbirds favor as SUU captured a to season-opening victory at Brigham Young University. 2 HEAD COACH SCOTT BAUMAN 19TH SEASON UTAH STATE, 1990 Scott Bauman enters his 19th season as head coach of Southern Utah University gymnastics this year. In his 18 previous years, Bauman has overseen the ascent of the squad from a relatively unknown entity to one which has established a reputation as one of the nation s established and respected programs. That development has made signifi cant strides lately as after years of knocking at the door Bauman has led the Thunderbird team to NCAA post-season appearances with the latest coming in Had the newest rules been in play with the top 36 teams qualifying, Southern Utah would have qualifi ed for the NCAA post season in 15 of Bauman s 18 years at the helm of the program. Bauman s work with the SUU squad has been a constant process. During his fi rst year at SUU, his gymnasts set school records for practically every individual and team score. That 1992 season set a precedent for those which would follow, as the Thunderbird gymnasts have virtually rewritten the record books in each subsequent year. The only exception was in 1994, when Bauman saw the departure of seven seniors that were at Southern Utah when he joined the program. Under Bauman s guidance the team has jumped its all-around average from in 1991 (the year before he came) to a school-record in The team s assault on the record books has been relentless. A quick glance at the SUU book shows that every individual record has been equalled or set within the last fi ve seasons and every team mark has been established in the last seven. Correspondingly, school RQS marks have been shattered in the Bauman years, going from a in 1991 to an SUU record in Although 2000 was the fi rst time the entire team qualifi ed for the post-season, at least three SUU gymnasts have qualifi ed for at-large berths in all but one of Bauman s seasons at Southern Utah, including four in 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2007 while fi ve qualifi ed in The team qualifi ed for the NCAA regionals in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005 and In 1998 the Thunderbirds used just two all-arounders; both advanced for the regional meet. For his success, he was honored by his peers as the Midwest Region s Coach of the Year following the 1993 season and again in 2003 in the North Central Region. A 1990 graduate of Utah State University, Bauman is in his fi rst headcoaching capacity. He cut his coaching teeth under the tutelage of Ray Corn at USU where he helped develop the Aggies into a national power. Bauman spent seven years as both an undergraduate and graduate assistant at USU. Bauman was initially involved in aerial ski jumping for nine years, creating an interest in gymnastics. He originally became involved with the sport while in high school in his hometown of Price, Utah, where he served as a part-time coach at Price Gymnastics. After enrolling at Utah State, Bauman went to work with the USU program, helped out at Logan s Ten-O Gymnastics, and eventually moved on to take the head job at SUU. Bauman has also worked at the Lake Owen Gymnastics Camp the past 13 summers and is the founder and administrator of the Southern Utah Gymnastics Academy. Bauman is married to the former Stephanie Green. They have two daughters, Shay (13) and Shaun (10).
