In the News A few recent Media Highlights (July 2012): Former Aggie Great Headed to Olympics Herald Journal, July 7 It took 16 years longer than he was hoping, but former Utah State track and field great Craig Carter has made it to the Summer Olympics. But instead of competing in his sport s most prestigious competition, Carter will serve as a personal coach to a pair of athletes. Carter will be coaching female athletes Jillian Camarena-Williams and Julie Labonte at the London 2012 Olympics Games. Before heading to Arizona, Carter spent two stints as an assistant coach at USU. Carter mentored legendary USU competitor James Parker, a 2004 Olympian who was a nine-time All-American. Parker was the U.S. champion the year he went to the Olympics. The thing I ve always loved about Craig is his ability to get the best out of the athletes that he coaches, said longtime USU head coach Gregg Gensel, who replaced legendary coach Ralph Maughan when Carter was a USU competitor. He s passionate about the sport, he cares about the athletes and he wants what s best for them. As a student-athlete at USU from , Carter was a two-time Big West Conference champion in the hammer and discus. The 44-year-old was a two-time All-American and the 1990 Big West Field Athlete of the Year. American Water Receives Water Research Foundation Grant for Backflow Monitoring Project Yahoo! Finance, July 10 American Water, the largest publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company, announced today that it received a grant from the Water Research Foundation to conduct a joint research project with Utah State University to measure the frequency of backflow through residential water meters. The project is titled, Case Studies to Identify Occurrence, Accuracy
and Causative Factors of Reverse Flow as Measured by Meters. The total value of the project is $648,480, with $265,200 funded by the Water Research Foundation and $383,280 in-kind contribution from the research partners and participating utilities. American Water will directly receive $202,000 to pay for research costs. We are pleased that the Water Research Foundation has provided the opportunity to examine this important research topic, said Dr. Orren Schneider, Senior Environmental Engineer for American Water s Innovation and Environmental Stewardship department. By examining and quantifying the rate of residential backflow occurrence we will be better able to determine if there are any associated public health risks. This project will also enable us to develop methods to monitor and fix the causes of these backflow events. Aggie Men's Basketball Schedule for Announced Herald Journal, July 12 Aggie men s basketball fans will get a chance to see their team a lot in the early going of the season. The first six games, which includes a pair of exhibition contests, will take place in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum, where the Aggies have won 100 of their last 107 games and are under head coach Stew Morrill. Utah State made the upcoming schedule public Thursday. The first thing that is a big change from last year is only 12 non-league games compared to 17 in the season, Morrill said. Obviously that is due to a larger WAC schedule with 18 league games versus 14 last season. USU will play a total of 30 regular season games, with 18 of those in the Spectrum. Six games are against teams that made the postseason in After exhibition games against Grand Canyon and Simon Fraser, the Aggies begin the regular season on Nov. 10 by hosting Idaho State. Saint Mary s, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Weber State complete the first homestand. Saint Mary s is the defending West Coast Conference champions. USU will host the World Vision Challenge, sponsored by Gossner Foods, on Dec UC Davis, Southern Illinois and Nicholls State come to Logan for the three-day event.
Ex-USU Official Arrested in Theft, Scholarship Misappropriation Case Herald Journal, July 13 Felony charges were filed Friday against Utah State University s former executive director of enrollment services, who is accused of stealing money and improperly awarding scholarships to family members. Jennifer Putnam Twiss of North Logan, 34, was booked into the Cache County Jail on Friday on suspicion of theft, forgery and unlawful dealing of property by a fiduciary. In March, Twiss was fired from USU after an internal audit revealed irregularities in the disbursement of scholarship funds, school officials said then. Deputy County Attorney Tony Baird said Twiss has been highly cooperative with the investigation. In the course of investigation, police say Twiss admitted to both helping her family by securing scholarships for them, while also using their accounts to funnel money into her own personal accounts to pay off debts. According to a probable cause statement prepared by USU police officers, an internal audit of the university s Institutional Discretionary Funds revealed irregularities in the disbursement of scholarship funds. USU Partners with BYU-Idaho for MBA Program San Juan Record, June 13 Beginning in 2013, Utah State University will offer Master of Business Administration degrees through courses taught on the Brigham Young University-Idaho campus, the two institutions announced Friday. Huntsman School. The courses will be taught in Rexburg on Fridays and Saturdays by faculty members from USU's Jon M. Huntsman School of Business and will be based on the same curriculum taught in Logan, officials said. Tuition for the two-year, 36-credit program is approximately $25,000 and admissions decisions will be made by USU under the same standards as all students in the BYU-Idaho is pleased to collaborate with Utah State in a way that provides some exciting opportunities, Fenton L. Broadhead, academic vice president at BYU-Idaho, said in a prepared
statement. This new agreement allows for a graduate school experience here in Rexburg for students, employees and the local community. Ed Sexton, associate academic vice president over curriculum for BYU-Idaho, said the arrangement was made with USU as opposed to sister school Brigham Young University in Provo because residents of Rexburg and the surrounding area frequently attend Utah State as a way to take part in a master's program without having to relocate from their homes or jobs. He also said USU initially approached BYU-Idaho about the arrangement. USU Fraternity Donates $125,000 for Scholarships and Leadership Fox 13 Now, July 14 The Utah State University chapter of the Chi Omega Fraternity donated $125,000 to USU s Student Services in June. The Alpha Gamma chapter of the Chi Omega House Corporation board donated $100,000 to the USU Chi Omega Legacy Scholarship. Another $25,000 anonymous donation will go toward the Greek Leadership Endowment. The Chi Omega Legacy Scholarship was established by Chi Omegas from the Alpha Gamma Chapter at Utah State University and other friends of Chi Omega. Its purpose is to create a lasting legacy of the Alpha Gamma Chapter at USU and to provide scholarships for the descendants of members of that chapter. More than 54 alumnae and friends have donated to the scholarship. The Chi Omega Legacy scholarship donation will fund a full-year tuition for a student here at USU, said Patty Halaufia, Chi Omega House Corporation board member. This is the first year we have been able to present a scholarship to a Chi Omega legacy from our endowment. 'The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People' Author Dies CNBC, July 16 Stephen R. Covey, author of the bestselling motivational book "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People," died on Monday at an Idaho hospital from injuries he suffered in a bicycle accident in April, family members said in a statement. He was 79.
Covey, a former professor at Brigham Young University in Utah, founded an executive training center in Salt Lake City that merged in 1997 with Franklin Quest Co to form FranklinCovey, a leading provider of time-management seminars and publications. The publicly traded company is perhaps best known for its line of Franklin Planner appointment calendars, which it markets along with books, workshops and other products based on its "Franklin System" of business management and Covey's "7 Habits" principles. Covey, a Salt Lake City native, earned a master's degree in business administration from Harvard University and a doctorate from Brigham Young. But it was his self-help guide to success in business, "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change," published in 1989, that made Covey a brand name. Egypt s President, Mohamed Morsi, Chooses Little-Known Hesham Kandil as Prime Minister Washington Post, July 24 Egypt s president appointed a new prime minister on Tuesday, asking Hesham Kandil a U.S.-educated technocrat currently serving as water and irrigation minister to form a new government. It took President Mohamed Morsi more than three weeks to make the appointment, and the elevation of Kandil came as a complete surprise. Kandil, who was born in 1962, will be the first Egyptian prime minister to wear a beard, a clear sign of change in a country where such an outward display of Islamic piety was once outlawed. Morsi, who took office three weeks ago, is Egypt s first bearded president. Morsi had promised to appoint someone from outside the Muslim Brotherhood from which he resigned after the election to form a unity government but the fact that Kandil is bearded was viewed as a sign of his social and political leanings. In an interview with al-jazeera last year,
Kandil denied being affiliated with any Islamist group but said he had grown his beard out of a sense of religious duty. Kandil earned a master s degree from Utah State University in 1988 and a doctorate in irrigation from North Carolina State University in He has served as a senior bureaucrat in the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources and as chief water resources engineer at the African Development Bank. USU Football Team Picked 2nd in WAC Herald Journal, July 27 Utah State s football team is moving up in the ranks. After being picked to finish fifth in the Western Athletic Conference in 2011 and fourth in 2010, the Aggies found themselves entering uncharted territory: They are one of the favorites. USU was tabbed to finish second by the media and coaches in this year s WAC preseason polls, which were announced Thursday morning during the league s Football Preview held at the Orleans Arena. It is a credit to these kids. They ve worked their tails off, USU head coach Gary Andersen said. It matters because it comes from the peers, especially the coaches poll. It should catapult them through the season and it shows some respect.... It does not put a ring on your finger, it doesn t give you a championship, it doesn t get you to a bowl game or bowl game championship. But what it does do is shows that people respect you, and that s important.
