1 United Methodist Women of Indiana June 2013 From Our President It was so good to see everyone at the Annual Spring meeting. Thanks to the Windfall UM Women for hosting the meeting. We have so many opportunities to be in mission and join together to learn about mission. Be sure to plan to attend Mission u in July (brochure, pg 7). I wanted to share with you the following information from Carolyn Maxey, our Conference President - Hope & Hospitality, Tools for Leaders concerning Immigration: Hope & Hospitality, Tools for Leaders. Just as the national debate on immigration heats up, and the Senate Judiciary Committee debates a proposal for immigration reform, United Methodist Women has a new resource on lmc policy, and many articles and resources on controversial issues, resource list, action ideas, as well as articles linking immigration to other UMW Social Action priorities. You can download a page or the full book at: Always contact your district officers if you need assistance with programs or other resources. That is my home church and my ladies and I enjoyed having you visit. The evaluation forms indicated that the meeting was time well spent. Your comments and recommendations were shared with the district team. We do listen and try to respond to your comments. Thank you to all who took time to fill those out. You do not have to wait for the meetings to share your comments and opinions on the meetings. We on the team have an open ear policy. We are elected by you and wish to keep the meetings helpful and informative. Our next big get together as a district will be Saturday, September 28, 2013 where we will be gathering at Terhune United Methodist Church for our Annual meeting. At this meeting we will be installing officers for 2014, reviewing by-law changes, presenting the budget for 2014, celebrating births of potential UMW members since last fall, remembering those we have lost since then and recognizing officers who will be leaving the board. There will also be a speaker. Plan now to attend and bring a friend. It is going to be an active meeting. If you vice-presidents ever have to fill in for your president at a meeting I hope she gives you all that you need to conduct a successful meeting like my president did recently. Thank You Connie. 2 North Central Connection 2 June 2013 District Secretaries I would like to start off by saying thank you to those who attended the Secretary & Communication Coordinator leadership training session following the Spring Annual Meeting in Windfall on April 13. In the session I shared the do s and don ts and why s for recording minutes of UMW business meetings and how to reach out to members or prospective members using Facebook and other forms of social media. I also shared and showed how to access and follow the Indiana UMW Facebook page and to get alerts of what activities are going on and how to get more information or contact appropriate UMW leaders in the district as well as Conference level. Find out what works best for your members and units. Personal phone calls, newsletters and social media are all effective methods to reach out to your audiences. As we continue to engage new members and the younger generations yet continue to service and support our current members, a simple first step to successful engagement is to find out how they want to get information and how they would like to participate. If you have questions I can be reached at etice2003@gmail.com or Yours in Christ, Emily Otto-Tice Facebook Secretary, UMW North Central District UMW of Indiana Conference Treasurers Thanks to everyone for your patience with the change in District Treasurer. I believe that all your checks have been cashed and monies forwarded to the Conference. If you have a check that has not been cashed please contact me and we try to straighten out any problems. In April we conducted our Leadership Training for all Unit Treasurers. I wish more unit treasurers could have attended, but I was happy to see all the women who graciously gave up their Saturday afternoon to attend. It was nice to put faces with names. This meeting gives you good direction in how to complete forms and most importantly a check to bounce ideas off of other units treasurers. We collected $ during the Spring Meeting, which was applied to Pledge to Missions. So far the units have forward $3, to be applied to mission giving. Keep those dollars coming our way! We hope to surpass our goal for 2013 of $45,000. NOTE: Remittance Forms are due by the 20th of each month. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CHECKS ARE PAYABLE TO NORTH CENTRAL DISTRICT UMW. If I have your address I will you a note that your check has been received. Otherwise your cancelled check will serve as a receipt. Thanks for all you do! God Bless! 3 North Central Connection 3 June 2013 Spiritual Growth Spiritual Growth can start small, such as reading Response or New World Outlook magazines. Most units subscribe to at least one and place it in the church library. You can also begin reading books of the reading program. Each have been specifically selected to warm your heart and show ways to love others as Christ has loved us. Begin with daily devotions, there are free listings online or for a nominal cost you can order them. Just staying close to God and sharing with others what touches your heart is a simple way to grow your faith and the faith of others. Be enthusiastic. United Methodist Women do so much good locally and around the world. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Linda Davies, Spiritual Growth Coordinator lkdavies1@gmail.com Showing Hospitality We are still in need of greeters for The Indiana Annual Conference to be held in Indianapolis, June 6-8, This is an excellent opportunity to meet people around the conference and connect with friends. Will you be able to help or do you know others who will be attending Conference that would like to show Radical Hospitality? If you live close and can drive in for a morning, afternoon or evening we would greatly appreciate your help. The following times are when we need persons greeting at the doors. Thursday 8:30am-10:30am 10:30am-12:00pm 12:00pm-1:30pm 7:00pm-8:00pm Saturday 7:30am-8:30am 9:00am-10:30am Friday 7:30am-9:00am 1:00pm-2:00m 7:00pm-8:00pm I would love to be able to put you in one of these spots. Please contact me or if you have questions call me at Thanks so much for your prayerful consideration. Jeanie Park Annual Conference Hospitality Committee jpark@embarqmail.com WANTED: MANY WOMEN!!! It is that time of year again! The Committee on Nominations is seeking names of interested ladies, YOUNG and not so young, to participate in the North Central District Executive Committee and Committee on Nominations. This is a great way to get to know other UM ladies from our area and learn more about the impact our organization has beyond your local community. Several positions will be open for two year terms as well as the completion of one year on the Mission Coordinator for Education and Interpretation. Additionally, there are five positions open on the Committee on Nominations. Geographic, age and ethnic diversity are always sought in UMW leadership. Specifically we are in need of women from the Kokomo/Marion areas. It is desired not to have more than one person on the Executive Team from the same local unit and to maintain tenure limits of four years per office and eight on the team, not including Committee on Nominations. Under the new guidelines beginning in 2013 we do have flexibility in all of these criteria if an effort has been made to maintain the prior standards. So, no more use of the phrase, "sorry, I have used my 8 years at the district level!" For more information on positions open, or to suggest someone or offer your help, contact Beth McDaniel at basmcdaniel@gmail.com or Beth Stickles McDaniel Nominations Chair, North Central District Ministry with the Roma The Roma, erroneously knows as Gypsies, left the northern part of India 1000 years ago in search of a better life. What they found was a cruel and unforgiving world. They have been stigmatized with labels such as thieves, swindlers and witches, barred from owning land and routinely denied education, healthcare and jobs. A thousand years of history have taught them that those of us on the outside are untrustworthy and seek to do them harm. So how do we reconcile? Come to Mission u this summer to learn more about ministry with these people. To prepare for this study, be sure to read the May/June 2013 issue of New World Outlook. The entire magazine is devoted to helping us understand the Roma of Europe. Lori Smith, Social Action lsmith@ivytech.edu

4 North Central Connection 4 June 2013 Program Resources Congratulations to all UMW members who have successfully completed a reading plan in A list of those given awards at our spring meeting appears at the end of my article. HOWEVER, I know there are more of you out there. Shortly before I began to prepare the awards my home computer had a melt-down and I lost the information sent to me between January and April. If you do not see your members represented on this list below, please send your list to me again, and I will get you their awards as soon as possible, include them in the list to the Conference, and list them in our next district newsletter. I hope you all have been keeping up with your reading plan for There are lots of very good books out there. The reading lists are available on line, just Google UMW Reading Program on your search engine and many books are available through your public library. I am currently reading Touch: Pressing Against the Wounds of a Broken World by Pastor Rudy Rasmus. This book is the story of his ministry at the St. John s UMC in downtown Houston, Texas. Nearly closed, Pastor Rudy s church has become one of the largest and most culturally diverse congregations in the country. The Church s motto We love you, and there is nothing you can do about it, accompanied by sincere hugs from many in the congregation has demonstrated Christ s love to many in the Houston area. It is a very interesting read, including how Pastor Rudy became a local pastor at St. John s. This is just one of the many books on our reading list this year. Take advantage of your vacation this summer and catch up on your reading. President Connie Pearson has assigned each of us to keep in communication with several churches in the district. We look forward to getting in touch with each of you and making ourselves available for visits, questions, or to serve as a sounding board. You should be hearing from your district officer in the near future. If this does not happen soon enough to meet your needs, please contact any district officer to find the name of your designee. Working together, we can live out our United Methodist Women s Purpose more fully. I am excited to hear how your circles and groups are responding to the challenge given to us by Jennifer Meadows, Conference Young Woman s Coordinator, to find a cause and commit your energy and heart to that cause to make a difference for God s people. And Matthew reminds us of whom these people are And the king will answer them, 'I tell you the truth, just as you did it for one of the least of these brothers or sisters of mine, you did it for me. Matthew 25:40 Your sister in Christ, Nancy Boone nboone17@yahoo.com Mission u Scholarships We are sorry to report that no one from North Central District applied for scholarships for Mission u this year. Our scholarships will be transferred to other districts to be used. If you have questions, you can contact Jenn Meadows directly at meadowsj@uindy.edu. Connie Pearson th St, Sheridan, IN connie_pearson42@yahoo.com Fire at Lucille Raines Residence On May 6, the Lucille Raines Residence had a fire. One room was completely gutted as well as some damage to the surrounding area. The insurance deductible is $5,000, so any gifts toward repair expense would be most helpful. The good news is no one was injured. For that we are most grateful. Carolyn Marshall cmarshall2sprintmail.com A Young Woman s Voice (Jenn Meadows was to speak at our Spring District meeting. She wanted to share these thoughts.) UMW Dear United Methodist Women, I m so sorry that I was unable to join you today. I received an awesome job offer but of course, the job training had to be today and I couldn t move it around. Alas, I hear this is what life is like from here on out, so I m taking this as life experience. Before I get into my position, let me first introduce myself. My name is Jenn Meadows and I m a junior communication/public relations major at the University of Indianapolis. Besides taking a full 18-hour course load, I m secretary of the United Methodist Student Association, president of UIndy Lilly Scholars, Account Executive for the studentrun PR firm Top Dog Communication, air personality for 88.7 WICR and UIndy Radio, Young Women s Coordinator for the Indiana Conference of United Methodist Women, and an Orientation Leader for incoming freshman (the job that is preventing me from being with you today.) I tell you all of this because when it comes to your college students, we re busy, but we re driven. When we believe in something strongly, we throw our hearts into it. However, we need something to believe in. Usually, that is a cause. Instead of trying to bring young women into the UMW for the social aspect, pick up a cause like human trafficking and develop a project or campaign that the women could throw ourselves behind. Not all, but some young women see the UMW as a social club for the older ladies in their churches. The first way to change that perspective is to get them involved with something they believe in. We may not have money, but we sure do have energy and passion that runs deep. We want to change the world. With UMW, we can. I am planning a young women s retreat on UIndy s campus August 2-3 for young women to get together and learn about how they can make a change in the world with the UMW. My is meadowsj@uindy.edu. If you have any questions or know someone you want to attend the event, please contact me. I look forward to serving with all of you!
