1 THE MISSION OF CHRIST CHURCH is to bring all persons to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ through Word, Sacraments, and instruction, as taught through the Episcopal tradition, that all may know the joy and grace of faith, and to share that grace through outreach. The Chronicler Summer 2015 Spotsylvania, VA The Risks of Being a Visitor Why should I invite someone to church? Well, to win a meal for four, of course. Oh, and because Jesus said that we should make disciples of all people. Last summer we had several parishioners share from the pulpit their own story of their faith journey. That exercise was not just to help us get to know the person who might be sitting next to us in the pew, but to encourage us to see our own stories as opportunities for faith sharing, and for proclaiming the Good News. As we enter this summer, we have another opportunity to practice sharing our faith in a relatively safe way. The 3E-vite contest, which stands for Episcopal, Evangelism, and Eating, gives us that opportunity. The contest gives us an excuse to do something that we may have wanted to do for some time, invite a friend, neighbor, co-worker, family member, or acquaintance to church. When I have a Sunday off, I have the habit of visiting other churches in the area. I visit Episcopal churches, and every other kind as well, large churches, small churches, ones with a denominational affiliation, and non-denominational churches. I know, I m a church geek, but there are two reasons why I do this, actually three. The main reason is so I can go to a worship service when I am not here on a Sunday. The other two reasons are 1) to learn how other churches do things worship, music, hospitality, preaching, etc. and perhaps to steal some good ideas, and 2) to remind myself what it feels like to be the stranger, the newcomer. There are many reasons why someone might take the risk of attending a new church for the first time. They might be in the midst of a personal crisis. They might be at a turning point in their life. They may have just relocated to the area, and finding a church is the next thing on the list, right after finding a new bank and a dry cleaner. They may have been invited. The point is, if you haven t done it for a while, visiting a new church can be very stressful. You don t know the traditions. You don t know what s going to happen next, or perhaps even what the heck is happening now. You don t know if people will be nice to you, or even speak to you at all. And you find yourself wondering things like, Am I sitting in someone s favorite pew? and Where s the bathroom? It can be nerve wracking. Every church describes itself as warm and welcoming. Most churches lie. I truly believe, however, that one of the spiritual gifts of Christ Church is that we are in fact warm and welcoming. As you see new faces in church this summer, please remember that the person is probably feeling uncomfortable, unsure, and a bit out of sorts. Know also that he or she has taken a brave step, and has shown himself or herself to be open to hearing the Gospel proclaimed simply in a smile, a handshake, a word of welcome, a gentle encouragement to come join us for worship again.

11 EPISCOPAL CHURCH WOMEN (ECW) The ECW ended its year of monthly meetings with their annual trip to an area historic Episcopal Church. This year the ladies chose Little Fork Church in Rixeyville, Virginia, a few miles outside Culpeper. The drive alone was wonderful as the day was clear, bright and sunny. With the Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance, the rolling hills and open fields, we could enjoy the majesty of God s creation, something we miss in our more urban area. Little Fork Church is a beautiful colonial brick church surrounded by acres of peaceful grounds. Inside it's simple but lovingly maintained in the colonial style with old pine floors, painted turkey blue family pews with doors and no air conditioning. The ladies enjoyed listening to the history of the church by Rev. Jackson and historian, Randy Ruffin. Afterwards Rev. Jackson invited them to join him in a short service. They sang hymns accompanied by Rev. Jackson on guitar. Scripture was read and he lead them in prayer - a lovely service. He presented a book on Little Fork history which will be put on display in the Communications Center for all to enjoy. The group stopped at the Clearwater Grill on the way home for lunch - a favorite restaurant of the ECW ladies. Although there are no monthly meetings during the summer, ECW remains active serving whenever needed. EPISCOPAL CHURCH MEN (ECM) This fine group continues to meet on the second Saturday of each month in the Great Hall at 8 AM, throughout the year. They have a meeting combined with a delicious breakfast. Please join them and find out what they are planning for the future of Christ Church. Their next meeting is scheduled for June 13.
