1 UNITED CHURCH OF DORSET AND EAST RUPERT MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. CELEBRATION SECOND SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY JANUARY 17, 2016
2 WORSHIP SERVICE ~ JANUARY 17, 2016 ~ SECOND SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY ~ MARTIN LUTHER KING CELEBRATION ~ NURSERY CARE AND CHURCH SCHOOL Babies and children of all ages are invited, welcomed and encouraged in worship services. We have a basket in the narthex filled with children's worship activities to use during the worship service. We have a nursery available for newborns and toddlers for your convenience. The nursery room is staffed with two volunteers who would be happy to care for your child while you attend worship. You may drop your children off in the nursery room at 9:45 a.m. and pick them up immediately following worship. All children aged three through 12 are invited to go to church school following the TIME WITH THE YOUNG. SILENT MEDITATION The battle for social injustice isn t just an outer battle, it is an inner battle too. It is a battle of supremacy between the reptilian brain and our spiritual being. The reptilian brain, which lies deep within the human neocortex, is the source of most aggression. It is the origin of self defensiveness, especially of territory. It is the site of impulse and anger rather than generous thought and principled behavior. From the reptilian brain comes sexual bravado and survival instinct. So much of what Jesus taught, how he lived, and who he was, is in sharp contract to all the energies of the reptilian brain. Jesus called his followers to become spiritual beings. To be driven by higher virtues more than self-defense. To resist revenge and pray for one s enemies. To live, not by fear, but by trust in the power of love. To be guided by self-sacrifice more than self-defense. To live by ethics more than instincts. When St. Paul celebrated Jesus as The Second Adam, he was calling Christians to become more evolved. In this day and age, when so much of mass media, politics, television, pop music, and culture appeals to the urges of the reptilian brain, our mission as Christians living in this world is to evolve! GATHERING MUSIC Guitar Selections Brett Grigsby WELCOME, ANNOUNCEMENTS, PASSING OF GOD S PEACE AS WE BEGIN OUR WORSHIP, NOW IS OUR TIME TO SPEAK TO GOD ENTER THE FLAME AND THE WORD Irén Hangen Vázques, Acolyte; Isobel Calfee Beadle CHORAL INTROIT CALL TO WORSHIP (Based on a speech by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.) L: We seek a higher power. P: A power in which to trust. L: A power that lifts us up P: To meet the better angels of our being. L: To be filled with a power "For, rather than power "Over. P: A power that defies instinct and matures the soul. L: We seek the power of Love as lived by Jesus. Let us worship God.
3 *HYMN (CH) # 637 For All the Saints vs 1,4,5 *UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Taken from a prayer by Martin Luther King Jr., given at a Billy Graham crusade, July 18, 1957) L: The Lord be with you. P: And also with you. L: Let us pray. ALL: "We come, 0 God with an awareness. We have not always given our lives to that which is high and noble. In the midst of all the high and noble aspects of justice, we have followed injustice. We stand amid the forces of truth and yet we deliberately lie. We stand amid the urgency of the Lord of Love, and yet we live so often in the dungeons of hate. For all of these sins, 0 God, forgive...grant that our hearts and spirit will be opened to the inflowing power of the Divine. Amen." MOMENT OF SILENT CONFESSION UNISON ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS (Another of King's prayers from the Dexter Ave. Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama) "Oh God, our gracious heavenly Father, help us to see the meaning of Your grace, and help us to realize that in our sinful lives, there is always some hope, there is always a way through, by the power of Your ever-flowing grace. Amen." *THE LORD S PRAYER (trespasses) GLORIA PATRI Glory Be To The Father and To The Son And To The Holy Ghost. as It Was In The Beginning, is Now And Ever Shall Be; world Without End, Amen, Amen.
