1 EASTER SUNDAY April 12, 2009 Welcome. We hope this service lifts your spirit and warms your heart. We offer many helps this morning: large print bulletins, child care, coloring kits. Ask any usher. Is your cell phone set to play hymns? 9:40 a.m. VOLUNTARY Saraband for the Morning of Easter (1949) Herbert Howells Easter Medittion No. II (1944) Robin Milford Improvisation on Alleluia, Pascha Nostra (1938) Everett Titcomb 10:00 a.m The Approach to God GREETING Daniel Carlson ANNOUNCEMENTS AND WORSHIP ORIENTATION CALL TO WORSHIP Bill Levering INTROIT The Strife is O'er Victory *PROCESSIONAL HYMN #123 Jesus Christ Is Risen Today Jesus Chris is risen today, Alleluia! Our triumphant holy day, Alleluia! Who did once upon the cross, Alleluia! Suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia! Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluia! Unto Christ, our heavenly King, Alleluia! Who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia! Sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia! But the pains which He endured, Alleluia! Our salvation have procured; Alleluia! Now above the sky He s King, Alleluia! Where the angels ever sing. Alleluia! Easter Hymn Sing we to our God above, Alleluia! Praise eternal as God s love; Alleluia! Praise our God, ye heavenly host, Alleluia! Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia! *OUR NEED FOR GOD (unison) God of new life, we lift our hearts in thanksgiving for the hope you have brought us in Jesus Christ. Help us to find new depth in the message of your love. Amen. GOD S FORGIVING LOVE *RESPONSE OF PRAISE *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (from the Belhar Confession, unison) God s life-giving Word and Spirit have conquered the powers of sin and death, bitterness and enmity. It will enable us to live in a new way and open new possibilities of life for all people. *PASSING THE PEACE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed by thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. ANTHEM Christ is Alive! Truro Christ is alive! Let Christians sing. The cross stands empty to the sky. Let streets and homes with praises ring. Love, drowned in death, shall never die. Christ is alive! No longer bound to distant years in Palestine, but saving, healing, here and now, and touching every place and time. Not throned afar, remotely high, untouched, unmoved by human pains, but daily, in the midst of life,

2 our Savior in the Godhead reigns. In every insult, rift, and war, where color, scorn, or wealth divide, Christ suffers still, yet loves the more, and lives, where even hope has died. Christ is alive, and comes to bring good news to this and every age, till earth and sky and ocean ring with joy, with justice, love and praise. Brian Wren The Word of God FIRST LESSON Acts 10:34-43 (page 129) CHILDREN S MESSAGE SECOND LESSON Mark 16:1-8 (page 54) SERMON Easter Panic Bill Levering The Response to the Word *HYMN #118 The Day of Resurrection! Lancashire The day of resurrection! Earth, tell it out abroad; The Passover of gladness, The Passover of God. From death to life eternal, From this world to the sky, Our Christ hath brought us over With hymns of victory. Our hearts be pure from evil, That we may see argith The Lord in rays eternal Of resurrection light; And, listening to His accents, May hear, so calm and plain, His own All hail! and, hearing, May raise the victor strain. Now let the heavens be joyful, Let earth the song begin, Let the round world keep tripump, And all that is therein; Let all things seen and unseen Their notes of gladness blend, For Chirst the Lord is risen, Our joy that hath no end. OFFERING OFFERTORY Alleluia, Alleluia! Ludwig van Beethoven, Arr. Don Hart Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, Christ is risen! Hearts to heaven and voices raise: Sing to God a hymn of gladness, Sing to God a hymn of praise; He who on the cross as victim For the world's salvation bled, Jesus Christ, the King of Glory, Now is risen from the dead. Alleluia, Christ is risen! Death at last has met defeat: See the ancient powers of evil In confusion and retreat; Once he died and once was buried: Now he lives forevermore, Jesus Christ the world's redeemer, Whom we worship and adore. Alleluia, alleluia! Glory be to God on high! Alleluia to the savior who has gained the victory! Alleluia to the Spirit, fount of love and sanctity! Alleluia, alleluia to the triune majesty! Christopher Wordsworth *DOXOLOGY (Hymn 592) AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION *RECESSIONAL HYMN #115 Come, Ye Faithful, Raise the Strain St. Kevin Anyone interested in singing the Hallelujah Chorus is invited to come forward during this hymn. Come, ye faithful, raise the strain Of triumphant gladness; God hath brought forth Israel Into joy from sadness; Loosed from Pharaoh s bitter yoke Jacob s sons and daughters; Led them, with unmoistened foot, Through the Red Sea waters. Tis the spring of souls today; Christ hath burst His prison, And from three days sleep in death As a sun hath risen. Now rejoice, Jerusalem, And with true affection Welcome in unwearied strains Jesus resurrection! *CHARGE AND BENEDICTION

Mission Trip to Topologo Partners in South Africa Ever since a group of First Reformed Church members visited South Africa in the spring of 2003, there has been a desire and a plan to return. The Mission and Benevolence Committee has proposed to send interested church members and will have some detail to share with interested parties during a meeting after church on April 19 th. Through our relations hip with the Community Hospice here and their support of Hospice and Children Services at Topalogo we have developed a proposed plan to send 5-6 members to visit the Tolalogo Hospice facility Rustenberg and neigh boring Reformed Churches. Volunteers will have an opportunity to work and get to know this program and how we support it. Our first planned trip will be October, 2009 and we are looking for volunteers to make their interest known by contacting Carol DeLaMarter, Karen Hamm, or Stacey Midge. Not sure you can make the commitment for October, 2009 yet, come learn more about the proposed schedule and cost and share your ideas. There will be opportunities to support the Topalogo effort and travel there beyond October, but knowing of your interest now will help planners. Join us at 11:15 on April 19 th for a discussion of dates and costs. It shall be our aim to bring joy to little children, instruction and high ideals to youth, inspiration to men and women in the midst of life, and comfort to those in life's later years; and to labor together for the betterment of humankind. THE COVENANT OF OUR CONGREGATION Adopted by the Congregation in 1962 Our fellowship shall not be dependent upon identity of theological opinion, or of outward circumstance, or of denominational concern, but shall grow from a common loyalty to Jesus, a common commitment to serve the world we touch, and a common purpose to do justly, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with God. Our ideal is a church of the open mind, the warm heart, the hopeful spirit, and the social vision which ever seeks to express, in all walks of life, the mind of Jesus.
