1 FIRST REFOR MED CHURCH SCHENECTADY THE COVENANT OF OUR CONGREGATION We do hereby set forth the principles of the Christian faith as commonly held among us, believing that no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. It shall be our aim to bring joy to little children, instruction and high ideals to youth, inspiration to men and women in the midst of life, and comfort to those in life's later years; and to labor together for the betterment of humankind. Our fellowship shall not be dependent upon identity of theological opinion, or of outward circumstance, or of denominational concern, but shall grow from a common loyalty to Jesus, a common commitment to serve the world we touch, and a common purpose to do justly, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with God. Our ideal is a church of the open mind, the warm heart, the hopeful spirit, and the social vision which ever seeks to express, in all walks of life, the mind of Jesus. Adopted by the Congregation in 1962 November 18, 2007 TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST November 18, 2007 Is your cell phone on? What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6:8) 9:40 a.m. VOLUNTARY Hymn Preludes for the Autumn Festivals Wilbur Held 1. 2 *RESPONSE OF PRAISE Gloria Patri (Hymn 579) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen. *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. *PASSING THE PEACE Greet each other saying Peace be with you. or similar words. MINUTE FOR MISSION Senior High Youth Group ANTHEM We Plough the Fields, and Scatter J.A.P. Schulz, arr. John Rutter We plough the fields, and scatter the good seed on the land, But it is fed and watered by God's almighty hand; He sends the snow in winter, the warmth to swell the grain, The breezes and the sunshine, and soft refreshing rain: All good gifts around us are sent from heav'n above, Then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord for all his love. He only is the maker of all things near and far. He paints the wayside flower, he lights the evening star. The winds and waves obey him, by him the birds are fed; Much more to us his children, he gives our daily bread: M. Claudius, trans. Jane Campbell (1861) The Word of God FIRST LESSON Isaiah 65:17-25 (page 696) Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. CHILDREN S MESSAGE *HYMN 453 O Holy City, Seen of John Morning Song (vss. 1 & 2 Choir; vss. 3 & 4 Choir and Congregation) SECOND LESSON Luke 21:5-19 (page 85) Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. SERMON Heavenandearth Bill Levering 3 The Response to the Word OFFERING OFFERTORY Canticle of Heaven Craig Courtney Those who are clothed in white, who have washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb, who are before the throne of God, who serve Him day and night within His temple; and He who sits upon the throne will spread Hi tent over them. They shall hunger no more; they shall thirst no more. The sun shall no strike them, nor scorching heat. For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will shepherd them; He will lead them to springs of living water; God wil wipe every tear from their eyes. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying: "Now is the dwelling o God with us all, and he shall dwell with us; we will be His people, and God Himself will be with them and be their God. There will be no more death, no more mourning or crying or pain; for the old order of things ha passed away." *DOXOLOGY (Hymn 592) AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed by thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. *RECESSIONAL HYMN 559 We Gather Together Kremser *CHARGE AND BENEDICTION CHORAL RESPONSE (Please be seated until the Postlude begins) Go Into the World Dale Wood POSTLUDE Marche Triomphale Nun danket alle Gott *The congregation may stand * * Worship Notes * * 4 Sigfrid Karg-Eler We welcome all who gather to worship God this morning. The song was included in the RCA hymnal Rejoice in the Lord (1985). The early results of the stewardship campaign indicate that families are pledging for 2008 at a current average rate of 20% greater than There will be a follow-up letter this week and phone contacts beginning November The worship committee continues to receive input about elements of the worship service. In particular, lively engagement about the Passing of the Peace is afoot. Congregation members are encouraged to seek discernment about this in prayer, informed discussion, and consultation with the worship committee on the web (a poll is there) or by contacting the chair, Sara Howes. 5. The boiler at 10 N. Church is limping badly and will be replaced. 6.
