So writes one of the contributors to The Life of Meaning, by Bob Abernethy and William Bole and the contributors to PBS' Religion and Ethics News Weekly. This morning we will hear about those spaces in our experience, sometimes called "transcendent." The dictionary defines transcendent as "going beyond ordinary limits, emphasizing the intuitive and spiritual." The selections on the Johnson Library display table this morning attempt to address this phenomenon that each of us has experienced from time to time, and experiencing it, wish for more. Faith Bookshop Along with other items related to our church history, the Bookshop has two give-aways: a tape cassette of Ours Is To Hope, by Rev. Al Smith and Michael Tebbano (1990) with any Bookshop purchase, and a quiz on our church treasures. Camp Fowler Construction Briefing today during First Forum As part of Fowler s 5 Year Master Plan, a new Camp Office will be built as a welcoming point to Fowler for campers, parents and visitors arriving each week during camp. The project will be led by John Van Oort, and we can use everyone s assistance in building. No experience necessary, will train! Want to learn to build? Consider this a continuing education project. We will show you how to use power tools, hand tools so that you can tackle some of those projects around your house. The walls will be built locally in the Welch s barn and then taken up to Fowler to erect on site. So there will be plenty of opportunities to assist both locally and up at Fowler. Winter Vacation Bible School Feb from 3-5pm Each day we will explore a new Bible story and related verses. Each day there will be crafts. Each day there will be games. Each day there will be songs. Each day there will be skits and drama. Each day there will be a healthy snack. Each day we will add a color (or two) to our rainbow. You just won t believe the third floor! Children ages 5 95 are welcome to attend! Bring your friends and neighbors. Please call the church office to register FRC Ash Wednesday, February 17 begins our observance of Lent. Check out the Green Space in Assembly Hall for our current team members as well as recent news and views related to creation care. Winter Snowshoe Frolic It s time once again to frolic with your First Church friends. On February 28, following worship and first forum, we will leave to find the peace of God in the hills near the Helderberg Mountains. Our destination is Bennett Hill, a nature preserve south of Albany in Clarksville. The hill is located just outside the village and rises about 400 feet above the village below. The trail ascends gradually until it reaches the top of the hill. Once at the top, there is a trail which circles the relatively flat summit. From there you can see Albany in the distance. This is a moderate hike but may require snowshoes because of the time of year. Transportation will be provided but please make your own arrangements for snowshoes. Pack a lunch and appropriate clothing. A sign-up sheet will be posted on the Fellowship board in Assembly Hall. Group V Invites all interested women of the church to join them at their March meeting, Monday, March 1st, at 11:00 a.m.in the Dirck Romeyn Room. The program will be "A Conversation with Dr. Levering." The business meeting will follow the program. Bring a brown bag lunch and dessert and beverage will be provided. Any questions, please call Charlotte Greenwood, Youth Group The JHYG will meet on February 21 at 5pm. No meeting for SHYG.

6 FIRST REFORMED CHURCH SCHENECTADY THE COVENANT OF OUR CONGREGATION Adopted by the Congregation in 1962 We do hereby set forth the principles of the Christian faith as commonly held among us, believing that no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. It shall be our aim to bring joy to little children, instruction and high ideals to youth, inspiration to men and women in the midst of life, and comfort to those in life's later years; and to labor together for the betterment of humankind. Our fellowship shall not be dependent upon identity of theological opinion, or of outward circumstance, or of denominational concern, but shall grow from a common loyalty to Jesus, a common commitment to serve the world we touch, and a common purpose to do justly, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with God. Our ideal is a church of the open mind, the warm heart, the hopeful spirit, and the social vision which ever seeks to express, in all walks of life, the mind of Jesus.
