1 CATHOLIC FAMILY FRATERNAL JOURNAL #280 PUB NO (USPS ) Temple, TX September/October 2016 Happy Thanksgiving! Let s Be Thankful The history books will tell you that the first Thanksgiving was celebrated by the pilgrims in Not true! Although it was not commemorated as such, the first American Thanksgiving was actually celebrated on September 8, 1565 in St. Augustine, Florida. The Native Americans and Spanish settlers held a feast and the Holy Mass was offered. The truly first official Thanksgiving celebration occurred on American soil on April 30, 1598 in Texas when Don Juan de Oñate declared a day of Thanksgiving to be commemorated by the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. This was 23 years before the Pilgrims landed. Even if you refer to the historical First Thanksgiving, the Catholic religion was prominent there also. Squanto, the beloved hero of Thanksgiving, was the Native American man who mediated between the Puritan Pilgrims and the Native Americans. Did you know that Squanto was Catholic? History shows he had been enslaved by the English but was freed by Spanish Franciscans. Squanto thus received baptism and became a Catholic. This makes the story of the First Thanksgiving even more ironic, because the Puritan Pilgrims were no fans of Catholicism at all. That is why Thanksgiving became more of a secular holiday that focuses on appreciating what we have and to tolerate other s beliefs. Meditating on Mercy... page 3 District News... page 4 Society News... page 10 In President Lincoln s 1863 Thanksgiving Proclamation, he wrote that we should thank God and commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners, or sufferers in the waning days of the Civil War. This was the origin of the modern Thanksgiving Day holiday we celebrate today. Unfortunately, what was true in 1863 remains today. We take time to appreciate what we have and to remember those we have lost. These days we try to protect the things we appreciate, such as our homes and automobiles. How do we protect them? Of course the answer is insurance. Of all the things we have, most of us appreciate family first, and your family appreciates you! Don t forget when you are insuring your valuables, to insure what is valuable to the rest of your family yourself and your income. Call us now at 844-KJZT-TEX to see how easily you can protect what they need most. Junior News... page 18 New Members... page 21 In Memoriam...page 23

This story is in the Gospel of St. Luke. Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. (Luke 15:22) The lack of a ring tells us his richness comes not from his material wealth, but from his son. Just as God s richness comes from us when we turn to him. The picture shows us that the fathers love for his son is total. This is an important part of understanding true mercy. None of us deserves mercy! We receive mercy from God and touched by his compassion, we then become merciful to others. I am praying for all of you! Please, do the same for me! 9 September/October 2016 Page 9 Vision Loss in Adults By Dr. Ralph Wagner, Medical Adviser How s Business? By Jim Wiest FIC, CFFM, Sales and Marketing Manager Change in vision, especially decreased ability to see or focus is a common issue facing many adults as they accumulate years. Many adults over the age of forty notice changes in how well their eyes can focus on near or far objects. These changes are often easily corrected with lenses including bifocal and trifocal lenses. There are other common eye conditions that become more prevalent with time which affect vision that require medical interventions that we should all be familiar with. Glaucoma refers to an elevated pressure within the eye. The pressure of the eyes is easily measured by most well-trained eye specialists and its management can prevent a major cause of diminished vision. Measurement of the eye pressure is part of a good eye exam. Elevated pressures can be treated with various eye drops, and at times, minor surgical procedures of the eye. Screening for glaucoma is a good reason to have a regular eye exam after age 50. Another cause of serious eye disease is diabetes mellitus. Diabetic retinopathy is damage to blood vessels at the back of the eye (retina) from longstanding high blood sugars. Over time the blood vessels of the retina may leak fluid and affect vision. Doctors treating diabetic patients strongly recommend yearly eye exams to screen for this condition and treat it if present. Good control of blood sugars is recommended for diabetic patients to limit the damage to the eyes. Cataracts become more common with age but other conditions such as trauma to the eye may lead to this clouding of the eye lens. If the lens becomes less clear, vision may become less sharp, circles of light may appear at night, and difficulty reading small print might become apparent. Some elderly individuals may not even complain of a vision problem, but if cataracts show up on an exam, dramatic vision improvement can occur if they are removed. Implantable lenses at the time of cataract surgery can even correct other focus problems which required glasses in the past. Another common retinal issue is macular degeneration which is decreased vision due to changes in the macula, the part of the eye that gives clear, sharp vision. This may be a slow, progressive change in vision. Vitamins and other supplements may slow progression and laser treatments may be of benefit in certain situations. Other illnesses, infections, and injuries to the eyes can certainly affect vision. A good ophthalmologist can be invaluable to helping manage macular degeneration and other common conditions that might affect our vision. Our vision is a wonderful sense allowing us to experience our world every day. We can help preserve it by being aware of these common problems, getting our eyes properly checked, and seeking management of the conditions if they occur. In 2013, Forbe s Magazine published an article about small business in America. The Small Business Administration (SBA) defines a small business as an enterprise having fewer than 500 employees. At that time, there were almost 28 million small businesses in the US and over 22 million were self-employed with no additional payroll or employees (also known as non-employers). To classify as a non-employer business, you must have annual business receipts of $1,000 or more and be subject to federal income taxes. Over 50% of the working population works in a small business. Approximately 75% of all U.S. businesses are non-employer businesses. Over 85% of all nonemployer businesses are sole proprietorships. Most surprisingly, 52% of all small businesses are home-based. Do you own a small business? If not, are you thinking of starting one? Primary among the many things you need to think about with a small business is insurance. Growing a business takes lots of hard work and determination. Without proper insurance coverage, however, a business risks being severely damaged or even destroyed when disaster strikes. To assist you in your endeavors, I have a life guide available that addresses this very important issue. It is called Protecting Your Business and it includes valuable information and checklists that will help you no matter what field your business is in. The life guide is absolutely free with no obligation. Get it for yourself and share it with anyone you know who could benefit from it. To get your copy by or by USPS, please contact me. THE MAGNIFICAT CANTICLE OF MARY My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear Him in every generation. He has shown the strength of His arm, He has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He has sent away empty. He has come to the help of His servant Israel for He has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise He made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children for ever. Amen. EACH DECEASED MEMBER, SOCIAL MEMBER OR ASSOCIATE WITH INSURANCE named in our "In Memoriam" column is remembered by the Catholic Family Fraternal of Texas with an Annual Enrollment in the K.J.Z.T. Clerical Endowment Fund.
