3 January/February 2012 Cat h o l i c Fa m i ly Fr at e r n a l Jo u r n a l Page 3 LENT! A SEASON FOR NEW LIFE By Rev. Joseph Hybner, State Chaplain It s easy to identify a Catholic on Ash Wednesday. Our signature cross of ashes on our forehead tells the truth. After Ash Wednesday, and during the forty days that follow, how do we understand and make known what it means to be a Catholic? What is the significance of the penitential time the Church has designated as Lent in the Liturgical year, and how do we participate in Christ s sacrifice so as to fully experience his Resurrection during the Easter season? During the Season of Lent, the Church asks us to spend more time in intentional prayer, to fast and abstain from meat on designated days and to practice charitable giving for the sake of others. Recalling Jesus forty days and our participation in our own practice is a form of purification that deepens our spiritual center by stripping away all that is unnecessary and by reminding us of our sole reliance on God. In one of his famous homilies, St. Peter Chrysologus, in the year 420 A.D. stressed the unity of the three spiritual practices of Lent: There are three things, my brethren, by which faith stands firm, devotion remains constant, and virtue endures. They are: prayer, fasting and mercy. Prayer knocks at the door, fasting obtains, mercy receives. Prayer, fasting, mercy: these three are one, and they give life to each other. Prayer The bible tells us, In these days he went out into the hills to pray; and all night he continued in prayer to God. Luke 6:12 The cross of ashes on our foreheads is a reminder that at the center of the Lenten Season stands the cross. Meditating on the meaning of the Crucifixion means examining our own sinfulness and praying for the grace and courage to change our ways and walk more closely with Christ. Throughout Lent, we are called to deepen our prayer life. This means a habit of daily prayer, setting aside time each day to share our hopes, joys, fears and frustrations with God. Praying first thing in the morning, while the house is still quiet, to begin each Lenten day and encourage the practice of continual prayer. Fasting He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread. But he answered, It is written, man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Matt 4:2-4. The discipline of fasting helps us recognize our true hunger, for Christ, and seek a closer relationship to him to satisfy that hunger. Fasting, then, becomes more than merely exercising self-control; it can be spiritual and physical purification. In the U.S.A., fasting from food is a reminder of our abundance and a way to walk in solidarity with people around the world who struggle with daily hunger and starvation. Almsgiving Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house? Isiah 58:6-6 One of the central lessons of the cross is compassion; the heavy burdens we carry help us to appreciate the sufferings in others. When Jesus encourages us to help our neighbor, he means anyone who suffers from poverty, brokenness, loneliness, anxiety or fear. While this authentic giving is not easy, sharing what we have been given, through the forty days of Lent and beyond, reminds us that everything we have, even our very life itself, comes from God. In light of this glorious reality, our penances may seem small and insignificant, yet we know they are not. We may have done small things, but if we do them with love, they unite us in a very real way with the Sacrifice of Jesus. Our sacrifices bring grace and healing to our world, sanctity to our souls and a deep enduring joy that allows us to experience Resurrection and conversion at Easter, and for everlasting life. Embracing the cross, enriches life! These ancient practices are beneficial to our physical and spiritual health! Meditation prayer has proven to help lower blood pressure and stress, contributing to better heart health and peace of mind. Refraining from overconsumption leads to a healthier body, a sharper mind, and a spirit more open to the will of God. Giving is good for your health! People who give of their time and treasure have more energy, a stronger immune system, and a sense of overall well-being! Blessings to all and have a rejuvenating Lenten Season! Peace, Love and Joy!

State Office. A retirement celebration was held on Tuesday, February 17, 2012 at 12 Noon at Texas Land and Cattle Steakhouse in Austin in her honor. The tables were beautifully decorated with red roses and silver floating candles. Red roses are Julia s favorite flower and color. There were approximately 50 guests in attendance including old family friends, extended family and those who have worked with Julia over the years. Guests mingled with each other until the party began. President Loretta Stahl asked everyone in attendance to stand and introduce themselves and to tell the crowd how they knew Julia. State Chaplain Father Joseph Hybner offered a prayer before the meal. Lunch was then served, followed by the presentations of Julia s many gifts. State President Loretta Stahl presented Julia with a Texas-shaped plaque as an Award of Service. State Secretary Pam Strickland presented her with a beautiful bouquet of roses. State Treasurer Carrie Janecek presented her with a monetary gift, all on behalf of the Fraternal. For many years, Julia spoke of never having received a watch for all her years of service. Well, on this day, she was presented with two! As well as being offered one from Father Joseph Hybner, his own, before the others were presented. The crowd really enjoyed the list put together by the State Officers and read by State Secretary Pam Strickland titled, The Top 10 Reasons We at the State Office Will Know Julia Retired. All of the State Directors joined together to give Julia presents of their affection. The gifts included a crystal vase and a new piece of luggage that was received with great happiness! Julia has always said she looks forward to traveling during her retirement with her husband Chuck. The Directors also gave Julia a large ceramic figure of Mary. Julia thanked them all with hugs. Julia received many more gifts of love from her friends and colleagues. It was truly a joyous and special occasion. Some of our officers have been in their positions for more than 10 years. Please make plans to attend a society meeting and see how you can help out. Many generations of families have worked very hard to get the societies where they are today. We need more members to be involved to keep the tradition of the local societies alive! Please see p.11 for State Directors District Assignments.

8 Page 8 Cat h o l i c Fa m i ly Fr at e r n a l Jo u r n a l State Directors Annual Report 2011 Greetings! The year 2011 was another challenging year for many Americans and businesses. However, some improvements were seen in the financial world this past year. Our organization, Catholic Family Fraternal of Texas K.J.Z.T., once again, appeared to do well. Our K.J.Z.T. societies throughout Texas helped their parishes, schools, and communities tremendously by their hard work in doing fraternal projects, through their volunteerism, and in their monetary contributions matched by the State Office. Many K.J.Z.T. societies and members were called upon to help their fellow man during the disastrous fires in Bastrop. We, State Directors, want to acknowledge the members good works and express sincere gratitude to all of you who have helped our communities and parishes and have kept our organization strong and viable. You are all to be praised for a job well done. As State Directors, we participate in Board Meetings and special called meetings in Austin, visits to our societies in the districts we serve, as well as their District Meetings, and attend the Fraternal Alliance of Texas Convention, where we learn about new trends and practices as well as learn what other fraternals in Texas are doing. We participate in continuing education classes for license renewal, One Hundred Year Celebrations of Societies, and the State Juniors Division Day and Awards Ceremony. Some Directors attend and participate in the Juniors Summer Camp and meetings of the Czech Education Foundation of Texas and the Texans of Czech Ancestry Organizations. Also, the Directors present scholarships to our youth and help in obtaining financial aid for our needy, deserving members beset by some tragedy. On the financial side, the State Directors try to keep abreast of economic trends in order to be better able to make the best sound and profitable investments for our organization so that we can continue to grow. We, also, do inspections of houses and property that are connected to mortgage loans made to our members, and we sell life insurance policies, IRAs, and Annuities. We try to recruit new members for our organization and are there to help our members in the districts we are assigned. Many of us, Directors, hold positions in our local societies such as, President, Treasurer, Secretary, or Youth Director. We enjoy serving in these capacities as well. We continue to stress the Spiritual and Fraternal benefits of our society and participate in them as well. We feel that these endeavors are important to our members and societies. We are grateful for all the many blessings and benefits we have received in 2011, and we look forward to working with our members this coming year. We are always available to be of assistance to our members and societies whenever necessary. Once again, we thank you for allowing us to serve as your State Directors. We look forward to seeing many of you at our K.J.Z.T. functions this year. January/February 2012 Annual State Officer s Report Catholic Family Fraternal of Texas-K.J.Z.T. has accomplished what many businesses and organizations have been unable to do. That is to prosper and grow for a period in excess of 118 years. Many changes have taken place, products have been enhanced, procedures for conducting the business have improved and growth and membership have continued. However, the Fraternal Spirit of the Members of this great organization has remained as strong and reliant as it was in the beginning. The gifts our Membership share with others, the needs they recognize, and the solutions offered to problems both in our parishes and our communities, only mirror those of long ago. The belief in being there for others is still a priority for all who are active within our local Societies. It is with great pride that the State Officers represent this Fraternal throughout the year. We have attended the Board of Directors Meetings, both scheduled and special called meetings. We have traveled throughout the State of Texas attending District Meetings and Society celebrations and have had the pleasure of meeting so many wonderful Members. We have attended seminars to enhance our knowledge and to keep the business in compliance with the many regulatory bodies we are governed by such as the Texas Department of Insurance and the National Association of Insurance Counselors. We attended the Fraternal Alliance of Texas convention in La Grange, meeting with fellow Fraternalists from all over the State and the annual bowling tournament in New Braunfels. The State Officers also enjoyed attending the Junior Awards Day during the summer hosted by Society No. 23, Hostyn. The summer camp for the Junior Members was also a great success due to the number of Members and Junior Directors who participated. We are very proud of our Junior Members and recognize them as the future of this organization. As State Officers, we must follow the guidelines of the Constitution and Bylaws and complete any tasks assigned by the Board of Directors, in addition to the day to day responsibilities of each of our respective offices. In conjunction with the State Directors and Marketing Department, we assist in promoting the Fraternal and increasing membership through the sale of insurance and annuities. We could not achieve these tasks and duties alone. We are blessed with dedicated staff members who strive to assist the State Officers and provide excellent customer service to the Members. We also wished long time friend and colleague, Julia Hrncir-Quinn farewell. Mrs. Hrncir-Quinn retired after serving Catholic Family Fraternal of Texas-K.J.Z.T. for thirty-three years. We appreciate her years of service and wish her and her husband Chuck a wonderful retirement. We thank you for the opportunity to serve as your State Officers. In young children, most burns happen when a hot object or liquid is pulled off of the stove or countertop. Older children and teenagers typically get burns from playing with lighters, firecrackers or gasoline. Adults can get burns from sun exposure, touching hot objects and accidents. How can I prevent burns? Most burns are accidental, so it s important to be careful in situations where you or your children can be exposed to the sun, flames and hot objects and fluids. Set the temperature on the water heater in your house to less than 120 degrees Fahrenheit or 48.9 degrees Celsius. Always test bathwater. Never leave a child alone in the bathtub or near water faucets. Use the back burners of the stove when children are present. Never hold a child when working with or around hot objects. Do not leave a child around a fireplace without an adult. Check smoke alarms in your home every month. Keep matches, firecrackers, gasoline and other explosives out of reach of children. How can I treat minor burns at home? If you get a minor burn (one that is red and painful, but does not blister), apply cool water (not ice) to the area for five to 30 minutes. Do not put butter or oil on the burned skin. Cover the damaged skin with aloe vera or an antibiotic ointment (like Neosporin) and apply gauze or a bandage. Do not pop blisters. You can take over-the-counter pain medicine such as ibuprofen. Should I go to the doctor? Call your doctor right away if you think your burn might be serious, if you have blisters, or if the area is very painful or does not heal quickly. Go the emergency room if you have an electrical burn or a burn on your face. This information is provided to you by your doctor and the American Academy of Family Physicians. By Jim Wiest FIC, CFFM, Sales and Marketing Manager Page 9 In the 1800 s, the family farm was the mainstay of the economy in Texas, but that economy was tough and unforgiving. The family farm was usually selfsustaining, but every now and then help from others was needed, such as when a barn needed to be built. The community would then step in friends, relatives, neighbors and just plain townspeople would then come to help out by having a Barn-Raisin. Not only would the barn be built, but usually everyone enjoyed working with each other and sharing food and drink as well as building friendships and relationships. This activity spawned the Mutual Aid Societies and soon after the Fraternal Benefit Societies. Welcome to the Family 2012 is K.J.Z.T. s version of a barn-raisin! Everyone benefits when K.J.Z.T. grows and this program enables everyone to have a part in that growth! It is an effort that involves all aspects of K.J.Z.T. from the Officers and Directors, Marketing Dept., Agents, Local Societies, Junior Societies and individual members all striving toward one goal increased membership! A statewide goal of 500 Issued Certificates (which is more than double 2011 count) has been set as our ultimate goal. This is where we need YOU! It is a long-held belief that greatness comes from within and in our case from within our members! I am sure that you have family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers and others who would be great members of K.J.Z.T. but are not. Why aren t they members? Because you have not invited them! K.J.Z.T. is asking you to recommend someone to join! Simply fill out the card on the back page and send it in or give to any K.J.Z.T. officer or agent. We will contact the folks you recommend and invite them to become members, no high pressure, just an invite! As I said earlier, everyone benefits when K.J.Z.T. grows, so how do you benefit when you recommend someone? For every card you submit, you are entered into $50 drawings every 2 months and prizes at year end including a Grand Prize of a Las Vegas Vacation, $1,000 and $500 gift cards! You are entered one time for every card you send in, whether or not the person joins K.J.Z.T. or not! All we ask is that you make sure the person you are recommending is aware that we will be calling to invite them to be part of us! But that is not all! All Junior members are being asked to invite their friends, family, and others in a similar contest with the Grand Prize of a Disney Vacation, with similar second and third prizes. Who can you recommend? K.J.Z.T. membership is open to all Catholics, their non-catholic family members, and any relatives to any degree by blood or marriage, no matter what their religious status is. Remember, the more people you recommend, the better your chances of winning a Grand Prize! You can recommend present members as well as non-members all qualified entries count! For more information or to get some more recommender cards, call the State Office or go to The Drive has started! The Race is on! Make it so we can tell everyone, Welcome to the Family

Alumni Give Back to the IWBS Sisters January/February 2012 By Anne Wick, State Co-Ordinator of Jr. Activities For the past 8 years a group from the St. Paul High School in Shiner, Class of 1989, have been giving the IWBS Sisters a Christmas gift to show their appreciation from their days at St. Ludmila. They purchase and deliver Shiner Strudels just in time for the Christmas Holidays. This year they delivered 39 strudels to the sisters assuring they would have a good supply of homemade goodies. All the Sisters in the IWBS Motherhouse in Victoria are very appreciative of this gesture but the Sisters that have taught in Shiner often say we get a little taste of Shiner again. The former students enjoy this once a year visit with the sisters and are happy to give something back to them. Pictured (L to R in front) are Sister Elaine, Philip Pilat ( 89), Halle Pilat, Bobby Kneifel ( 89), Gracie Pilat, Noah Leist, Kade Leist and Sister Sylvia. Other Alumni from the class of 89 not pictured are Dwayne Maly and Clarice (Thibodeaux) Butler. Denise Leist is the Junior Director for Society No. 5 Shiner and Noah and Kade are active members. Monica Peters is a member of Society No. 53 Weid. Join Hands Day 2012 is Saturday, May 5, Have YOU started planning yet? Ideally, your junior division should be connecting with different groups, organizations or businesses in your area. This will bring attention to K.J.Z..T. and demonstrate the good work you do! One idea is to collect chairs of various shapes and sizes, paint them and offer them for auction for a worthy cause! Or collect stuffed animals, write messages to include and give them to the local police department for comforting children or make cards for children s hospitals. These are just a few suggestions. You can find more ideas at Raffle tickets for sale! Cookbooks for sale! Support the juniors by purchasing these items and help them get to camp. Pope Benedict XVI's Prayer Intentions March 2012 General Intention: Contribution of Women. That the whole world may recognize the contribution of women to the development of society. Missionary Intention: Persecuted Christians. That the Holy Spirit may grant perseverance to those who suffer discrimination, persecution, or death for the name of Christ, particularly in Asia. April 2012 General Intention: Vocations. That many young people may hear the call of Christ and follow him in the priesthood and religious life. Missionary Intention: Christ, Hope for Africans. That the risen Christ may be a sign of certain hope for the men and women of the African continent. If you haven t already, turn your Point and Merit Forms in. These points will get you to Junior Division Awards Day, hosted by 49 Needville on July 21st. This year s camp will be June 21st-24th. Active and non-active juniors who are age 7-18 may attend. It is a great way to get to know K.J.Z.T. juniors from around the state! Father, I thank you for the night and for the pleasant morning light, for rest and food and loving care, and all that makes the world so fair. Help me to do the things I should, to be to others kind and good, in all I do in work or play, to be more loving every day.

28 Page 28 Cat h o l i c Fa m i ly Fr at e r n a l Jo u r n a l Sister Rebecca Janecek Rotu Catholic Mission P.O. Box 105 Marigat Kenya, E. Africa Please note new address. rebeccajanecek@yahoo.com Sister Rebecca Writes... January/February 2012 Dear everyone, May you receive many blessings during this season of Christmas when we celebrate Love having entered our world in the form of a man who taught us what it means to love and be loved! I hope this letter finds all of you doing well despite the economic problems that many experienced this past year. I am grateful that although many of you had difficulties meeting your own obligations at home, you still had the heart to help others across the world. May I assure you that I tried to be a good steward and your gifts reached those who needed them. I just noticed that April was the last time I wrote a newsletter. Where has the time gone? Many things have taken place since that last letter. The main thing being that on the 17th of November Fr. Sean McGovern, CSSp, officially joined me here in Rotu. We are now living and working here on a permanent basis. Barpello is still our base community as both his Holy Ghost brothers and my Incarnate Word sisters are our core communities. Our intention is to keep in very close contact with them visiting on a regular basis and daily communication via satellite telephone. We have been here (I am writing this while in Rotu) for 10 days now and the people are delighted with our more permanent presence. Last Sunday we celebrated Eucharist in a newly constructed shade with a group of 50 men, women and children. We are in early days of Christian pre-evangelization so the service was one mainly of instruction. The drought that hit Kenya earlier this year continued unabated until mid- August. A cry went out across the world and people responded generously with food and funds. The Catholic Missions in East Pokot were able to help alleviate the hunger by passing on the world s generosity. Here in Rotu we have been feeding 1,500 families from 7 communities that are within the Mission s immediate reach. These include 2 communities from neighboring Turkana with whom we share a boundary and an access road. Since August, we have distributed 22,500 kilograms of food in the form of dehydrated vegetables, beans, maize (corn), finger millet flour, maize flour, salt and cooking oil. In December, we will bring another 17,500 kilograms the week before Christmas. Even though we have had rain, the people are still recovering from the drought because many of their animals died. With Fr. Foley continuing to build the classrooms for the primary school and Fr. Sean coming to take up permanent residence, I decided we needed more sleeping accommodations at the Mission. Thus earlier in the year I began seeking a way to build guest bedrooms. God is good, and with the help of some generous donors, I was able to build a 2-room, 4-bed guest house during the month of October. It is equipped with solar electricity, water from two 6,000 liter rainwater catchment tanks and a solar hot water system that provides the opportunity to take a hot shower in the outdoor, open-to-the-sky shower. Another noteworthy activity that took place during the year was the Shoes for Africa project that was initiated by the school children of the Victoria Catholic Diocese in Texas. During the months of Lent, the children gathered their pennies together to buy shoes for the children in and around Rotu. Children of all ages and sizes came to get their pair of shoes or waited along the road as I drove by. Somehow the parents decided that those children who were able to find a pair of shoes to fit them were destined to go to school. When the Rotu Community Primary School opened under the shade of a tree on September 20th, all those who had shoes were automatically allowed to attend. A discovery was made a few months ago that there is mobile telephone network from our local Kenyan Safaricom provider in a place 3 kilometers from the Mission. We quickly marked the spot with a dab of paint and recently have constructed a small hut within which we can make phone calls or access the internet on our laptop computers with a bit of comfort and protection from the equatorial sun. The internet access is not all that great (sometimes it is very slow or non-existent), but it is better than nothing! Thus is the continuing story of the developments in Rotu. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Know you are loved and remembered in my prayers! - Sister Rebecca Top Left: Learning the sign of the cross from Fr. Sean. Top right: The 1st Rotu Catholic Mission Church. In the background is the new primary school. Bottom left: Outdoor shower with solar hot water and solar electricity. Bottom right: Paint marks the spot where there is reception for cell phones and internet access for computers. Sister Rebecca Janecek is a member of Society No. 101 Victoria. She has worked as a nurse in Kenya, East Africa since 1987 with the small nomadic Pokot tribe of people helping them establish a health care system. In 2004, the medical program was handed over to the local community. Now, she has started another health education program among the same people, but in another more remote area that is without regular medical services. If you would like to share in this African endeavor, please send donations payable to Incarnate Word Sisters--African Mission Fund, 1101 N.E. Water Street, Victoria, Texas Please indicate whether the funds are to be used for the new medical project, for a well in a remote village, or for training of our African Incarnate Word Sisters. Your prayers are appreciated, as well as any monetary donations that you are able to send.

From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear Him in every generation. He has shown the strength of His arm, He has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He has sent away empty. He has come to the help of His servant Israel for He has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise He made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children for ever. Amen. EACH DECEASED MEMBER, SOCIAL MEMBER OR ASSOCIATE WITH INSURANCE named in our "In Memoriam" column is remembered by the Catholic Family Fraternal of Texas with an Annual Enrollment in the K.J.Z.T.
