Everyone can find a way to help. There are needs for people to prepare and serve evening meals, prepare bag lunches, serve as evening hosts and emergency runners, stay overnight and host our guests, set up the cots and rooms for the arrival and breakdown the cots clean up the rooms when they leave and wash laundry, which is always a great need and blessing (I can arrange pick-up and delivery of the laundry to your home if you cannot make it to the church please call me). Of course, it goes without saying that your financial support of this vital ministry is always welcome. INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT CARITAS YOU MAY NOT KNOW 73% of single adults and 89% of families find housing through CARITAS. CARITAS provides substance abuse counseling. All children are enrolled in school within 24 hours of entering CARITAS! Every willing guest of CARITAS is assigned a case worker who individually works through the legal, mental, medical or financial obstacles standing between the guest and self-sufficiency. All guests of CARITAS in case management are required to save 75% of their earned income into an escrow account, which they will use to secure permanent housing. Sign-up sheets will be posted on the bulletin board. Thoughts, suggestions and ideas for our guests are always welcome. Please contact me. 5 OUTREACH July 2013 PAGE 5 The BAPC Session Reports At its regularly scheduled meeting on June 2, 2013, the Session: Reviewed the new Elder Manual. Elected Jane Chandler as Clerk of the Session; appointed Faye Beigbeder and Nancy Elizabeth Van Auken to serve as Presbytery Commissioners at a meeting on June 18 at Blackstone Retreat and Conference Center. Heard that the Memorial Day Service was well received with 58 congregation and community members in attendance and will be scheduled for A Moment for Ministry will be presented by the various Divisions during each summer service to inform the congregation of the ministries within the Divisions. Heard that Rally Day is planned for September 8. Elders Anzelone, Unroe and Rice will be working to plan the rally. Heard that the choir will be recognized at the June 30 service. Heard that BAPC will host CARITAS from July 27-August 2. Heard that Stop Hunger Now will be done again this year. Heard a request from Pastor Winslow to take study leave June to attend a session at Princeton University. AN ANCIENT SOAP OPERA Stay tuned Sunday mornings at 10:00 a.m. Summer Sunday worship messages will offer us a summer-long cliffhanger. Will our star climb the ladder of his destiny? How will he manipulate the affections and lives of others? Can he overcome his own fears and uncertainties? What about those plotting against him? We haven't fallen in love with a beautiful paramour and then killed off those who stand in the way of our love. However we can certainly find reflections of ourselves in the life of David. We have struggled with life decisions. We have upset family members and lost loved ones. We sometimes have wondered what God has in store for us. Join us each Sunday and learn more about the man whom God's prophet anointed as the messiah, the King of Israel, who united the kingdom in an all too brief moment of peace and prosperity. July 7: Questioning God's Choice July 14: Up Against Insurmountable Challenges July 21: Getting the One Who Is Out to Get You July 28: Life Beyond Loss More to come in August!

8 PAGE 8 OUTREACH July 2013 SUMMER SABBATH George Gershwin gave us the signature words from that lullaby in Porgy and Bess: Summertime and the living is easy. And so it is. Summer life takes on a different rhythm. Summer gives many of us the opportunity to relax a little more; be refreshed and be recreated by God s renewing Spirit. There is something about summer that calls us to slow down and enter into God s gift of Sabbath. Summer Sabbath is a practice that moves us to rest, reconnect, and reclaim. Rest. God created the world in six days then rested on the seventh (Genesis 2:2-3). When we rest from our labors, we recall the drama of creation and God s cycle of labor and rest. Perhaps this is one reason people like to get close to nature through summer outdoor activities. Rest gives us the opportunity to slow down and acknowledge the blessings in our lives. Reconnect. God said, You shall keep my Sabbath, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, given in order that you may know that I, the Lord, sanctify you (Exodus 31:13). God did not give us the Sabbath as a rule to keep, but as a sign of our relationship with God. Sabbath is a time to rediscover that we belong to God, not to the demands of our daily lives. Reclaim. Jesus healed on the Sabbath (John 5:9), even though the religious leaders regarded it as breaking God s law. By healing on the Sabbath, Jesus reclaimed the day for God s purpose of using it for our health and wellbeing. Maybe it is time for us to reclaim the Sabbath as well. It seems that God s instruction to us is this: Really pay attention to my gift of rest. Receive it. Enjoy it. Bask in it. Delight in it. Treasure it. Make it a high priority. You might want to try some of these Sabbath practices: Drink in sunsets. Make yes your favorite word. Spend time in silence, listening. Delight someone. Find moments of Sabbath in the midst of your day. Develop an astounding appetite for life. Allow yourself to be rich without money. Stop worrying about what is left undone. Express gratitude. Be open to miracles. During the month of July, I will be taking some Sabbath time away. On Monday, July 8, I will be flying back to California to visit with family and friends. Then, on Saturday, July 13, I will head to Berkeley for study leave at my alma mater. I will return to Bon Air for worship on Sunday, July 21. Of course, the foundation of our Sabbath-keeping is Sunday morning worship. It is a time to rest, reconnect, and reclaim who and whose we are. See you Sunday! May God restore and replenish your spirit this summer.
