Call Don Thornburg Following Christmas, Christians enter the season of Epiphany. Traditionally, this is the season when the church celebrates God s revelation; God revealed through Jesus Christ, the Light of the World. Here at Bon Air Presbyterian Church, we will join that celebration and accept Christ s call to be light-bearers and to share the Good News of the Gospel. For us, the Season of Epiphany will be our Season of Hospitality. Throughout the months of January and February, we will explore how we can accept and live out Christ s Great Commission to go and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:18) through acts of Christian Hospitality. 3 OUTREACH January, 2017 PAGE 3 And Glory Shone All Around What a glorious month we have had as we anticipated and celebrated the coming of the Christ Child! Thanks to all of those who helped make our worship celebrations special; those who presented the Scrooge reader s theater, the Advent candle lighters, the choir and bell choir, the acolytes, the sanctuary decoration crew, and everyone who gathered together as a family of faith. What an amazing turnout we had for the Annual Christmas Dinner; well over 200 people feasted and sang and welcomed Santa. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make our dinner such a joyous event; Judy Clayton and the cooks and the cooks and the cooks, the table setters and decorators, the servers and the clean-up crew, the Fellowship Ministry Team, the Dust Cutters and, of course, Santa. We also had a great turn-out for the Christmas musical. Thanks to the youth, children, and their families who spent the last few months learning the songs and script. Our greatest appreciation goes to the director/producer, Deborah Houghton. Thanks to Bruce Miller and the Virginia Rep. folks for the sound system. Thanks to everyone who worked behind the scenes and the photographers and sound folks. Thanks to those who brought delicious delicacies for the pre- and post-production fellowship time. Thanks to everyone who came and caught some of the Christmas spirit that filled the room. There were so many wonderful celebrations during the month of December. Part of the joy that was felt at each of the events, programs, and services was because of all of the people who had come together to celebrate. So many folks who are not church members or worship attendees came to a holiday event. It was joyous, even exciting. Why did they come? They came because they were invited! Research has shown that the majority of people who come to church, come because they were invited. An ad in the paper, a banner at the street, even an internet presence is not what brings most people to church events and services. The most effective way to bring new people in the church doors is by word of mouth. Guests will repeatedly report that a neighbor told them about a church program or a special worship experience; a colleague told them about how much the church meant to them or their kids; or a friend described the power of faith or prayer. Some guests come to a particular church or event because they know someone who will be there. Others come because they want to feel like they are part of a community or want to do something that will help their community. There are many reasons why new guests venture into a church. There are many ways that people are introduced to a faith community. Most times, it begins with a conversation with someone they know. There are some churches that have a sign above the exit door inside the sanctuary that can be read as people leave, You are now entering the mission field. In fact, a common Christian saying is that the mission field is just outside our doors. We at Bon Air Pres engage in many mission endeavors in our community. We participate in several mercy ministries and are leaders in social justice ministry and interfaith dialogue. These are all very important missions beyond our doors. However, it is time for us to acknowledge Christ s Great Commission to another very important mission to share the Good News of the Gospel, to make disciples, baptize, teach, and lead in the way of the Lord. We talk about our desire to grow our congregation. We talk about our desire to have a stronger children, youth, and family ministry. We talk about our desire to raise up new leadership and engage in new and innovative mission and ministry endeavors. We talk about the vitality of the past. Now is the time to move beyond talking and actually get out and do something. We saw what happened in December when people invited family, friends, and neighbors. Let s continue our December practice of friendly invitation throughout the coming year! I encourage everyone to come to church on January 22 and hear Rev. Dr. John Vest inspire us and give us practical suggestions for extending our welcome and sharing our faith. Not only will he be preaching in each service that morning, he will also be leading a workshop during the Sunday school hour. The eight Bon Air members who attended the fall Evangelism Conference at Union Seminary agreed that John was the most informative and engaging speaker at the conference. I am confident that you will not only enjoy John s presentation, you will also come away with new confidence and tools for sharing your faith and extending your invitation to experience the blessing of Christian community and faith in Jesus Christ, Emmanuel. We have a great new year ahead! Praise God for this glorious opportunity. ~ Pastor Janet

4 PAGE 4 OUTREACH January, 2017 InVESTing OURSELVES IN SHARING GOOD NEWS! We are very pleased to have John Vest preaching at our worship services and leading a workshop during the Sunday School hour on January 22. John is an engaging speaker who teaches at Union Seminary and works with churches throughout our presbytery. While at Bon Air, John will offer insights and tools for sharing our faith with others. John currently serves as the Visiting Assistant Professor at Union Presbyterian Seminary where he focuses on evangelism, church growth and vitality, new church development, and ministry among emerging generations. Prior to this appointment he served in congregational ministry for fifteen years in the Chicago area. An enthusiastic pit master, John dreams of one day achieving the mystical union of church and BBQ. Wonderful Support for Peace in our Community! The Church and Society Ministry Team would like to thank everyone for their generosity during our September Peace and Global Witness offering. This is a denominational offering that Bon Air Presbyterian has long supported, and this year we collected over $990! 75% of our offering goes to support Presbyterian peace initiatives and 25% goes to support local community peace initiatives. This year Church and Society has sent our local portion to support the Richmond Peace Education Center s wonderful work promoting peace and conflict resolution in our local community. Thank you once again for your wonderful support and giving hearts. Second Sunday South of the James Presents Ben Houghton January 8-4:00 p.m. Pianist, vocalist, and Richmond-native Ben Houghton returns to Bon Air Presbyterian for an afternoon of classical music and Broadway show tunes, featuring members of the Richmond theater community. He has performed in venues throughout the world including the Metropolitan Opera House, Carnegie Hall, Opera Bastille in Paris, and The United Arab Emirates Palace alongside the stars of Broadway and American Ballet Theater. An offering will be collected to benefit his charity, Broadway's Babies, which provides arts education to underprivileged children around the world. He will present on his adventures teaching music around the world in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and India. The concert will also be a thank you to the BAPC for fostering his love of the arts and his passion for charity. 5 OUTREACH January, 2017 PAGE 5 The BAPC Session Reports Approved the budget for At its regularly scheduled meeting on December 11, 2016, the Session: Approved that a goal be established that benevolences be 10% of the pledges received by the church. Learned that Sean Mitchell will present information from the Focus Groups at the January meeting. Soup and Sandwich with the Pastor HELPING GUESTS FEEL AT HOME The experience starts in the parking lot Greet people and introduce yourself to guests before they even enter the building. Offer helpful information to people who seem to be new or are not sure where to go. Guests won t remember everything you said, but they will remember how you made them feel. The guests experience is the sum of their interactions with everyone they meet. Briefly get to know the guest. Call them by name. Share information and invite guests to church activities and classes. Introduce guests to others, the pastor, those who may have something in common with the guest. Help guests feel comfortable, and appreciated. Let guests know that you look forward to seeing them again. Guest services is not just an ushers ministry. Offer a Welcome Packet to first time guests. Offer children s bulletins to children in a guest family. Instead of giving directions and pointing, walk with the guest. During our Season of Hospitality, Pastor Janet will host hour-long lunch discussions following the 11:00 worship service. The hour will be spent delving deeper into the sermon topic. Those who would like lunch ($5.00 each) are asked to sign up on the Fellowship Board or call the church office by Thursday prior to the Sunday meeting. The first gathering will be on January 15, Looking Back and Finding God in Good Times and Bad. Join us as we are guided in ways to reflect on where God has been active in our personal lives. Acolyte Program A big THANK YOU to all of our acolytes, our acolytes parents, and our adult helpers who have served in The acolytes who served in December were Nicole Gallini, Dana Peace, and Jillian Peace. 8 PAGE 8 OUTREACH January, 2017 BAPC Outreach Mission Supports AFOI Assisting Families of Inmates (AFOI) for the past 39 years has provided key services to families with incarcerated family members. The program began as a transportation program assisting low-income families in Richmond. Today AFOI offers expanded services to include the following: Three Saturdays a month multiple bus trips are provided to 22 of Virginia s state prisons and correctional centers. After the bus riders return to Richmond AFOI volunteers provide the families a hot meal before they return home. To expand the opportunities for families around the state to visit with their incarcerated loved ones, a secure video conferencing link is offered. Through 7 church visitation centers located in Alexandria (2), Culpeper, Norfolk, Petersburg, Richmond, and Roanoke, families can video visit with loved ones in 17 prisons through a partnership with the Virginia Department of Corrections. The Department of Juvenile Justice has selected AFOI to provide transportation service 2 Sundays each month to families and friends of incarcerated juveniles housed in the Bon Air Correctional Center. The Milk and Cookies Children s Program (MAC) provides school-based, age-appropriate small group support for children in 4 selected Richmond Public Elementary Schools (Chimborazo, Fairfield Court, Swansboro, and Woodville). Approximately 70 children are currently enrolled in the MAC program. A Resource Referral Program provides access through AFOI to help clients reach other needed services. Nationwide requests are received for assistance with better housing, food and clothing, and mental health counseling. Bon Air Presbyterian Church supports the work of AFOI through the Church and Society s 2016 outreach mission budget by giving $700. For 2017, the BAPC Endowment Fund awarded a grant of $1,948 to AFOI to expand the well received MAC program into Swansboro Elementary School. Should you want additional information about AFOI, please contact Paul Beigbeder, who serves as an AFOI Board member, or see the AFOI website: Inasmuch, as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. 9 OUTREACH January, 2017 PAGE 9 Colin s Theology Corner Following Christmas, we continue to celebrate the birth of Christ, who we know is God incarnate. So, I thought it would make sense to look a bit closer at what the Presbyterians and the Reformed tradition say about incarnation. In the first paragraph of our Book of Order we claim, By the power of the Spirit, this one living God is incarnate in Jesus Christ, who came to live in the world, die for the world, and be raised again for new life. In the Apostles Creed we claim that we believe in Jesus Christ, God s only son, who is born of the virgin, Mary. Language of the incarnation of Christ can be found at the very foundations of what we do and believe as Presbyterians. So, why is it big deal? What are we celebrating at Christmas? Matthew s Gospel tells us that a child will be born and named Emmanuel, meaning, God is with us. (1:23). So, Jesus is fully God, conceived by the Holy Ghost, yet he is also born of a woman, as all humans are. But, Jesus is not some half-breed, as Shirley Guthrie puts it, which is half human and half God. Instead, Jesus is fully human and fully God. He also makes the distinction that we do not believe Jesus is God because of the virgin birth, but we believe the virgin birth because we have faith in God. The virgin birth is meant to temper the mystery of Jesus birth, while also indicating his humanity. It is important to always recognize both Jesus divinity and humanity. Jesus humanity means that he experienced all that humans experience-joy, pain, hunger, thirst, etc- fully. Jesus divinity means that he is not merely some moral example for us to live by, or the founder of some new religion. Jesus was, and is, God with us. For Calvin, this is important because the only one that could act as mediator between humanity and God had to be fully God and fully human. God s willingness to come into the world as a human shows that God is not reluctant to be in relationship with humanity. God humbles God s self to the point of suffering and dying on a cross, experiencing all the mental and physical pain, showing God s unwavering motivation to be grafted with humanity. So, this is what we believe and celebrate at Christmas, and continue to celebrate now. Jesus Christ, God with us, came into the world showing that God does indeed love and care for us, so much so that God is willing to become fully human. If we want to know what it is to be truly human we can look to Jesus. If we want to know God, we look to Jesus, who is God with us, then, now, and forever. If you have read this and have any further questions or comments, I would be more than happy to discuss them with you or point you to more resources. Also, if this has sparked any other topics that you would like for me to possibly look at you can let me know. You can tell me in person, leave something in my box, or send me an at colin.pettigrew@upsem.edu. CHURCH PHONE ANSWERING MACHINE UPGRADE When you call the church, you will be greeted by our pastor and directed to extensions to reach staff members and get information about our church programs and events. If you would like to skip the message and go directly to the church office, you may dial 0 at any time during the message. Thank you for the generosity of generations. The pledges received during this campaign are equal to those received in the previous year. With your pledge contributions, Bon Air Presbyterian will continue to spread God's good news through our witness and outreach. In His service, your Stewardship Ministry Team
