Schedule for Reformation Sunday October 29, 2017 ONE service - 9:00 a.m. Our Congregational meeting will follow e service (watch for a mailing containing e proposed 2018 budget and e ballot for 2018 church council in mid-october). Sunday School children will be dismissed to e basement immediately following e service for Reformation games and crafts. There will be a Potluck following e meeting! Mark your calendars!!! -1-

2 Caring Corner for October Coats for Kids Alough e temperatures are in e 80's at is writing, winter is coming! Have your kids outgrown eir winter coats from last year? For e mon of October, we will collect winter coats, new or gently used, to be donated to e Coats for Kids distribution at Christ United Meodist Church. Adult coats are also accepted, and free dry-cleaning is donated to clean coats before ey re given out in November. ABC Bags Activity/Busy/Church bags are available on e coat trees at each entryway and in e balcony. Please feel free to take one for your child to enjoy during e worship service, and en return it to e tree afterward. All are welcome to our service, as it is better to have a child wiggle in church an to wiggle out of it. 13 Annual CROP Hunger Walk Sunday, October 1, 2017, at 2 p.m. If it s e first Sunday in October, it must be time for e CROP Hunger Walk! Beginning and ending here at Emanuel, ere is bo a 1-mile (for ose who are limited physically or by time) and a 3-mile route. A unique feature of e CROP Hunger Walks is at 25% of e money raised comes back to e local community, and ese funds will be used to support e churches who serve community meals. Come join in e fun and fellowship of walking wi e world and ending hunger one step at a time. Soulful Stirrings from Soul Food Our weekly Soul Food suppers continue to be served every Wednesday at 5 p.m., and help and participation and eaters are always welcome! We usually start gaering to prep at 3 p.m. We always begin e meal by sharing prayer concerns and a table grace. There is always room for more at e tables...and at e sink for dish-washing, e counter for drying dishes, e broom for sweeping floors, etc. to help wi clean-up. We try to concentrate on healy eating (and less dessert!), so fresh fruit is always welcomed to serve! Picking up kids from After School Club? Bringing kids to catechism class? Coming for bell or choir practice? Don t feel like cooking? Just wanting to enjoy some fellowship? Come for supper at Soul Food! ALL are welcome! -2-

4 Conference Fall Gaerings Join Bishop Daniel Beaudoin for dessert, fellowship, worship, and learning at e Fall Gaerings! This non-conference specific event will take place at five different congregations across Norwestern Ohio. Each gaering will begin at 6:30 p.m. wi a Taize service followed by e Bishop s Bake Off. Each gaering has been given eir own special flavor. Everyone is invited to bake eir favorite recipe at fits e flavor eme or, if you re more of an eater an a baker, vote on your favorite dessert! Because is is a non-conference specific event, we invite you to attend e gaering at best fits your culinary skills! Voting will be done by making monetary donations at will directly benefit e Discipleship Institute. The dessert wi largest amount of donations wins a prize selected by Bishop Beaudoin! What is e Discipleship Institute? The Discipleship Institute will be a center of learning for our synod. The Institute will provide spiritual grow and learning opportunities, leadership and discipleship development, and will focus on raising up and training bo lay and rostered leaders as life-long learners equipped for discipleshipmaking and ministry in e church. The Institute is still in e planning phase, and your support will provide a financial base for its launch. Sunday School Animal Sunday in October will be Hurricane Sunday nd For five years now, e 2 Sunday of each mon is Animal Sunday for e Sunday School kids, when ey can give eir offering money at morning toward e purchase of eir choice of six different animals a sheep, a pig, a goat, a hive of honeybees, a cow, or a flock of chicks rough ELCA World Hunger. Wi e news of e hurricanes in Texas, Florida, and e Caribbean, and e earquake in Mexico, one of e Sunday School kids suggested at we change an Animal Sunday to a Hurricane Sunday (anks for e idea, Rob Hoffman!), and so, on October 8, our Sunday School kids will be collecting a special offering for hurricane/earquake/disaster relief rough e Lueran Disaster Response. If you d like to add to is, please feel free to bring YOUR offering down to e basement for Sunday School opening at 9:15 a.m. on October 8. We will also donate e $75 prize money from our float in e fair parade to is effort. -4-

5 Notes from Angela - Angela Tonjes Choir Rehearsals continue each Wednesday from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in e sanctuary. We will be working on all e music for fall, plus numbers for e Christmas season. The choir will sing on Sunday, October 1, at e 8:00 service and Sunday, October 8, at e 10:30 service. Note at e service on e 8 will NOT include communion. Songs for ese services include Agnus Dei, Did You Think to Pray?, and Song of Farewell. On Sunday, October 29, e choir will sing several numbers for e special Reformation service at 9:00 a.m. Titles include God Is Our Refuge, We All Are One in e Lord, and He Never Failed Me Yet. Living Spirit Living Spirit practices continue on Wednesdays in October from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Please note at ese rehearsals will be in e chapel. On October 15, Living Spirit will lead e worship at bo services. Special music includes a Francesca Battistelli song, This Is e Stuff (wi ukulele!). Living Spirit will also sing for e Reformation service on October 29 at 9:00 a.m. A song by Ten Avenue Nor entitled What You Want will be presented. Emanubells Practices in October will be on Wednesdays from 5:30-6:00 p.m. in e sanctuary. The ringers are preparing music for e first two Sundays of e mon. After School Club After School Club is starting Wednesday, October 4. There will be snacks, music, crafts, Bible stories, and games. Children will meet Gary and Jamie by e flagpole after school, and transportation will be provided from school to church by e Henry County Transportation Network. Parents can pick up eir child at 5:00 from e upstairs room at e end of e hall. Because it is so important to share eir music and e love of Jesus, e children will be singing once a mon at various places around Napoleon. Worship We have returned to our regular schedule of worship, 8:00 and 10:30 a.m. each Sunday, PLEASE NOTE: ere will be only one service at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 29, due to e special Reformation service. Thursday night services continue all rough October at 7:00 p.m. (continued on next page...) -5-

6 (...from previous page) Reformation Sunday This year, Lueran churches across America are celebrating e 500 anniversary of e Reformation on Sunday, October 29. Emanuel will have ONE service at day at 9:00 a.m. This service will include a great amount of special music from our musicians and will highlight e five solas of e Lueran religion: Sola scriptura (by Scripture alone) Sola Fide (by fai alone) Sola gratia (grace alone) Solus Christus (Christ alone) Soli Deo gloria (glory to God alone) Oer events for at day include: Congregational meeting immediately following worship; Sunday School children will be dismissed to e basement for Reformation games and crafts. Potluck dinner following e meeting. Remember to WEAR RED! You Gaering Fundraiser The young people attending e National You Gaering in Houston next year will be crafting nativities for a fund-raising project. These manger scenes will be beautiful, child-friendly, and will make excellent Christmas gifts. Sample nativities will be on display in October. A limited number will be made for a free-will donation, and ey will be ready by December. Reformation Recipe Booklet A recipe booklet of favorite traditional dishes is being put togeer for Reformation Sunday. We would like to collect one or more recipes from each family of Emanuel, someing traditional you bring to a church potluck (red jello? potato salad?), or just someing at is special in your family (tator tot casserole? beef roast?). your recipes to Judy Hoffman at 2judi@bright.net or turn in to e church office. Deadline is October 1. Booklets will be available on October 29 at e Reformation service at 9:00 a.m. Please consider making your favorite recipe for e potluck dinner! Photographs will be taken on Saturday, October 21; Sunday, October 22; and Tuesday, October 24. God s Work, Our Hands Concert Calling All Music-types!! Luer said at Next to e Word of God, e noble art of music is e greatest treasure in e world. To celebrate e 500 anniversary of e Reformation, we will be having a God s Word - Our Hands concert! The Puppets from Bowling Green will be in attendance! All are invited to participate wi a SINGLE stipulation you MUST use your hands. You can play an instrument, sign while singing or put on a puppet show, but you MUST use your hands to express God s Word, God s love, God s gift! If you would like to use your hands to demonstrate God s work, nd please see Carol Castello or Holly Mohring by October 22. Prior to e concert we will have a soup and dessert meal (made wi e hands of your Church Council) wi a free will donation for e Building Fund. (It will be a Mighty Fortress for our Mighty Fortress!) 9 Membership News Baptisms We will be privileged to witness e baptisms is mon of: Christian Thomas, son of Aaron & Kay Kolodziejczyk, on October 1; Andrew Vernon, son of Brandon & Kara Behnfeldt, on October 22. Reformation 500 Crawl You are invited to an exciting opportunity to learn about our Lueran past, present, and future in Norwestern Ohio! On October 21, congregations all over e synod will be providing a Reformation-related experience. Each site will be open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Some will be open house format wi congregation members greeting you and talking about e significance of eir property or programs. At oer sites, a speaker will offer a short (20-30 minutes) presentation on a variety of topics at 10:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., or 1:30 p.m. And, it s all FREE! Check out e posters on e bulletin board in e narex or e hallway near e church office for a map of e different sites. Remember your angel ornaments for e Angel Tree in December! Ring ose bells! Check your calendars now for volunteering to ring e bells at e Salvation Army red kettles at Walmart. Emanuel has committed to filling e schedule for Saturday, December 2. There are 2-hour shifts from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. for bo doors at e Napoleon Walmart. Funds from is effort support e Henry County Salvation Army roughout e coming year. -9-
