3 THE GRAND MASTER OF GRAND LODGE OF NEWFOUNDLAND & LABRADOR Greetings Brethren, it would appear as if the cold winds and snow of winter are behind us as we start to see the changing signs in nature. Spring has sprung and summer is just around the corner. We hope!!!!!!!!! Speaking of changes let me congratulate the Editor of Fraternal Tidings on his selection of this month s cover page. It depicts a picture of the Whiteway Memorial Tablet located behind the Master s chair in the Lodge Room at Freemason s Hall. This Memorial Tablet was unveiled January 22, 1912 on the evening prior to the consecration of Whiteway Lodge, in memory of the late Sir William Whiteway. Sir William Valence Whiteway became the Master of Avalon Lodge when it was formed in 1858, and later first Deputy District Grand Master of the District Grand Lodge of Newfoundland in 1871 and seven years later the District Grand Master. Celebrating 50 years of Masonry in 1900 he was presented with a gold cup by the City Lodges. Sir William V. Whiteway laid down his working tools on the 24 th of June In June most Lodges are engaged in making final preparations for their year end meetings. In my estimation it has been a successful and rewarding year. Many thanks, Brethren, for your support and dedication. As for two Lodges, in our Jurisdiction, the month of June marks a significant milestone in their history. For it was on the 16 th of June 1911, one hundred years ago both Whiteway Lodge # 8 and Botwood Lodge # 9 came into being under the English Constitution. They stand firm today bearing the same date on their charters. For both Lodges it is a time for celebrations. Both have arranged re-dedication ceremonies, anniversary banquets, and more. On behalf of the Grand Lodge, I extend sincere congratulations to these Lodges and look forward to participating and celebrating with you. Brethren when I think of my theme Foresight thru Reflections I sometimes have a tendency to reflect well into our past when Freemasonry began in our province, circa, mid 1700 s. Historically, we have achieved much. From our continued support and dedication, we see the continuation of the Patrick Tasker Masonic Educational Fund (PTMEF) and other Scholarship Programs that are available to dependants of members of our Fraternity, as well as the contributions to various charitable organizations. We can boast of our Masonic Park Complex and our new Freemason s Hall. Taking time to reflect back on our past I am sure you will then agree with me that it makes one proud to say I am a member of the Masonic Fraternity I am a Mason. In closing, enjoy the summer with family and friends - have a safe journey wherever your travels take you. I look forward to see you back in the Lodge come September. MOST WORSHIPFUL GRAND MASTER MWB JOHN A. PEYTON John A. Peyton PAGE 2

4 The formation of the Scottish Jurisdiction In Newfoundland with an English Connection In 1862 an attempt was made to establish a Lodge under the Scottish jurisdiction. An application was made and a charter was issued. It was to be named Lodge St. Andrew No.431, however no consecration took place. After the untimely death of Rt. Worshipful Bro Patrick Tasker it was decided by the membership of both Saint John's Lodge and Avalon Lodge to support a Scottish Lodge in the honor of the departed the Provincial Deputy District Grand Master On May 6, 1866 the Grand Lodge of Scotland issued a warrant to form Lodge Tasker No. 454, so named after Patrick Tasker our first Provincial District Deputy Grand Master. The consecration took place on November 22, 1866 by Worshipful Bro. James S. Clift, The Provincial District Deputy Grand Master of Newfoundland, Provincial Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia, United Grand Lodge Of England. As a result of the Provincial Grand Master, Rt. Worshipful Bro. Alexander Keith, was unable to attend the ceremony as planned, The Provincial District Deputy Grand Master of Newfoundland was assisted by Worshipful. Bro. N. S. Stabb, a Past Master of Saint Johns Lodge. Bro. W. T. Parsons was installed as Rt. Worshipful Master in the newly formed Lodge Tasker, Scottish Constitution. The organization assists young men in growing into responsible adults with good moral character while providing them a place to go, have fun, companionship, be accepted by peers and develop solid values. DeMolay is not only teaching young people about the working tools of life it is serving as the cornerstone of our next generation.. Several Chapters of DeMolay have existed in Nova Scotia but never within our province A decline occurred in Nova Scotia but today they are presently working to re-activate the Order and open its doors to young. men in their province. 5 History Of Freemasonry in Newfoundland Rt. Worshipful Brother Sir William V. Whiteway Although he was a dynamic Newfoundlander in as many aspects of his life both as a Politician, as well as a Freemason, Sir William V. Whiteway was born April 1, 1828 in Buckyett near Totnes, Devon England, He arrived in Newfoundland in 1843 at age 15 as a mercantile apprentice. However after a short period of time he decided to study Law. In 1852 he was called to the Bar in Newfoundland and in 1858 he began his political career which spanned thirty years. In 1862 he married his first wife, Mary. In 1865 he was appointed Speaker of the House of Assembly. In 1868 his first wife Mary passed away. In 1872 he married his second wife Catherine. In 1874 he was appointed Solicitor General and in 1878 he became Prime Minister of Newfoundland and served for 16 years. He was the first Newfoundlander to be made a member of the Imperial Privy Council as result of his work in our province, then known as the colony of Newfoundland, something for which he was knighted by the King of England FREEMASONRY In 1849 St. John s Lodge was re-established which revitalized masonry in Newfoundland. In the beginning there were many prominent members initiated in this new Lodge, many of which would have influence in the growth of the fraternity within the colony. Sir William Whiteway was initiated in Saint John s Lodge in 1850 according to the records, and would serve the fraternity for 59 years. His first office was Inner Guard in 1851, two years later in 1854, he was appointed Senior Warden when Patrick Tasker was serving as Worshipful Master for the first time. In 1859 he was installed as the first Worshipful Master of the Newly established Avalon Lodge No later renumbered 776, today number 2. He served as the Master of Avalon for three separate terms. In May 1871 the District Grand Lodge of Newfoundland was formed and he was appointed the first Deputy District Grand Master of the New District by Rt. Wor Bro. James Shannon Clift, our first District Grand Master. In 1878 he was appointed as the District Grand Master of Newfoundland by the United Grand Lodge of England, an office he would hold and serve for 33 years. He laid the corner stone and witnessed the construction of the first Masonic Temple and the great fire that would destroy it. He laid the corner stone for the second temple on Cathedral St. History shows that he left a wonderful legacy in his public as well as his Masonic career. His last Masonic meeting he was in his Mother Lodge on Dec 28th 1907, the Installation meeting of W.J. Edgar the youngest Master installed in the Saint John s Lodge up to that period. He laid down his working tools on June 24th 1908 and laid to rest in the Anglican Cemetery on Forest Rd. St. John s. 6 History of The Whiteway Memorial Tablet It was on July a committee was appointed to decide "what in the opinion would be the most desirable manner to perpetuating the memory of the late District Grand Master, Sir William V Whiteway who had presided over the lodge with such honor to the craft, distinction to himself and profit to the brethren" The Committee headed by J.R. Bennett, the then acting District Grand Junior Warden, reported the following January 28th that it recommended placing a stain glass window in the church of England Cathedral. The cost would be $ Saint John's Lodge and Avalon Lodge did not agree with the proposal. This started the discussion all over again and it was not until March that an announcement was made of an agreement to erect a bronze memorial tablet in the Temple. By that time $ had been collected to pay for it. January was the date set for the unveiling. On the evening of the ceremony approximately 200 Masons and 150 Ladies assembled in the Temple. Among them was a full delegation of Officers of the Scottish District Grand Lodge of Newfoundland including their District Grand Master Bro C. R. Duder. The District Grand Master of Newfoundland Rt. Wor Bro James A. Clift, opened the proceedings with address in which he paid tribute to Whiteway. " The man whose memory we now desire to perpetuate" he said " has set us such an example in the practice of Freemasonry and its principles that we too, if we follow in his footsteps may also earn, as he has earned the distinction of being called a Good Mason". LODGE ETIQUETTE Did you know all Lodge communications should to go through the Lodge secretary? He has the tools and methods to ensure all bases are covered. This includes all notifications within as well as outside the membership of the Lodge. With the introduction of media such as there has been a tendency for some Lodge Masters to go directly to the individual rather than the utilization of the Secretary s Office. This is not proper etiquette as often it creates missing pieces where there is no trace or record kept of the communication. The effective Master utilizes the Officers for individual roles and responsibilities to ensure an efficiently run Lodge. PAGE 5

8 REPORT FROM BOARD OF GENERAL PURPOSES GRAND LODGE Brethren, as Deputy Grand Master and President of the Board of General Purposes I extend fraternal greetings and best wishes for a warm and safe summer and trust that when lodge meetings continue in the fall that your lodges will be filled with energy & fellowship as we all continue to do the work of our honourable institution in this great province. Rt. Wor Bro. Gerald W. Budden Deputy Grand Master Since our Annual Communication in St. John's October 2010 the Board of General Purposes has been quite busy in carrying out its duties as the administrative body of Grand Lodge. There has been open & frank discussions on all matters that effect our association & you should be pleased to learn that such discussions were conducted in a business like manner and although there is often a honest difference of opinions on items discussed by the board before a final decision is made, we realize this is what makes our Grand Lodge so unique, this is why we started a Grand Lodge in the first place, so that we can weight all sides of the arguments presented and than make a informed decision on a course of action to be taken or on a recommendation. One such course of action is amendments, updates, and revisions to our present constitution. This has been a time laboured process and involved hundreds of hours by the Constitutional Committee. It also involved the Grand Master, Deputy Grand Master, Grand Secretary, & Grand Registrar travelling to the various districts to present those proposed changes at district meetings and receive input and suggestions. I am happy that all districts did have a opportunity to voice any concerns that they did have and certain changes were addressed by the committee as a result of input by the districts. In conclusion, I extend my sincere thanks to the Grand Registrar, the constitutional committee, the Board of General Purposes, all Districts regarding this matter and trust that our Annual Communication in Gander will see to the successful implementation of this administrative process regarding constitutional update and revision. 9 DISTRICT GRAND MASTER THE PENINSULAS The days are getting longer and as spring turns into summer I am pleased to say that I have had the opportunity to officially visit all the Lodges in Peninsulas District #4 and advise that Masonry is alive & well in this area. Two Lodges have already recessed for the summer months and two others will do the same within the next month. Landfall Lodge and Union Lodge have yet to have their installations and they are scheduled for June 24 th & 25 th respectively at Landfall Lodge. The premises normally utilized by Union Lodge is undergoing some renovations and is not currently suited for meetings and installation. As a result both lodges will use the premises of Landfall Lodge with a roast beef dinner to follow on the 25 th. It is good to see new members being brought into various lodges and I note that the candidates are of a more mature age. This shows that the idea has been there for some time however with the raising of a family & other household commitments one cannot always get involved in the extra curricular activities we would like to. Now that time permits, these individuals are taking advantage of the situation and no doubt have a lot to share with us. The Grand Lodge data base has been received and there appears to be the need for some updated information. Over the summer months I will take it upon myself to help fill in some of the blanks. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all a happy, safe summer & look forward to your return in the fall. Fraternally E.A. Ryzuk RWB Elmur Ryzuk District Grand Master DISTRICT GRAND MASTER- AVALON Greetings from Avalon District The past three months have been quite busy with most Lodges having new brethren in various stages of degree work..these degrees have been conferred in an excellent manner and the Lodges are to be commended for their efforts. During this period a large number of Installations occur in the district not only of the GLNL but those of our sister constitution. Attendance has been good and the brethren are to be thanked for their continued support. As we approach the summer recess may blue skies, brilliant sunshine and warm temperatures prevail. Have a safe and enjoyable summer. RWB Donald Lambert District Grand Master Sincerely & Fraternally Don Lambert Support Freemasonry become an active member in your Lodge PAGE 8

10 DISTRICT GRAND MASTER - CENTRAL RWB Derek Webster District Grand Master Central My old bones are so grateful, as we finally feel the warmth air of summer approach. "Installation Season" is now over in Central District and a most enjoyable and successful one it was. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Grand Master, Deputy Grand Master, Grand Secretary and Grand Senior Warden for their visitations during that time. The brethren of our region were most grateful to be able to extend their hospitality and courtesies to our Grand Lodge leaders. Visitations are such a vital component to our success and fulfilment as Masons. There is no greater Masonic joy, for me, than to be able to shake the fraternal hand of a Brother from another Lodge within our jurisdiction or from without, and enjoy their fellowship. Let's do more of it! Congratulations to Botwood Lodge # 9, as they get ready to celebrate their 100th Anniversary and I take the liberty to invite all masons to attend the Re-dedication Ceremony on June 18th at noon, in Botwood, when our Grand Master and his Grand Lodge Delegation will conduct that service. On behalf of your District Officers, I wish all brethren and their families a safe and enjoyable summer and look forward to seeing many of you, on the high seas, aboard " Hi Time". 11 DISTRICT GRAND MASTER - WESTERN Greetings Western District had its 13th annual district meeting hosted by Notre Dame Lodge in Springdale. 18 brethren from district lodges attended. Reports submitted by all lodges show that our district is very active and doing well. We were pleased to have the GM and GL Officers attend and give a presentation on the proposed Constitutional changes. Annual lobster dinners for ladies night were hosted by Westgate Lodge and Corner Brook lodge. The DGM and his lady were happy to attend both. On June 7 the DGM will be in Port aux Basques making his last official visit for the year to Cabot Lodge. As well, Cabot Lodge will be hosting our annual district dinner on the same day. A good turn out of brethren and ladies is hoped for. This will conclude the District activities until after the summer break RWB Scott Ledrew District Grand Master M. Scott Ledrew District Grand Master DISTRICT GRAND MASTER - LABRADOR It is my pleasure to submit an up to date report on the Big Land district. Polaris Lodge continues to maintain strong fraternal relations with its member brethren and in addition can be relied upon to provide a warm greeting to visitors. There is the usual amount of degree work, in fact the brethren are preparing to confer, at the June meeting, the first degree on two candidates who recently were balloted on. This will indeed be a busy meeting as it will be our last until we meet in the Fall. I had the privilege of making my first official visit to the lodge, as District Grand Master, at their May meeting and was afforded a very warm fraternal welcome. It was indeed an enjoyable evening. Masons # 17 has had a relatively busy Spring and continues to enjoy very favourable reviews as a result of the functions that are catered to by the brethren and their ladies who basically form the working group. Their continued efforts are worthy of note. The Lake Melville Shrine Club is also enjoying a good year and financial success with its weekly T.V. bingo. The club has a very good relationship with the community. That s about the extent of the report for this issue. May I take this opportunity to wish all an enjoyable summer season. 12 FROM THE EDITOR S DESK Brethren As we all know change is how we grow. This edition of Fraternal Tidings has taken a new look and I hope it is a refreshing approach, one that you, our membership will agree is a positive direction, moving in a magazine format. The present plan will have two editions, one in the late spring and one in the fall before Christmas. I have been receiving feedback from our own as well as other jurisdictions, even from across the ocean. So it appears we have a broad audience which are tuning into our Grand Lodge and its work as Freemasons. I have always said being a small Jurisdictions provides us opportunities of which our bigger brothers can avail. With that being said, I hope you enjoy this latest edition. As the summer has arrived and our Masonic year is pretty much completed, activities within the Lodges are now slowing down. As your Editor I would to thank you for your continued support of this publication in sharing what's going on in your Lodge as well as District. As you all know our next big event is the Grand Lodge Annual Communication, at which I hope to see many of you during this annual event. Our next news magazine is scheduled for the fall. I would like see more information from all the Lodges within our Jurisdiction. As your editor, and on behalf of my wife Wanda, I wish you all a fun-filled and safe summer. 15 WORSHIPFUL MASTER" IS A RANK By WB Barry Thom Which is correct, Worshipful Master, or Worshipful Sir? Worshipful Master is an official title, as is, Grand Master. Being elected or appointed to a Masonic office can convey a particular rank upon that individual. That rank can bring with it a title which is associated with that rank. The title signifies that individual s office. The title, Worshipful Sir, applies to everyone who has ever been installed as a Worshipful Master, (and not achieved a higher office). So there can be several Worshipful Sirs in a Lodge, but there is only ONE Worshipful Master. The Master of a Lodge is therefore entitled to be and should be addressed by his proper title at all times, unless otherwise called for in our rituals and ceremonies. He is the Worshipful MASTER. WANTED DISTRICT REPORTERS NEEDED FOR FRATERNAL TIDINGS WE NEED ARTICLES FOR THIS NEWSLETTER. ALL DISTRICTS PLEASE CONTACT GLNFLD@NF.SYMPATICO.CA So Mote It Be The phrase So mote it be is used by Masons as a response at the end of a prayer. It comes from an Old English phrase that simply means so may it be, and has been used in Masonic documents since its earliest beginnings. Masons use it as a affirmation of a prayer as a response to amen, a word of similar meaning. Page 14
