1 FRATERNAL TIDINGS GRAND LODGE OF NEWFOUNDLAND & LABRADOR OF ANCEINT FREE AND ACCEPTED MASONS DECEMBER 2010 EDITOR: RWB DANIEL R. FRAMPTON GREETINGS FROM OUR GRAND MASTER Brethren, This is my first message as Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Newfoundland and Labrador and I extend my sincerest thanks to all of you for making the 13 th Annual Communications such an enjoyable, successful and memorable event. We should all be proud of our accomplishments - We came together as one, worked together as one and enjoyed each others company. Is this not what Masonry is all about? Most certainly. I have chosen for my theme Foresight thru Reflections. In my address to the gathering at the 13 th Annual Communications you will recall that I indicated that we must look back at our accomplishments and also those areas where we need to focus more attention if we are to build for the future. If we do so, it is my firm belief that we will be the better for it. Brethren, reflecting back on our past enlightens us on how we advanced to where we are today and now looking back, we must chart our course for the future. The Past Grand Masters lead the way to where we are now so let s continue on that path. Building along the way for a brighter future. In closing, the Festive Season is fast approaching and once again we will soon find ourselves enmeshed in the Holiday Season, that very special time of year when we join with our loved ones in sharing centuries-old traditions. As we celebrate in our individual ways, I would ask that you take a moment to remember the less fortunate among us and take the opportunity to practice that virtue we all profess to admire Charity. As some of you have sons, daughters or relatives in the Armed Forces serving our Country overseas, as we do, give thought to them and their families and may the G.A.O.T.U guide them to a safe journey home. From our house to yours, both Lillian and I extend our best wishes for a blessed Christmas and a happy, prosperous and healthy New Year. May Peace be your gift at Christmas and your blessing all year through. John Peyton LODGE OF THE YEAR MOST WORSHIPFUL GRAND MASTER MWB JOHN A. 7 FRATERNAL TIDINGS COFFEE FOR THE TROOPS Ontario Freemasons donate Tim Horton's cards for our troops in Afghanistan NOVEMBER 11, REMEMBRANCE DAY Provincial War Memorial WREATH LAYING CEREMONY BY OUR GRAND LODGE The Holy Saints John PAGE 7 John, meaning "Jehovah has been gracious" in Hebrew, is the name of the two great patrons of Masonry, St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist. The feast days for the Holy Saints John were established around the solstices, traditional festival dates for several ancient deities. June 24, about the time of the summer solstice, was selected to honor St. John the Baptist. December 27, about the time of the winter solstice, was set to honor St. John the Evangelist. Exactly how these dates were selected? by the church, stonemasons guilds, or other? is not known, nor, of course, was either saint a Freemason. After spending time in the desert in prayer and meditation, John the Baptist began a ministry which preached reformation. Reformers today generally speak of reforming institutions or society. John the Baptist preached reformation of the individual, thereby reforming society one person at a time. As a sign of new life, initiates of this philosophy were given a ritual bath or baptism. John the Baptist preceded and baptized Jesus. In the middle of a desert, purification by cooling water must have held a special significance. This ceremony, combined with a commitment to change one's life, had to be personally and spiritually uplifting. We know John the Evangelist from his writings, one Gospel and three letters. His message is that to know and love God is to obey His law, that the essential mark of grace is brotherly love, and that the ideal life is to live in a community or fellowship with others of like mind and spirit. In short, God is love, and he who dwells in love, dwells in God, and God in him. The assignment of the feast of St. John the Evangelist on the winter solstice is also symbolically interesting since that day has the least amount of sunlight, but is followed by increasingly longer days of light. The date represents a rebirth, seasonal and personal, following long darkness. Since the goal of Freemasonry is to make good men better, its two great patrons are, appropriately, the Holy Saints John, but it is also intriguing that the Fraternity selected them rather than St. Thomas, who is generally considered the patron saint of architects and builders.
8 FRATERNAL TIDINGS PAGE 8 Masonic Park Tenant Appreciation Day On Friday August the Board of Directors of Masonic Park held their Tenant Appreciation day by inviting all Masonic Park residents to a BBQ at Freemasons Hall. This was also the 30Th. anniversary of the Park's formation and two Anniversary cakes were there to mark the occasion. The event began at noon with a tremendous turnout of residents, who enjoyed the fun and fellowship. Picture 1: The Park Seniors enjoy the Event Picture 2 BBQ L-R, Bro Owen Devereaux, MWB. Understanding the Work Although we are a relatively small Grand Lodge we do have five Districts with a District Grand Master The Office of District Grand Master is a key component to our Grand Lodge. The Officers elected to these offices are your representative as well as the voice within our Grand lodge. They report directly to our Grand Master on all issues within your District. As members of the Board of General Purposes they vote on issues on your behalf. Their role is very important to your District as they have responsibilities which vary from Education to Ceremony, they also provide administration within the District. They are responsible to conduct District Meetings to support your Lodges and their membership. Its is important that these Officers receive support of the membership to be effective for our Grand Lodge IN PHOTO FROM LEFT TO RIGHT MWB J. PEYTON GRAND MASTER, RWB G.
