2 Appendx Ths Appendx' contans a roster 01 the Kentuckans who served as offcers n the war wth Mexco, both n the Regular Army and the Volunteer Army. t s not clamed that the roster s complete, but t s beleved to be the most complete one that has ever been publshed. t contans, so far as t has been possble to get the nformaton, the names of offcers who were born n Kentucky and apponted from Kentucky; of.offcers who were born n Kentucky and apponted from other States; and: of offcers who were apponted from Kentucky, but were born elsewhere. General Don Carlos Buell was born n Oho and was apponted to the army from ndana; and, although he was a ctzen of Kentucky for many years, and ded, there, he dd not settle n the State untl long after the close of the Mexcan War. Hs s the only case of the knd on ths roster. f t s probably now mpossble to get anythng lke a complete roster of natve-born Kentuckans who were offcers of volunteers n the Mexcan War from other States. Perhaps half of those from Mssour were born n Kentucky, as were a great many of those from lnos and Texas, and, n a lesser degree, those from Arkansas, Tennessee, ndana and Msssspp. 52 Where brevets. were conferred on offcers of the Regular Army, the fact s ndcated n the roster n parenthess after the offcer's name. For nstance, "Captan John B. Grayson, Commssary of Subsstence (Major and Leutenant-Colonel, Contreras, Churubusco, and Chapultepec)," ndcates that Captan Grayson was brevetted Major for gallant and' dstngushed conduct n one of those battles, and Leutenant-Colonel for smlar conduct n the others. Many of the offcers on ths roster subsequently served n the Unon or the Confederate armes n the Cvl War. Where ths was the case, the fact s ndcated, together wth the rank the offcer held n the later servce. Where the fact s known, the date of the death of offcers s also gven. 53
