1 CELEBRATION Chatfield United Methodist Church 150 th Anniversary Volume 4 Issue 6 June/July 2006 A monthly publication of the Chatfield United Methodist Church also see at The first Sunday in June is Pentecost. Pentecost is the day we celebrate the descending of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles so that they could go forth proclaiming the Word of the Risen Lord. You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city until you are clothed with the power from on high. When that Spirit descended upon the disciples they were able to go, not under their own power, but from the power given them by God. The Holy Spirit has continued to be an important part of our lives as we, too, witness for Jesus Christ. We must not go out on our own, thinking that we can do great things by ourselves. We need to allow the Holy Spirit of God to direct our lives. Jesus told the disciples NOT to venture forth until the Holy Spirit had been sent to them. We, too, should NOT venture out until we have allowed that same Holy Spirit of God to come and be a part of our lives. That is, to lead us, to walk beside us and to be behind us in all that we do. Then and only then will we do God s work and not just our own. May our lives be filled with the Holy Spirit. May our days be spent searching out God s will for our lives. This is all wrapped up in trusting our Lord Jesus and allowing the Holy Spirit to dwell in us. It does lead us to the truth and the truth will always set us free. We are then truly free to be God s children. We are approaching the half way mark in the Celebration of our 150 th. On June 10 th we will have the 3 rd Annual Picnic at Chester Woods as part of our Celebration. There is a whole page telling us of that adventure in this newsletter. Then on July 22 nd we have an All Community Hog Roast with a Carnival and Bingo, Video of our History, and ending with an evening s entertainment. This also has a whole page telling us what to expect that day. We have had some wonderful Celebrations so far: January The Old Time Service February Community Fish Fry March The Mother/Daughter Banquet April The Father/Son Banquet The Pictorial Directories have arrived and been distributed as a part of the 150 th. The Keepsake Crocks and Plates have arrived and are being distributed to those who have purchased them. We still have Crocks and Plates for sale. There are around 60 Crocks and 20 Plates that will be for sale during our next six months. One thing to note during the July 22 nd Celebration, three Crocks will be auctioned off around 6:30 PM. They are numbered Crocks 7, 8, 9!!! 6:30 PM is the time between the meal, carnival, bingo, history and the evenings entertainment. This should be a fun event as well. It will be a busy summer and that is why my family and I are taking some time off during June. We will be gone from June 14 to July 2. Then we intend to settle in for the summer activities which include Western Days food stand and VBS right after Western Days. Summer worship is at 9 AM with Coffee Fellowship at 10 AM starting June 4. Worship is a little more informal and the liturgy varies throughout the summer. So, I invite you to come and bring a friend as we continue to worship the Lord our God in various ways. Please remember the needs of the church financially during the summer. Bill Brueck s report brings us up to date and tells us to remember that summer can be a lower giving time. Let s not let that happen. We thank you very much for being a responsible and loving steward to your church. Donations can be sent directly to the church or to the financial secretary Juanita Haare. Thanks again and have a very good summer!!! Pastor Jack

6 YOUTH GROUP We are having youth events for the summer!! JUNE - Late June there will be an activity for the whole youth group. We are trying to get your opinion on the event before planning any further. JULY There will be two events one early in July which you will choose at the June event, and one is the Hog Roast-Carnival celebration on July 22. We need the youth to run the carnival and yet give you time to play the games as well. Therefore, there will be a set up time between 2 pm and 3 pm. Then shifts, (3:00-4:30 & 4:30 6:00 pm). Again this would allow you to play the games, too. Then we will need to clean the area between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm. You are getting a letter on this. AUGUST There will be two events We need your participation during Western Days at the Food Stand and to work the parade on the float. The second event will be after that just before school--maybe tubing on the river!! Stay tuned and be involved!!! Rick Budahn for the 150 th Anniversary sign; to all who helped on our all church cleaning day ; to those who painted the walls in the fellowship hall; to Greg Forbes, Scott Ferguson, Dale & Clayton Wright and Mike Smith for helping with the garage preparation; and a BIG Thank You to Sunday School teachers, Doreen Amy, Karen Budahn, Jennifer Lange-Collett, Jeanne Ferguson, Michelle Folken, Kelly Gillespie, Sherry Hareldson and Deanna Wright. Your commitment to this program is greatly appreciated. THANKS to Don & Marge Simpson for taking good care of the church as our janitors. Don has been working as our janitor for over 10 years and Marge joined him about 6 years ago. They not only cleaned the church weekly, but helped set up the fellowship hall for many events like funerals, Father-Son and Mother-Daughter banquets, weddings, anniversaries and so on. We thank them for this ministry to their church. They decided last fall they needed to retire sometime this year. As the Simpsons retire from being janitors we would like to say our new janitors are Crystal Narveson and Michael Budahn. We are thankful that these two young people stepped up to the challenge. We welcome them as they start this needed ministry to their church. Thanks to Michael Budahn for his great presentation on Iraq during the service on May 21. It was great to hear his story and he did a fine job answering your questions. THANKS, Mike!! PAGE 7 CELEBRATION VOLUME 4 ISSUE 6

7 CHATFIELD UNITED METHODIST CHURCH During this time the name of the church was changed from Chatfield Episcopal Church to Chatfield United Methodist Church. It was also during this time that only three pastor s were appointed : George Jacobus (1 year) Franklin Christenson (4 years) Clinton Becker (10 Years) In 1965 there was a D.V.B.S. (Daily Vacation Bible School) that was held June 7-11 from 9AM to 2:30 PM. It is interesting to note that also during this time Chatfield was a two point charge with Fountain. It became necessary during this year that Lanesboro be added for one year. That made for a three point charge which meant it was necessary for someone to help Pastor Quam with the morning services. Needless to say Pastor Quam was quite busy during that year. Church Night at the County Fair was also quite a deal. Many pastors from the area participated in the evening service at the fairgrounds. In 1965 between 1,500 and 2,000 people were expected to show up for the evening service. I did not see a follow up article to say just how many did come. But even 1,000 or more would have been quite a sight. A sidelight from church events was also the building of a brand new swimming pool for the city of Chatfield. It opened late that summer. It was in 1965 that a commitment to build near the old church site was made and the lots on the hill were purchased for a total price of $1,600. Also during this time a new church was proposed. From the drawings and model it was a church to be built on one level with sanctuary, fellowship hall, classrooms, kitchen and study. For whatever reason that church proposal did not get approved and it would be 10 years before this church would be built. During that time George Jacobus became pastor for one year. Then in 1967 Franklin Christenson was appointed to now the Chatfield-Fountain Parish. The seeds for a new church had been planted but again it would take 10 years before this building would be approved in During this 15 year period many programs would continue like the Father/Son Banquet which was now making history due to it longevity. The Women s organizations were very active as was the Men s organization. The Youth were very active as well and there was an active Sunday School. The church needed to expand and it became necessary to envision a new facility on the hill. The white frame church has served well over the years and had seen many a baptism, wedding, funeral, potluck and dinners served. As well many Sunday morning worship services and Sunday evening services had taken place. Many people had come to the communion rail for Holy Communion over the years and many souls had been won to Christ!! The white frame church had been the focus of worship for over 75 years, but a new beginning was opening up as the congregation made its way up the hill to its new sanctuary and fellowship hall. Pastor Clinton Becker would be the shepherd during the process. He came in 1971 and helped prepare the way for new ministry and the building of the church. He was able to stay as pastor until This is somewhat different for a pastor that goes through a building process with a church usually leaves shortly after the church is built. I am not sure of all the dynamics of this, but a lot of energy is expended during the process of planning and building. The new building would be consecrated on January 23, 1977 and was conducted by Bishop Wayne Clymer. The building committee chairperson Paul Denny presented this new building to the Glory of God and to the service of all people. Recognition was given to the Architectural Firm (Ralph Shimmer), the General Contractor (Peter Nelson), the Electrical Contractor (Nietz Electric), Plumbing & Heating Contractor (Larry Hovey. Pews (Ossit Church Furniture) and Carpet (Riley). And now began a new history of baptisms, funerals, weddings, potlucks, dinners, Christmas Programs and many others activities of the new Chatfield United Methodist Church. 8 Capital Improvement Campaign has begun. We wish to thank those who have made a Commitment to the Capital Improvement Project. To date we have received in cash and commitments the amount of $10,662.00!! This means we have almost 25% of our goal of $43,000. To those who have given to the project we will be sending a letter of thank you soon. You may give to the project at any time, during church offering, at the church office, or directly to the financial secretary, Juanita Haare. Please return the Commitment Card with your donation or commitment. Thank you for your cooperation. Both projects are moving along. In the church communication, communication and communication are three important ingredients and we apologize to those who feel we did not do enough of that in this process. Seeing the prices of materials rising fast we made the decision to do the projects now. Since we have been working on a solution to both projects for almost four years, we may have taken it for granted that people knew we were going to do these projects. We are only trying to do the best for our church and pray you will understand that a lot of time and thought went into both projects on your behalf before taking them to the Ad/Council. They were discussed there as well over the years and this seemed to be the proper time to go forward with them. We are sorry if this information missed you. Board of Trustees Chatfield United Methodist Church THANKS continued -To Steve Goldsmith for putting up the sign that Richard Budahn made for our 150 th, and to Mike Smith who put the lights on it so we can see it better in the evening. -To Bill Collett for putting the reinforcement bars in the garage flooring making it ready to pour the foundation. -To all those who donated items for the end of the year Bingo Party for our church school. -To all the committees who are preparing for the two events coming up on June 10 th (Chester Woods picnic) and July 22 (Hog Roast-Carnival celebration). It takes a lot of effort to put on these programs and we appreciate your commitment to making them meaningful events!!!
