CEMETERY GUIDE for ancestors of Zadoc John Piety ( ) and Ora Frances (Watson) Piety ( ) This Cemetery Guide discloses certain information on the Vigo and Knox County Indiana burials for ancestors of Zadoc John Piety and his wife Ora Frances (Watson) Piety. It was produced in anticipation of an October 8, 2011 family reunion, to be hosted by Dennis and Sharon Piety at their Pimento Indiana home. Because this Guide s primary goal is to facilitate visits by interested family members to their ancestors grave sites, not all available information is presented here. This document only contains basic directions to the cemeteries and basic information on the ancestor, tombstone images, and GPS coordinates of each tombstone. Refer to for additional details and scanned images of birth certificates, marriage bonds and licenses, U.S. Census images, military pension applications, death certificates, wills and probate records, pictures, and more. Please let me know if you have any questions about the information presented herein. Any corrections or additional information is also sincerely appreciated. 6 Mariah Creek Christian Church Cemetery, Oaktown, Knox Co., IN This Cemetery includes the oldest Piety ancestors of Zadoc to be buried in Indiana. It is located about 35 miles southeast of Prairie Creek. From Prairie Creek, take IN St. Rd. 246 (159 th Drive) east about 6 miles and turn south (right) onto US 41. After 29 miles (on the northeast corner of Oaktown), turn east (left) onto Freelandville Road. Go 2.3 miles on Freelandville Road and turn south (right) on County Road 400 E (Risley Road). After another 2.3 miles on 400 E, turn east (right) on E. Oaktown Road. After about ½ mile, Oaktown Road curves southeast. About 1 mile after the curve, turn west (right) on E. Pepmeier Road. The entrance to the Mariah (Maria) Creek Christian Church is on the north (right) side of the road, and the Cemetery is behind the church building. Thomas Piety Latitude and Longitude Mary F. (Duncan) Piety Latitude and Longitude Thomas and Mary are connected to Zadoc, as follows: Thomas Piety and Mary F. (Duncan) Piety - GrGrGrandparents James Duncan Piety and Eleanor (Harned) Piety - GrGrandparents Thomas Piety and Emily (Thomas) Piety - Grandparents John D. Early Piety and Mary Phedora (Trueblood) Piety - Parents Zadoc John Piety Thomas Piety was son of British Captain Austin Piety and Sarah Polk. There is conflicting information regarding his birth. Possible dates 1763 (plaque under tombstone in honor of Revolutionary War service) and Dec 1770 (tombstone). Thomas listing in the 1830 Census for Knox Co IN included one free male in the household between 50 and 60 years old, which lends most credence to the 1770 tombstone birth year. James Polke wrote in A Historical and Biographical Sketch of a Pioneer Life 1884, Austin Piety with his command was ordered to Kaskaskia, on the Mississippi River in 1770 by the British Authorities. He descended down the Ohio River with his wife and troops under his command, as far as the falls of the Ohio River (Louisville) and there made a short stay in order to lay in a supply of buffalo and other meat; thence down the river to its mouth (now Cairo IL) and from thence up to their destination, the American Bottom on the east side of the Mississippi River opposite St. Louis (Ft. Kaskaskia is down river, south of St. Louis), and during their stay, Thomas Piety was born in The party returned to Ft. Pitt and during the Revolutionary War Austin Piety returned to England and from thence never returned, leaving his wife, Sarah Polk Piety, and four children in America. Mary Polly Duncan was born 25 Nov 1774 in Maryland to James Duncan, who moved his family in her youth to Nelson Co. KY. The marriage bond for Thomas Piety and Mary Duncan, signed by Thomas Piety, was dated 26 Jul Because Mary was not yet 18 years old in the Summer of 1792, her father James Duncan s permission was required for the marriage license to be issued. They were married 07 Aug 1792 at the Nelson Co. KY home of James Duncan, Mary s father, by Joshua Carman. Mary described Joshua Carmen as a creditable Baptist preacher. Page 4

Mariah Creek Christian Church Cemetery, Oaktown, Knox Co., IN Thomas Piety made application for military pension on January 1, 1834 in Knox Co. IN. He was eligible for the pension under Act of Congress dated April 25, 1808, but was unaware of the pension until the District s Congressional Representative John Ewing notified him in He was wounded during his military service at St. Clair s defeat in the November 1791 Indian War. For his service, he received a pension of $4 per month, beginning January He only collected his monthly $4 a little over one year, as he died on 17 May Thomas pension application stated, during the Revolutionary war and long after peace had been concluded with England, he served as a volunteer and a drafted militia man in different expeditions against the Indians. Served in that from Fort Pitt, now Pittsburg Pennsylvania, afterward from Kentucky, that he cannot precisely state his age is now apparently seventy years, he well knows by events in his memory that he has a distinct recollection of his various services as a volunteer, and as a drafted militia man under Col. J. Hardin, Col. Wilkinson and Col. Scott at different times from Kentucky against hostile Indians in the North West Territory. That he served in Capt Presley Gray s Company of Drafted men collected near the falls of Ohio then attached to Virginia and with said Company under the command of Col Oltham joined the Army of Gen. St. Clair near Fort Hamilton, that in the engaging with the Indians near Fort Recovery called St. Clair s defeat, he the said Piety while in the line of his duty was severely wounded by a musket or rifle shot and disabled in the thigh and hip joint as stated in the accompanying Certificate of two physicians and the affidavits of the Ensign of the Company Thomas Spencer and John Parker a Surgeon of the same which are hereunto annexed that he served for the time he was drafted until wounded as aforesaid that his mode of life since leaving the service has been that of a farmer. That he resided in the State of Kentucky in the County of Breckenridge, that for the last nineteen years he has resided in the County of Knox in the state of Indiana where he now resides at the taking of this testimony. John Parker, one of the supporting witnesses for Thomas Piety s pension application, stated he well remembered seeing said Piety laying or sitting wounded during the engagement and while yet on the battle ground that he and said Parker being himself wounded in the same battle was afterward in the same bed with said Piety and that they frequently examined the wounds of each other. Another witness, Thomas Spencer, affirmed his acquaintance with the said Thomas Piety since the year 1777 at which period they both resided in the vicinity of Fort Pitt now Pittsburg Pennsylvania, that the said Spencer removed to Jefferson County Kentucky in the year 1780 and said Piety also removed to the neighborhood of the State of Ohio in said County of State a few years afterwards, where their former acquaintance and intimacy was renewed, that a draft of Militia was made in said County in the year 1790 for men to go on an expedition against hostile Indians up the Wabash River under Major Hamtramck in which expedition said Piety served as a Sergeant in Capt. McHall s company, and he said Spencer served as a private in said Company. The expedition returned to the Falls after burning the Indian town near the mouth of the Vermillion and the Militia was there discharged. That he the said Spencer served in different expeditions sent from Kentucky in 1790 and 1791 and then under the command of Col J Hardin, Col. Wilkinson, and Col Scott always had the said Thomas Piety along with them. That he the said Spencer was in 1791 elected an Ensign in Capt. Presley Gray s company of drafted men which under General St. Clair s army with said Thomas Piety serving as a private and the company was attached to the command of Colonel Oldham in joining the main army near Fort Hamilton Ohio. That said Piety and this Deponent again became mates until the defeat of our Army near Fort Recovery known as St. Clair s Defeat in which our company suffered greatly. That said Thomas Piety was severely wounded in the thigh or groin, and when all were retreating in confusion he the said Spencer discovered said Piety to be utterly unable to travel, and a horseman being at hand, he said Spencer laid hold of the bridle and placed said Piety behind the rider in which manner the Page 5

Mariah Creek Christian Church Cemetery, Oaktown, Knox Co., IN wounded man was brought off the field and conveyed to Fort Washington from whence said Spencer and Piety proceeded by water to the Falls of Ohio. On 12 Aug 1844, Mary also made a declaration in court as part of her application for widow s pension payments for Thomas service. Mary believed she qualified for the widow s pension under the provisions of Pension Acts of Congress in 1838, 1843, and Her application was denied, possibly because the 1791 Indian War referenced in her application did not qualify as Revolutionary War service under those Acts. Entrance to Cemetery Thomas and Mary Piety are at the top of the small mound just right of center in the picture. Mary (Duncan) Piety and Thomas Piety, Sr. - Latitude Longitude Page 6

Lyken Cemetery, Prairie Creek, Vigo Co., IN Lyken Cemetery is about 2½ miles west of Prairie Creek. From Prairie Creek, go west on W. Middletown Road (#246) about 2 miles and turn right (north) on S. Battlerow Pl. The driveway (pictured here) is on the east (right) side of Battlerow Pl, about 0.4 miles north of Middletown Road. A locked gate prevents driving up the hill to the Cemetery (you can park there and walk), unless unlocked by the residents at the house across the road another 500 feet north. Lyken Cemetery contains the burials of Ora (Watson) Piety s ancestors: Sarah Jane (Watts) Paddock: Latitude Longitude Lewis Paddock: Latitude Longitude Internet sources also identify Lyken Cemetery as the burial site for Lewis wife Mary B (Shattuck) Paddock, although I have not located a tombstone for her at Lyken Cemetery. Their connection to Ora is as follows: William Paddock and Sarah Jane (Watts) Paddock GrGrGrandparents Lewis Paddock and Mary B. (Shattuck) Paddock - GrGrandparents Richard C. and Amanda Melvina (Paddock) Watson - Grandparents James Buchanan and Clara E. (Devol) Watson - Parents Ora Frances (Watson) Piety Sarah Jane (Watts) Paddock was born 1780 or 1781 and died 28 May 1849 in Prairie Creek Twp., Vigo Co., IN. She married William Paddock 07 Jan 1802 in Ohio. (For information about William, see New Harmony Cemetery.) After William Paddock s death 06 Nov 1838, Sarah lived with her son Lewis where she was for the 1840 Census of Prairie Creek, Vigo Co., IN. Sarah died 22 May Lewis Paddock was born 20 Jun 1804 (20 Aug 1804 according to tombstone) in Butler Co. Ohio to William and Sarah Jane (Watts) Paddock. Lewis first married Mary B. Shatuck on 13 Feb 1826 in Vigo Co. IN. Lewis and Mary had at least 4 children, the third of whom was Amanda Melvina Paddock (paternal grandmother of Ora). After Mary s November 1842 death, Lewis remarried Rebecca Ann Pogue on 23 Aug Lewis and Rebecca had at least seven additional children. Lewis died 31 Mar Rebecca died in 1886 and was buried next to Lewis. Page 7

Middleton Cemetery, Prairie Creek, Vigo Co., IN Middleton Cemetery is located on the north edge of Prairie Creek, the northeast corner of State Road 63 and West 157 th Drive. Middleton Cemetery is the burial site for five of ancestors of Zadoc: William and Margaret (Marshall) Thomas James Duncan and Eleanor Ellen (Harned) Piety Thomas Piety The connection of Zadoc to William and Margaret (Marshall) Thomas is as follows: William and Margaret (Marshall) Thomas GrGrGrandparents Elijah and Sarah (Pound) Thomas GrGrandparents Thomas and Emily (Thomas) Piety Grandparents John D. Early and Mary Phedora (Trueblood) Piety parents Zadoc John Piety The connection to Thomas Piety, James Duncan and Eleanor (Harned) Piety is as follows: James Duncan and Eleanor (Harned) Piety GrGrandparents Thomas and Emily (Thomas) Piety Grandparents John D. He and John Thomas were the sons of William Thomas and Emmet Evans, who immigrated on the Emmet. When his father was on his death bed, from the war with Great Britain, he sent a message to Emmet to educate our two boys. Margaret Maggie Marshall was also born about 1758 in VA. William and Margaret married about 1778 in VA. They moved to Lexington KY, thence to Ohio, and in 1811 moved to Indiana and lived in Fort Widner. In 1816, again moved, to Vigo Co. IN. Margaret Thomas died 01 Dec 1824 according to her tombstone. William Thomas died 28 Jan 1828 and was buried next to (north of) Margaret. William s gravesite is marked with his tombstone and a smaller Revolutionary War honorary stone inscribed with: Page 8

Wm. THOMAS 5 VA. MIL. REV. WAR On February 29, 1820, William Thomas appeared in the Indiana Circuit Court for Vigo County to request financial assistance under the Pension act of March 18, 1818, based on his service in the Revolutionary War. Jonathan Doty, presiding Judge of the first judicial circuit for the State of Indiana, heard the case. William Thomas stated on oath that he entered into the Army of the United States of America under continental establishment in February one thousand seven hundred and seventy six as a private soldier in Capt. Andrew Russell's Company, which company was at that time a part of the Virginia Line 5 th Regiment. That he served in that capacity for the term of four years under different officers and in different regiments. That he was discharged out of the third regiment by Colonel Fibenger. That his discharges is lost. That he was in the Battles of Brandywine and Germantown and at the taking of the Hessians at Trenton. That he was in sundry skirmishes during his term of service against the common enemy. That he is in reduced circumstances and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support. Two witnesses also attested to William s service, whereupon Judge Doty was convinced of his service and his reduced circumstances. William was granted pension for life at a rate of $8 per month, retroactively paid on September 4, 1820 to February 29, On May 1, 1820, the March 18, 1818 Pension Act was amended to require a certified inventory of the pensioner s estate and income, in order to substantiate continuing needs for financial assistance. Accordingly, on April 24, 1821, to substantiate his need of assistance of his country, William presented the Court with an inventory of his financial situation. He owned: 160 acres on which he owed $100 (the Court valued the land at $300) one horse worth $60 one 2-year old colt worth $25 2 cows worth $23 4 young cattle, two of which were 2 years old and 2 other yearlings, altogether worth $20 $20 owed to him from good hands James Duncan Piety was born 01 May 1796 in Hardin Co. KY to Thomas and Mary F. (Duncan) Piety. (For information on Thomas and Mary Piety, refer to Mariah Creek Christian Church Cemetery.) Page 9

Eleanor Harned was born 21 Mar 1802 to Enos and Deborah (Comstock) Harned of Hardin Co. KY. Because Eleanor was not yet 18 years old with James and Eleanor married on 29 Jun 1818, Enos Harned gave permission for them to marry and participated with James in signing the marrage bond that same day. For a marriage dowry, Eleanor s parents gave the newlyweds $500 and a 3-year old bay filly. They migrated to Indiana and purchased land just north of Pottersville, which later became known as Middletown or Prairie Creek. James donated the ground for the First Prairie Creek Baptist Church, as well as land for a portion of the town itself. James received at least three land grants in Vigo County: dated July 24, 1823 for 80 acres; August 11, 1823 for acres; and December 2, 1830 for 80 acres.. After Eleanor s death on 29 Mar 1838, James remarried Laurinda Thomas in Vigo County on 10 Oct James Piety was among the charter members of the Prairie Creek Church of Christ, organized 23 Sep 1851 under the eldership of James Blankenship and Joseph W. Wolfe. James died 18 Apr James, Eleanor, and Laurinda Piety share the same stone in a small plot on the north side of the hill north of the Middleton Cemetery (north of the fence). James Piety is inscribed on the west side of the stone, Eleanor is on the south side, and Laurinda is on the north side. The attached picture is taken looking northeast. Their joint tombstone is located at Latitude and Longitude Page 10

Thomas Piety was born to James Duncan and Eleanor (Harned) Piety 01 Sep 1823 in Vigo County IN. He married Emily Thomas on 22 Mar 1846, with the ceremony performed by Asa Frakes. Thomas helped on his father s farm and attended school for short periods during the winter, at a school built in Thomas and Emily Piety located on a farm near the Hauger Hill, which is one mile north of Middleton. On this farm was a log house which they used for their home until Thomas death. In addition to being a farmer, Thomas had a mill located on Prairie Creek, which flowed between his farm and his father s farm. Thomas had a habit of taking a swim in the mill-pond after his day s work, and on one of these occasions he contracted pneumonia and soon died on 11 Oct Thomas was buried in the same plot as his parents, north of the Middleton Cemetery fence. The attached tombstone picture was taken 20 Apr 2010, when the stone was laying on the ground at the western entrance to the family plot, about 10 feet west of the stone for James Duncan Piety, at Latitude and Longitude On earlier visits in 2005, 2006, and 2008, the stone was not in this location. Presumably Thomas was buried somewhere in the family plot. Page 11

New Harmony Cemetery, New Harmony, Vigo County, IN New Harmony Cemetery is located about 5½ miles north of Prairie Creek on St. Rd. 63, on the southwest corner of the intersection of West Harlan Drive and St. Rd. 63. Note: This New Harmony is not related to the historic New Harmony commune experiment in the early 1800 s near Evansville IN. New Harmony Cemetery is the burial site for at least one of Ora s ancestors: Ebenezer Paddock Sr. Latitude Longitude Keziah (Case) Paddock... probably is also buried at New Harmony William Paddock... (Ebenezer & Keziah s son) is also reported to have been buried at New Harmony Note: I have been unable to locate any tombstone for Keziah or William at the Cemetery. Ora descends from Ebenezer, as follows: Ebenezer Paddock Sr. and Keziah (Case) Paddock - GrGrGrGrandparents William Paddock and Sarah (Watts) Paddock GrGrGrandparents Lewis Paddock and Mary B. (Shattuck) Paddock - GrGrandparents Richard Clement Watson and Amanda Melvina (Paddock) Watson - Grandparents James Buchanan Watson and Clara E. (Devol) Watson - Parents Ora Frances (Watson) Piety Ebenezer Paddock was born at about 1740 in Maryland (some sources report Pennsylvania). His father was possibly Rueben Paddock, son of Judah and Alice (Alden) Paddock. But their son Reuben has not been documented to have lived past childhood. There was a Reuben Paddock, who married a Rebecca Hand. But, again, it is not certain that the two Reuben Paddock names are the same person. In addition, it has not been proven that Ora s ancestor Ebenezer Paddock was the son of this particular Reuben Paddock and Rebecca Hand. Because of the uncertainty of the lineage, the General Society of Mayflower Descendants no longer accepts our branch of the Paddock family for membership through Ebenezer to the Alden or Mullins families of Mayflower immigrants. In addition to being rejected for the Mayflower Society, Ebenezer s service in the Revolutionary War is now also rejected by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Technically, Ebenezer served before the Revolutionary War in King Dunmore s War, a 1774 territorial conflict between western Colonial Virginia and Shawnee and Mingo American Indian tribes. For his documented 142 days of service at Fort Pitt (now Pittsburg PA) under Captain David Rogers, in 1775 Ebenezer was paid 10 British pounds, 14 shillings, and 6 pence. That does not necessarily mean Ebenezer did NOT serve in the Revolutionary War. But his Revolutionary War service, if any, has not been satisfactorily proven to DAR. An honorary Revolutionary War veteran s stone is mounted on cement in a row with tombstones of other Paddock names. According to the stone, Ebenezer Paddock was born 1740 and died in The stone is in very good shape, making it unlikely that it was placed in However Ebenezer s original tombstone, if he ever had one, is not now at New Harmony Cemetery. If Ebenezer Paddock died in 1830, it was after the August 6, 1830 as of date for the 1830 census (when he was recorded as one of the Free White Males in Vigo County IN). In the 1830 census he was years old. Page 12

Second Prairie Creek Cemetery, Vigo County, IN The Second Prairie Creek Cemetery is located in Linton Township, about 3 miles east and 2.5 miles north of Prairie Creek, on the west side of S. Sullivan Place Road, where West Cutsinger Drive ends at Sullivan Place Road. The Cemetery is behind (west of) the small church building located on Sullivan Place Road, and is accessed by a driveway on the north side of the church building. The attached picture is looking west from Cutsinger Road. The driveway leads to the Cemetery on the left side of the picture. Second Prairie Creek Cemetery is the burial site for at least four ancestors of Zadoc: Thomas and Sarah (Kester) Pound joint stone at Latitude and Longitude Reuben Handy Beauchamp Latitude and Longitude Elizabeth (Kester) Beauchamp Latitude and Longitude Zadoc descends from these ancestors, as follows: Thomas Pound and Sarah (Kester) Pound - GrGrGrandparents Elijah Thomas and Sarah (Pound) Thomas - GrGrandparents Thomas Piety and Emily (Thomas) Piety - Grandparents John D. Early Piety and Mary Phedora (Trueblood) Piety - Parents Zadoc John Piety Thomas Pound was born 28 Jul 1767 to John and Sarah (Martin) Pound in NJ. He moved to Maryland with his parents. In 1786, he married Sarah Kester, daugher of William and Elizabeth (Lacock) Kester. Shortly after his marriage, his family migrated from near Cumberland, MD, to Nelson Co. KY, by way of the Ohio River on a flat boat, arriving there in April He lived in Nelson County for a few years and then moved to the adjoining Shelby Co., now Spencer Co., near Elk Creek. In 1801 he moved to Butler Co. OH on the Miami Bottoms, and in November 1816, to Vigo Co., Indiana, near Prairie Creek, where he resided until his death. Thomas was reportedly short and of dark complexion, while his wife was rather tall and fair, her hair being golden. Sarah Kester was born (probably in New Jersey) to William and Elizabeth (Lacock) Kester on 24 Jun 1767, only a few days before her husband Thomas Pound was born. Sarah died on 02 Feb 1848, only a few hours before her husband Thomas also passed away. They were both buried in the same grave at Second Prairie Creek Cemetery. Thomas and Sarah Pound (brother and sister) married Sarah and John Kester (sister and brother). This tombstone picture, taken in April 2010, shows the stone upright. Upon a 2006 visit to the Cemetery, the stone was lying on the ground. Obviously, someone reset the stone. So, Thank You to someone! Page 13

Reuben Handy Beauchamp was born 23 Oct 1803 in Lexington, Fayette Co. KY to Isaac and Hetty Hester (Beauchamp) Beauchamp. Elizabeth Kester was born 03 Jan 1802 in Spencer Co. Despite both Reuben and Elizabeth being over 18 years old when they married 22 Nov 1822, Isaac Beauchamp and John Kester, their fathers, respectively, gave permission to James Whitteker to grant the marriage license. The permission of the fathers was signed by each of them on 19 Nov Reuben and Elizabeth had at least six children, including the youngest Isaac, who was almost nine years old when Elizabeth died 01 May Probably to help care for the children, Reuben remarried 25 Jun 1846, less than two months after Elizabeth s death. Reuben s second wife was Drucilla (Hampton) Fergusson, widow of William Ferguson (whom Drucilla had married 20 Jul 1841). Reuben and Drucilla also had at least one additional child, a son, Nathan Beauchamp. Reuben Beuachamp died 02 Jun His broken stone lies about 50 feet north of his first wife Elizabeth s stone. 17 Trueblood Cemetery, Vigo County, IN Trueblood Cemetery is located about 3 miles northeast of Prairie Creek, in a field near S. Morgan Pl. Road. To get to the Cemetery from Prairie Creek, go north about 2 miles on St. Rd. 63 and turn east (right) on Evans Drive. Go east on Evans Dr about 1 mile to S. Morgan Place, where you turn north (left). Near S. Morgan Pl., there is a long driveway on the east (right) side of the road, to a house about 500 feet off the road in a field. That driveway provides the best access to the Cemetery. (You might want to introduce yourself to the residents at the house, if you park in their driveway.) In the attached picture, the red A is on Morgan Pl and the green arrow points to Trueblood Cemetery. The driveway into the field is just above the center of the picture. Trueblood Cemetery has about 40 burials with legible stones, including two ancestors of Zadoc. Benoni Trueblood Latitude and Longitude Bridget Ann (Gregory) Trueblood Latitude and Longitude Their connection to Zadoc is as follows: Benoni Trueblood and Bridget Ann (Gregory) Trueblood - GrGrandparents William Gregory Trueblood and Hetty Taylor (Beauchamp) Trueblood - Grandparents John D. Early Piety and Mary Phedora (Trueblood) Piety - Parents Zadoc John Piety Benoni Trueblood, sometimes spelled Benona, was born 26 Oct 1789 in Camdon Co. NC to Thomas and Elizabeth (Pendleton) Trueblood. Bridget Ann Gregory was born 1790 in NC to Joseph Gregory. I don t know Bridget s mother s name. Benoni and Bridget married in about Benoni was a Baptist minister, who moved his family to Vigo County in On 6 Jun 1828, he purchased land from David Cox, followed by another purchase from Isaac Cox on 12 Oct Honey Creek Predestinarian Baptist Church was organized in 1830 with fifteen members under Elders James Lee, Benoni Trueblood, and Asel Skaggs. A church building was erected in Page 15

Watson Cemetery, Vigo County, IN Watson Cemetery is located about 2 miles northwest of Prairie Creek. From Prairie Creek, go north on St. Rd. 63 about 1 mile and turn west (left) on W. French Dr. Go west about 1½ miles, then turn north (right) on S. Keegan Pl. The Cemetery is about 1,000 feet north of French Dr. on Keegan Pl. Watson Cemetery is the burial site for at least four of Ora s ancestors: Scarlet Watson Latitude and Longitude Kiziah (Walker) Watson Latitude and Longitude Richard C. Watson Latutude and Longitude Amanda Melvina (Paddock) Watson Latitude and Longitude Ora (Watson) Piety s connection to these ancestors is as follows: Scarlet Watson and Kiziah (Walker) Watson - GrGrandparents Richard C. Watson and Amanda Melvina (Paddock) Watson - Grandparents James Buchanan Watson and Clara E. (Devol) Watson - Parents Ora Frances (Watson) Piety Scarlet Watson was born 26 Jul 1801 near Fairfax VA to John M. and Permelia (Fisher) Watson. John Watson moved his family to Kentucky, then Sullivan Co IN, and finally Vigo Co. IN in On 2 Dec 1830, John Watson received a 80-acre land grant in Vigo Co. Scarlet also received four Vigo Co. land grants: 07 Apr 1835 for 40 acres 07 Sep 1838 for 80 acres 01 Sep 1839 two: 120 and 40 acres Kiziah Walker ( Kesia or Kizzia ) was born 21 Jul 1805 in Nelson/Spencer Co. KY to Mareen Duvall Walker and Ann (Berry) Walker. The marriage bond for Scarlet and Kiziah was executed by Mareen Devol, Kiziah s father, on 17 Dec Scarlet and Kiziah were married 20 Dec 1825 in Nelson Co. KY by Minister Moses Pierson. Page 17

Scarlet Watson died 09 Feb Kiziah (Walker) Watson died 04 Jan 1883 (or 1888 unclear from tombstone). Because Indiana began birth and death certificates in 1882, Kiziah s death in either 1883 or 1888 should have been recorded with a death certificate. But a search request from Vigo County IN found no record of her death. Possibly she died in another County and was transported back to Watson Cemetery for burial. Kiziah s name is also inscribed on the south (right) side of Scarlet Watson s stone, as is barely legible in this smaller picture of Scarlet s stone. Richard C. Watson was born 07 Oct 1826 in Spencer Co. KY to Scarlet and Kiziah (Walker) Watson. Amanda Melvina Paddock was born 21 May 1832 in Vigo Co. IN to Lewis and Mary B. (Shattuck) Paddock. Richard married three times. Richard s first wife was Louisa Ranney. Richard and Louisa were married by Asa Frakes on 18 May Louisa was born 30 Jul 1829 and died 08 Nov 1848, less than six months after their wedding. Louisa s death might be related to complications of pregnancy, as they supposedly had a child born in 1848 who also died in Nov Richard remarried 26 Sep 1850 in Vigo County to Amanda Melvina Paddock. Richard and Amanda Watson had three children die in infancy and four sons who lived into adulthood. Before Albert Watson, their youngest, was 12 months old, Amanda died, on 30 Sep Page 18

On 13 Jun 1870, Richard remarried again. Richard s third wife was Julia B. Stout. Julia (Stout) Watson had been dismissed 11 Apr 1863 from the Prairie Creek Church of Christ, after having been one of the charter members when the congregation was organized in Sep Richard Watson was admitted to the Prairie Creek Church of Christ in March Richard Watson died 10 Aug 1886 in Prairie Creek, after 4 months of Hydropericardium. The Watson section of the Watson Cemetery is in the far northeast corner of the Cemetery. This picture of the northeast corner, looking east, identifies Scarlet/Kiziah Watson s combination stone (Kiziah s personal stone is immediately right of the combination stone), as well as tombstones of Louisa (Ranney) Watson, Richard Watson, and Amanda (Paddock) Watson. NOTE: The picture s identification of tombstones for Amanda (Paddock) Watson and Richard Watson are backwards. From left-to-right, they should be identified as Louisa, Richard, and Amanda. Page 19

West Lawn Cemetery, Prairie Creek, Vigo Co., IN West Lawn Cemetery is located just west of Prairie Creek, on the north side of West Middletown Drive. West Lawn Cemetery is the burial site of at least 7 of Zadoc Piety s ancestors and 3 of Ora (Watson) Piety s: Elijah Thomas Latitude and Longitude Sarah (Pound) Thomas Latitude and Longitude Emily (Thomas) Piety Latitude and Longitude William Gregory Trueblood Latitude and Longitude Hetty Taylor (Beauchamp) Trueblood Latitude and Longitude John D. Early Piety Latitude and Longitude Mary Phedora (Trueblood) Piety Latitude and Longitude John Wesley Devol Latitude and Longitude James Bucahnan Watson- Latitude and Longitude Clara E. (Devol) Watson- Latitude and Longitude Zadoc and Ora are connected to these ancestors as follows: Elijah Thomas and Sarah (Pound) Thomas GrGrandparents Thomas Piety and Emily (Thomas) Piety - Grandparents John D. Early Piety and Mary Phedora (Trueblood) Piety - Parents Zadoc John Piety William Gregory Trueblood and Hetty Taylor (Beauchamp) Trueblood - Grandparents John D. Early Piety and Mary Phedora (Trueblood) Piety - Parents Zadoc John Piety John Wesley Devol and Frances Fannie Harriet (Heap) Devol - Grandparents James Buchanan Watson and Clara E. (Devol) Watson - Parents Ora Frances (Watson) Piety Elijah Thomas was born 22 Feb 1801 in Butler Co. OH to William and Margaret (Marshall) Thomas, who are both buried at Middleton Cemetery in Prairie Creek. (For information related to their family, refer to the Middleton Cemetery.) Sarah Pound was born 08 Mar 1799 in Butler Co. OH to Thomas and Sarah (Kester) Pound, who are both buried at Second Prairie Creek Cemetery. (For information related to their family, refer to the Second Prairie Creek Cemetery.) Elijah Thomas was married to Sarah Pound on 01 Mar 1820 in Vigo Co. IN by Aaron Frakes M.G. (Minister of the Gospel). Aaron Frakes recorded their marriage on 21 Apr Page 20

Elijah Thomas died 11 Dec Sarah (Pound) Thomas died 30 Jan They share a plot near the southwest corner of West Lawn Cemetery. Their plot is the only one near that corner which is enclosed by a short metal fence. Sarah s information is inscribed on the opposite (north) side of the same stone. Elijah and Sarah had at least three daughters, Zadoc s paternal grandmother Emily (born 1828), Mary Ellen (born 1834), and Eunice (born about 1841). Emily Thomas was born 09 May 1828 in Vigo Co. IN to Elijah and Sarah (Pound) Thomas (see above). Emily married Thomas Piety on 22 Mar 1846 in Vigo Co. IN, a ceremony conducted by Asa Frakes. (For information about Emily and Thomas, refer to Middleton Cemetery, where Thomas was buried.) After Thomas Piety s death on 11 Oct 1853, Emily remained a single mother of their two children, John D. Early Piety (born 16 Apr 1848) and Elijah T. Piety (born 08 May 1852). Upon his death, Emily sold their mill and bought a home in Middletown (Prairie Creek). They lived at that house until her sons were grown. Thomas Piety also owned a farm one mile east of Middletown when he died. But no residence seems to have been at that farm until after his death. Before John D. Early was of age, Emily gave the farm east of town to John, and before Elijah was of age, she gave Elijah the farm north of town. Their son Elijah T. Piety was baptized at the Prairie Creek Church of Christ on 14 Dec On 15 Dec 1865 (the next day), their older son John D. Early Piety was also baptized, along with six other people. In all, there were 13 baptisms at the congregation between December 13 th and 19 th of that year. Possibly there was some type of revival or Gospel Meeting at the congregation during those dates. Note: Later records of the congregation indicate that Elijah Piety was dismissed 27 Dec 1868, reclaimed 12 Mar 1871, dismissed again, then reclaimed again 13 Dec For the 1880 Census, Emily (Thomas) Piety was living with her son John s family. According to a family history book, Emily died in Vigo County in 1891, which would explain why I cannot locate her in the 1900 Census. However her tombstone in West Lawn Cemetery has her death date as 19 Oct 1900 (which should have included her in the 1900 Census). Note: Emily s tombstone has her husband s name spelled Tomas rather than Thomas. The stone also has their marriage date as 28 Mar 1846, rather than 22 Mar 1846, the date reported by the minister who conducted the ceremony. Page 21

William Gregory Trueblood was born 5 Oct 1815 in Camden Co. NC to Benoni and Bridget (Gregory) Trueblood, both of whom are buried at Trueblood Cemetery. (For information on Benoni and Bridget Trueblood, see the Trueblood Cemetery information.) William moved with his parent to Vigo County IN in 1828, when he was about 13 years old. Hetty Taylor Beauchamp was born 20 Jun 1825 in Vigo Co. IN to Reuben Handy and Elizabeth (Kester) Beauchamp, both of whom are buried in Second Prairie Creek Cemetery. (For information on Reuben and Elizabeth Beauchamp, see the Second Prairie Creek Cemetery information.) William Trueblood and Hetty Beauchamp were married in Terre Haute (Vigo Co. IN) by William B. Eldridge on 10 Dec In the 1870 Census of Prairie Creek, Vigo County, William s farm had an estimated value of $6,800. William Trueblood died 22 Feb 1879 in Vigo County. After Wiliam s death, Hetty married Guilford Dudley Thomas on 02 Jul Guilford, a Texas resident, was also a native of Vigo Co. IN, born 06 May 1821, and was visiting relatives in Vigo County. Guilford was brother of Laurinda Thomas (2 nd wife of James Duncan Piety). Guilford took Hetty back to Texas, where they lived until Guilford s death 19 Jan In the 1900 Census, Hetty Thomas was living in Mills TX with her daughter s family... Carrie B (Beauchamp) Stark and Carrie s husband Gilbert Stark. After returning to Vigo County to live with other children, Hetty met and married Israel French. She was living with Israel s son William Shelby French in the 1910 Census of Pierson, Vigo County IN. In the 1920 Census, she was living in Linton Township, Vigo County IN, with her daughter Rachel (Trueblood) Weeks. This picture of Hetty with Israel French might have been their wedding picture. Hetty s information Hetty Beuchamp wife of W. G. Trueblood Jun is inscribed on the back (east) side of William s tombstone without any date of death. Probably the partial inscription (missing death date) was made at the time of William s death. Because the death date is not inscribed, it is not a certainty that she was buried near William, who died 46 years earlier. The Vigo County Clerk was not able to locate a death record for her. Page 22

John D. Early Piety was born 16 Apr 1848 in Vigo Co. IN to Thomas and Emily (Thomas) Piety (see above). The D. of his name probably came from Duncan, similar to his paternal grandfather s name James Duncan Piety and James mother s maiden name Mary Duncan. John was in attendance among the charter members of the Prairie Creek Church of Christ in Sep 1851, although his baptism date was 15 Dec 1865, one day after his younger brother Elijah was also baptized. Mary Phedora Trueblood was born 01 Apr 1851 in Vigo Co. IN to William Gregory and Hetty Taylor (Beauchamp) Trueblood (see above). John Piety and Mary Trueblood were married in Vigo County IN by J. K. Carr on 01 Apr John and Mary had at least 5 children who died before their 10 th birthdays. A common stone (picture above) for all of those children is near the stone for John and Mary at West Lawn Cemetery. This picture of John and Mary (Trueblood) Piety was taken for their 50 th wedding anniversary, which would have been celebrated on April 1, Page 23

John Piety died 17 Jan 1922, after suffering from cancer of the stomach and bowels, as well as 5 months of fatty degeneration of the heart. After John s death, Mary moved west, where she was living for the 1930 Census. At that time she was with her daughter Sarah in Glendale Twp., Los Angeles, CA. But she soon returned to Vigo County, where she died of mesenteric thrombosis and chronic arteriosclerosis on 09 Jul John W. Devol was born 28 Jun 1836 in Kentucky to Benjamin Franklin Devol and Nancy Ann Turnham. He was probably born in Spencer County KY. A Devol Family history incorrectly (in my judgment) says John s mother was Lucy Ann Butler and that he was born in Elkton, Todd Co., KY. That incorrect information is due to confusion of Benjamin Franklin Devol (John s father) and Benjamin Duvall of Todd Co. KY, who married 23 Feb 1836 to Lucy Ann Butler in Elkton, Todd Co. KY. Benjamin Franklin Devol (John s father) was son of Gilbert Devol Jr. and Rachel Peck. Gilbert and Rachel lived near Marietta, Washington County, OH, at the time Benjamin was born. Benjamin and one of his cousins each married into the family of George and Nancy Turnham of Spencer County KY. The will of George Turnham mentions each of them. However Benjamin Duvall of Todd County (not John s father) was son of Lewis Duvall and Margaret Butler. Lewis was son of Benjamin Skinner Duvall and Elizabeth Howard. This Duvall family was from Prince George, MD, and moved to Muhlenberg, KY. The Duvall family descends from Mareen Duvall and Sarah Griffith. Kiziah Watson (see Watson Cemetery) also descended from Mareen and Sarah Duvall, through Priscilla Duvall, Kiziah s paternal grandmother. Frances ( Fannie ) Harriet Heap was born 11 Jan 1837 in Ohio to George Washington Heap and Elizabeth (Fiske) Heap. Before 1860, George and Elizabeth Heap moved with his parents and other family members to Richland Co. IL, where they (Frances parents and paternal grandparents) are buried. John Devol and Frances Heap married 05 Feb 1857 in Olney, Richland Co. IL. I don t know how John, living near Prairie Creek, and Frances, from near Olney (over 50 miles away), met each other. Because John was not yet 21 years old when they married, the consent of his father Benjamin was required for the marriage. Frances was also less than 21 years old, but no similar consent exists in the Richland County Courthouse for her to marry. Page 24

John and Frances Devol were living in Illinois when their sons George (11 Aug 1858) and Charlie (03 Jun 1860) were born. They were living in Richland County IL for the 1860 Census. But they moved back to Vigo County before Clara s birth 17 Aug On 04 May 1864, John Devol enrolled at Terre Haute Indiana for Union service in the Civil War. John was in Captain Ike L. Mahan s Company in the 100 days service. This Company was organized at Terre Haute IN as Company C, 133 rd Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry. John Devol was appointed Corporal. John was described as being 5 7 high, dark complexion, black hair, and blue eyes. Occupation was Carpenter (which was also his listed occupation in the 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1900 Censuses of Vigo Co IN). At Bridgeport AL on 15 August 1864, John received an injury to the right hip by a fall while in the line of duty. He was mustered out with his Company on 5 Sep 1864 in Indianapolis. According to family records, Frances Harriet (Heap) Devol died 28 Nov 1890 in Prairie Creek. But I have been unable to obtain a death certificate for her or locate a tombstone for her in any of the Vigo County Cemetery indices. She also is not listed among the burials at the Richland County IL cemeteries of her parents or paternal grandparents. On 09 Jul 1892, John remarried a widow Martha (Trueblood) Hunt. On the application for marriage, Martha Hunt is listed as both the bride and John s mother s maiden name. John Devol was admitted 15 Oct 1853 (probably his baptism date) to the Prairie Creek Church of Christ, reclaimed 06 Dec 1857, dismissed 27 Dec 1868, and reclaimed 15 Feb John s 2 nd wife Martha (Trueblood/Hunt) Devol was admitted to the congregation 10 Feb John Devol died of acute cystitis in Prairie Creek on 12 Jul James Buchanan Watson was born 15 Oct 1857 (according to his 1900 Census record and tombstone) in Vigo County to Richard C. and Amanda Melvina (Paddock) Watson. (For information on Richard and Amanda Watson, see the Watson Cemetery information.) He was likely named for James Buchanan, President of the U.S. when he was born. Note: James certified death certificate shows his birth date as 15 Oct 1856, and his age at his 29 Apr 1938 death to be 81 years, 6 months, 14 days, which would have made his birth year In November 1875, James B. Watson was admitted by letter to the Prairie Creek Church of Christ. Clara E. Devol was born 17 Aug 1863 (according to her 1900 Census record and tombstone) in Prairie Creek, Vigo Co., IN to John W. and Frances Harriet (Heap) Devol. Note: Clara s certified death certificate shows her birth date as 17 Aug 1862, and her age at her 13 May 1932 death to be 69 years, 8 months, and 26 days, which would have made her birth year Clara was admitted to the Prairie Creek Church of Christ in February Page 25

James Watson and Clara Devol married 24 Dec 1879 in Vigo County IN. Page 26

Clara (Devol) Watson died 13 May 1932 in Prairie Creek of stomach cancer and chronic myocarditis. Her obituary was printed on page 2 of the Terre Haute Tribune 15 May James B. Watson died in Prairie Creek on 29 Apr 1938 of Arteriosclerosis and 1 hour of a cerebral hemorrhage. His obituary was printed in both the Terre Haute Star and Tribune on 30 Apr Page 27
