1 Here it is, the beginning of June already. I hope your Mother s Day was a good and memorable one. Time, though, seems to pass quickly doesn t it? Save the Date June 5 th -9 th Blitz Build at the Camp in Newton August 23 rd All Congregational Gathering at the CCC in Newton. In the coming months, the strategic planning group is planning on meeting every week to talk about strategic planning. As I have said before, Gild Rendle, someone who is interested in the mainline church and its revitalization, has said that every church needs to ask itself three questions: (1) Who are we; (2) Who is our neighbor; and (3) who are we being called to serve? The strategic planning group is considering Rendle s questions in the context of what is happening in the Waukee community. In addition, the search committee for the next settled pastor is being formed. We have also had opportunities to sit and talk as a church in times before the church services and in other forums. From my perspective, I think this kind of conversation is essential for any church; but it is especially helpful for Waukee Christian Church as it puts together a church profile and thinks about the qualities and strengths WCC needs in a settled minister to help move it forward as a Christian witness of welcome and wholeness to the Waukee community. So, thank you for your involvement. Thank you for your input and your loving spirit. I really do think that good things and God s blessings lay ahead for Waukee Christian Church. Rev. Brad Thornton waukee.interim.minister@gmail.com T Avenue P.O. Box 278 Phone: waukeechristianchurch@msn.com
2 Working Together to Capture God s Vision for Waukee Christian Church Calling all Missionaries! Reminder that we will be spending the week of June 5-9 at the Christian Conference Center in Newton. We will be working on the Chi Rho cabins readying them for the campers. One of the traditions of a Mission Group is that we have morning and evening devotions. Since we are a come as you can group and not everyone is planning to stay overnight, please try to bring a devotion and we will have devotional time when we finish for the day. Looking forward to seeing everyone and enjoying the fellowship that mission work is guaranteed to provide! Thanks! Rosalie Pfeifer Launched after the April 23, 2017, building informational meeting, it was agreed that a review of the WCC vision and strategic plan should be done to prepare for important decisions that will be made as we move forward. To that end, an Ad Hoc Strategic Working Group was formed and has been meeting regularly, with the intent of capturing the congregation s thoughts on direction. The group is working on gathering information from the congregation to support updating the vision/mission and strategic plan. This material will then be presented for congregational approval. The resulting updates will then provide a strong foundation to support the search for a full-time pastor and any decisions that need be made regarding facilities and programs. In capturing the thoughts of the congregation, we are sure you have noticed a comment board has been installed in the fellowship hall. This board allows input from individuals on a variety of topics; Worship, Mission/Outreach, Christian Ed, Evangelism, Hospitality, Property, Stewardship and Other. We encourage all to take time to prayerfully consider adding your thoughts to the board. The board will remain up through mid- June before the group tries to consolidate the thoughts and ideas presented. Pastor Brad has been coordinating informational sessions before church to discuss the work of this group and general discussions on the church s moving forward. Please attend those sessions as you can and help craft the future of WCC. These types of communications are critical in this time of change for our church, so watch for opportunities to engage in planning for the future and hear the progress that is being made. Your Strategic Working Group is made up of Marc De Jong, Lee Foltz, Lorrie Grandgenett, Ron Hardersen, Jack Harris, Haley Silverthorn, Ryan Taylor, Cathy Conklin and Pastor Brad Thornton. Don t hesitate to contact any of the members with your thoughts and comments.
3 Thanks to Shari, Janelle, Lorie and Julie for helping the children with sweet treats! Our Sunday school teachers for all their service and dedication to the children and adults of our congregation Congratulations to our graduates! Volunteers Needed! Do you love having children in church? Then we want to make sure we offer them and their parents excellent childcare. As our numbers increase, it will be good to offer some back up in the nursery during worship. We have excellent nursery attendants, but the child to adult ratio is high. Listen to see if God is calling you to this important ministry. Let the office know if you can volunteer once every 4-5 weeks as a nursery assistant. And, on those Sundays when our nursery staff is gone, you can substitute for them. We would like to thank everyone for the lovely gifts we received for our bridal shower. We appreciate the support that everyone has given us. We would like to thank everyone who helped put on the shower for us. We had a fantastic day and were so blessed to be married at the church on April 1st. Thank you for letting us use the church for our wedding. Derek & Jessica Heisdorffer Thank you to all for your prayers, get well wishes, and food during my recent hospitalization and continued recovery. It is comforting to know that our Waukee Christian Church truly is a loving, kind and supportive family. Sincerely, Rosalie Pfeifer
