4 Greetings Ladies and Brethren, From The East As summer is fast approaching, we re picking up more pace here in our lodge. Let me take this opportunity to give a hearty welcome aboard to brothers: Joseph Kuntz, Samvel Abadjyan, Sean Rosall and Michael Moon our most recent Entered Apprentices. Also, congratulations to bros. Robert Meyers and Sean Patrick, who have passed to the Fellow Craft degree. We take pride in having such men of good character and zeal joining our ranks. This month s scheduled reception for Right Worshipful William J. Bray III, the Junior Grand Warden has been postponed indefinitely due to an impending surgical intervention around the time of the scheduled event. We wish the Right Worshipful the best of luck and a prompt recovery. In June we celebrate Father s Day, so a big hug and happy Father s Day to all of you. But June is not all about fathers, for we also celebrate Saint John the Baptist Day, one of the patron saints of Freemasonry together with John the Evangelist. So, happy Saint John celebrations to the Johns and Hovannesses, who may be either brothers in our lodge or just someone you happen to know. I like to thank the degree team for your splendid rendition of our rituals. I also like to thank our Passed Masters for assisting me with the degree work, cooking those scrumptious meals or just being there for us all whenever a contingency situation might come up! Thank you investigation committee members, you have been doing an excellent job. Don t forget to check the details to our charity golf tournament in this month s hourglass. It s on Sunday, June 20, 2008 at Knollwood Counrty Club, in Granada Hills. You are all invited, it s for a good cause! One last note, next month we are going to have our yearly Summer Barbeque. Come and join us, enjoy the food and have a great time! Until the next time, stay well and enjoy this beautiful weather! 5 From The West (cont.) with the purity of Deity, which Masons attempt to emulate. Others refer to the change made by speculative Masons shortly after the establishment of the original Grand Lodge of England when blue was substituted for white as the official Masonic color, presumably because it was the color of the Order of the Garter of which a number of Masonic leaders were members. I hope this sheds light on some questions you may have wondered about. Please feel free to contact me with any inquiries concerning our wonderful craft. On the Level, Roni Zulu Senior Warden The Past Master s Page If you haven t seen it yet, there was an article on Freemasonry in the Los Angeles Times on Sunday, May 18. Our very own Senior Warden, brother Zulu, was prominently featured, and it was a very positive article about our ancient and honorable fraternity. For those of you who are technologically savvy, you can check out the article on the L.A. Times website. I ve been pleased and honored to serve as the Officers Coach for our lodge since I took off the top hat in December. If you haven t been to the lodge in a while, I encourage you to come see your officer corps perform one of the degrees - they are very good at it, and they take pleasure in performing it well. Now that we re about halfway through the year, we ll be moving to advanced stations - which means that the officers will start practicing the ceremonies for the positions they ll be in next year. Some of our newest brothers have been invited to join the line of officers, and I look forward to working with them in upholding the high standards of our lodge. Our lodge is doing well, my brothers. As the Officers Coach and a fan of the ritual, of course I tend to focus on our initiations. But we also have a vibrant lodge socially, and I can truly say that I look forward to hanging out with the guys every week. Worshipful Gregory is a natural consensus-building, brother Zulu is already preparing for his year as Master, and we have a strong line of upcoming officers for the foreseeable future. I hope you all are enjoying the beginning of summer, and I ll see you at the lodge. Sincerely and fraternally, Steve Barr, PM (15)
6 The Fallow Craft degree encapsulates a great deal of knowledge based on ancient knowledge and mysticism. As we have said before, there are always many interpretations relative to the symbolisms and meaning of each degree. We have talked how Entered Apprentices are considered to be in a nascent state, taking their first baby steps in Masonry. View in this optics, The Fellow Craft degree symbolizes the stage of adulthood and responsibility during the man s life on Earth. This is the stage where he is expected to acquire knowledge and apply it to build his character and improve the society in which he lives. Whereas the first degree emphasizes the body and the faculty of actions by extolling the four virtues that guide our relations with the World, the Fellow Craft degree focuses on the mind and its faculties as part of improving our human nature. The degree addresses the importance of liberal arts and sciences in one s life, as the beacon of light that guides the initiate in his Masonic journey towards light. Only by honing his mental faculties that the Fellow Craft is able to grow his wings that would eventually enable him to soar and embrace the spiritual heights that would follow in the Third Degree. The Fellow Craft degree abounds with keen and beautiful symbolisms and lessons. Unfortunately, we don t have the necessary space in this edition of Hourglass to expound on them. If one thing I could fit in this tiny space, it would be the Pillars on the porch. The Pillars at King Solomon s Temple represented strength and establishment that are the concomitant of power and control. So, among other things, in the second degree the Fellow Craft is placed before power and control. Power without control is anarchy and control without power is sheer futility. As Masons, we are always striving to strike a sound balance between these two important factors. Only by doing so we may be effective in what we do, without compromising the harmonious balance that is the essence of everything good and the true source of one s happiness in life. 7 BRETHREN IN SICKNESS OR DISTRESS Please aid and assist these distressed worthy brethren. If you know of any other brother in sickness or distress, please let us know. Worshipful Don Maltby is having medical issues with his hip Brother Bill Greene is nearly blind Lily Mae Green has suffered a heart attack. Please contact brother Bill Greene with any support you can. From The West My Beloved Brethren, There is much Masonic lore and jargon that can be confusing to the novice Mason. I am listing further explanations as a service to our Entered Apprentices, Fellowcrafts, family and any others who might be in wonder of these terms. Q: Must all Masons be obligated on the Bible? A: The primary requirement of a Freemason is a belief in a Supreme Being, whether it be called God, Goddess, Allah, Jehovah or any of the names by which the Supreme Architect of the Universe may be designated. Hence a candidate for Freemasonry should be obligated on a book he considers to be a Volume of the Sacred Law of his religious faith, (e.g. Holy Bible, Torah, Koran). Q: Who are the Members of Grand Lodge? A: The Grand Lodge Officers, Past Grand Masters, Past Masters and the Worshipful Masters and Wardens of all Symbolic Lodges lawfully warranted and duly constituted by the Grand Lodge of California and under its Jurisdiction. Q: What Lodges may be visited? A: Only Lodges that are under the jurisdiction of Grand Lodges your Grand Lodge recognizes as being legitimate. When traveling in other jurisdictions and planning Lodge visits, it is important to make inquiries of your Lodge Secretary, and your District Deputy Grand Master, before starting on your trip. Q: What was the origin of the expression Blue Lodges? A: There are several theories, of which two have the most adherents. Some believe that operative Masons felt that blue, the color of the sky both by day and by night, was associated in their minds (13) (6) Cont. P.15
8 From The South I have always wondered what the phrase the Lodge of the Holy Sts. John at Jerusalem was referring to or what it actually was. In all of my historic and religious studies I had never come across this phrase or location. So I did some research and found some interesting stuff. Originally, Lodges were dedicated to King Solomon. Later - at least as early as Masonry connected her name with that of St. John the Evangelist. Dedications to the Sts. John were made by other organizations as early as the third century, when the Church adopted the two pagan celebrations of summer and winter solstices and made of them our St. John s Day in Summer and St. John s Day in Winter. It was wholly natural for operative Masons, having dedicated their Craft to the Holy Sts. John, to begin to believe the Johns were themselves Craftsmen. Craftsmen must have a Lodge - where should that Lodge be, but in Jerusalem Hence The Lodge of the Holy Sts. John at Jerusalem came into imaginary existence. Today, as we use the phrase as the starting point for a Masonic career, Masons mean only that their Craft is dedicated to these holy men, whose precepts and practices, ideas and virtues, teachings and examples, all Freemasons should try to follow. Entered Apprentice & Fellow Craft Members... All Entered Apprentice & Fellow Craft masons are expected to attend Lodge every Thursday night for proficiency instruction. This is your opportunity to advance through the degrees as quickly as possible, and it is your opportunity to get acquainted with the brethren of North Hollywood Lodge. The candidate coaches will be present and will keep you moving along toward your goal. While the memory work may seem out of reach at first, you will find that by being coached through the work, you will advance with ease. Don t be shy. Don t worry about your speed of attainment as each person is able to memorize at their own pace. Stuart Richard Williams Harvey Presser Don Regis from the South Lance Huston Junior Warden (12)
9 Brethren: From The Temple Board Frankly there is not a whole lot to report this month, again. We are still in talks with the developers who are interested in our parking lot. Brother RJ Comer and Brother Gary Holme are working on getting more information and details. Hopefully we will have more to report in the coming months. Just a reminder that we meet the day before the Stated Meeting at 7:00 pm. Fraternally, Chris Holme President Mission Statement It is the Mission of the North Hollywood Building Association to manage the property of the North Hollywood Masonic Lodge in a financially responsible manner; to generate revenue from the use of the facility and maintain the building s aesthetics, make improvements to the facility, and see to all needed repair work. It is also the duty of the association to oversee relationships with vendors, renters, and properties surrounding the building in a manner fitting the fraternity. (11) From the Secretary Greetings Brethren... The month of May was a busy time in the Lodge. Our Stated Meeting dinner was prepared by Wor. Avedis Abdoyan, and which included all those great trimmings. It was really great. The brethren should take advantage of these wonderfully prepared meals, and come to Lodge and enjoy the dinner at 6:30 p.m. and support the Lodge and then participate in the meeting after dinner. Every Thursday evening meeting was an event of either Candidate proficiency presentations or the conferral of Degrees. We are fortunate to have these new Candidates with a quest for membership in our Lodge and Freemasonry. I wish to express my Congratulations and welcome to Brothers Sean Meehan and Martin Amador for their advancement, as Fellowcraft Masons on May 15. As of the time that I am writing this article, it has been scheduled that on May 22nd and 29th, the conferral of the Entered Apprentice Degree will be presented to our new Candidate applicants. And also, the same busy schedule will hold true for the month of June. The Master, Wor. Gregory Kabchanian and Lodge Officers are working diligently to present Further Light in Masonry, and give our Candidates an opportunity to participate in Lodge activities. So come on out, attend if you can, and greet these new Brothers as they advance in Freemasonry. I would like to acknowledge all of our Brethren that may be sick or in ill health, express to them my sincere wishes for their recovery and good health, and a special Greeting to Wor. Donald Maltby, and also to Bro. Bill Green, who just can t regularly attend Lodge any more. Once again, the timely reminder for those Brethren that have not yet become current in their Dues for 2008, don t forget your Lodge. Summer is fast approaching, with all it great weather, so I wish to you Good Heath, and prosperity to enjoy it all. Fraternally, Bruce E. Hudson, P.M., Secretary (8)
