2 HOPE in Lancaster Monthly Needs: Canned Chicken, Vegetables, Beef Stew, Fruit, and Pasta. Jelly, Peanut Butter, Grits, 1 lb. bag rice, Instant Potatoes, and Stuffing Mix. Diabetic friendly foods, such as Sugar Free Jelly and 100% Fruit Juices HOPE in Lancaster wishes to thank everyone for their continued support. The needs are greater than ever! The staff at HOPE always thanks our church for its continued support. They tell us they can always count on the people of Tabernacle. We are so blessed to be able to share. They plan to prepare 400 food boxes this year for Christmas. 200 of those boxes will go to those who participate in HOPE s Senior Food Pantry. As this population grows, the need grows. Thank you, Tabernacle, for sharing with both food and monetary donations. Every cent and every can counts! We will collect our Red Stocking offering through December 17. HOPE in Lancaster is the recipient of this offering. The congregation will have the opportunity to place their offering in the red stocking during the first hymn. YOU contribute all year and YOU are an important part of Tabernacle United Methodist Women. Please join us for an evening of Thanks and Celebration Monday December 4, 2014 at 7pm We will enjoy fellowship and food, and we will prepare Christmas gift bags for our shut-ins. Please bring a snack to share. We look forward to seeing you on December 4 th Music Notes The choir will be singing Advent and Christmas anthems during the month of December. Also, on December 17, we will have a special service The Music and Scriptures of Christmas. This service will include carols and anthems for the Christmas season and music by the youth and children and the handbell choir. We hope you will be present for all the Sunday s leading up to Christmas. The UMW is sponsoring a Christmas Card Exchange. Does it make the season more a hassle than a joy? Pastor Mike Slaughter reminds us that Christmas isn t about perfect presents for people, as if it were their birthday or ours. Christmas is about the perfect presence of Immanuel, God with us, through the birth of Jesus; it s his birthday, after all! In Christmas Is Not Your Birthday (Abingdon), Slaughter writes, How funny that it can be so hard to find gifts that will please certain family members or friends the people who seem to have everything and yet it is so clear what the Lord of lords and King of kings wants for his birthday. God wants you your time, your talent and your treasure used in service to others.

4 News of Grave Interest December, 2017 This is our last newsletter for 2017! Earlier this year I mentioned it would be a busy summer in our cemetery. And busy it was! However, all of our hard work paid off. On November 5th the dedication service was held for the Unknown Graves and newly marked graves. The dedication was well attended and enjoyed by all. As I was thinking over the events of this past year I wondered what may have been happening at Tabernacle Church a hundred years ago. I found an interesting article that shares events at Tabernacle in I have retyped it due to the poor quality of the newsprint. The Lancaster News December 23, 1905 Tabernacle Tidings Entertainment and Basket Supper Liberally Patronized and Greatly Enjoyed; Principal Hamel s Successful Work; Improvements in Tabernacle The entertainment at Tabernacle School came off, as per announcement, Saturday night, the 16 th, inst. A large crowd gathered at the school house to hear the exercises, and to partake of the supper that was sold in baskets. As had been previously announced, the following was most creditably rendered: 1. Song by the school students. 2. Recitation by Miss Odessa Plyler, If you will chew Tobacco, you must swallow the spit. 3. Comic declamation Uncle Rastus Blessings by George Carnes 4. A play entitled Handy Andy by several boys and girls of the Tabernacle school 5. An address by J.C. Hamel, Principal of the school The exercises were all good and highly enjoyed by all present. The parties representing the different characters in the play, rendered their parts with great credit to themselves and teachers. The recitations were exceptionally fine and were enjoyed and highly praised by all who heard them. Prof. Hamel gave us a most excellent address, and many were the compliments we heard given him. Following the exercises mentioned above, the basket sale was taken up. Mr. W.A. Funderburk, in his business way of doing things, soon had the boys bidding for dear life lest some other fellow got his best girls basket, and in a short time all the baskets were disposed of, at fair prices. Supper was then served. The committee then offered some fruit and other articles for sale, which were soon disposed of. Total net proceeds were $ We are pleased to say the occasion was a grand success. The school is now in a prosperous condition. We have a good attendance, and with a man like Prof. Hamel at the helm, we are bound to succeed.

5 The Christmas Holidays will soon be here, and our people will spend them in various ways, some hunting, some visiting, &c. We hope that all may enjoy the occasion in its fullest sense. A great deal of improvements in the way of building and painting are going on in this section. Messrs. Picket Plyler and Wesley Rowell will build nice dwellings in the near future. Mr. General Griffin will enlarge his commodious store-room. Mr. H.S. Plyler is having his handsome dwelling painted. Mr. Daniel Todd has the contract. On the whole, Tabernacle is making great strides along all lines. It is, in our opinion, the garden spot of Lancaster County. All we need now is the C & L railroad to come this way and then you would see things hum. A.C.R. OK, SC Dec. 20,1905 NOTES: The Tabernacle school house was located across Tabernacle Road from the church in the area next to the current playground. The current Tabernacle area was considered the OK section. Mail was addressed to OK, South Carolina. The submitter of the Tabernacle Tidings at this time was Andrew Clark Rowell (A.C.R.) He was the father of Gladys Rowell Sullivan. Their old homeplace still stands on Tabernacle Road just past Elizabeth Hyatt s house. Elizabeth Hyatt and her family live in the nice dwelling soon to be built by Pickett Plyler. He was the great grandfather of Elizabeth and the grandfather of Mary Maxwell Riner. The nice dwelling soon to be built by Wesley Rowell is still visible on Mary Lee Lane near Rowell Road. Sam and Suzan Courtney lived in this home for the first 5 years of their marriage. The property was owned by Wesley s daughter, Azalee and her husband Everette Taylor at the time and the home was in excellent condition. Wesley Rowell (given name was Joshua Sylvester) also known as Uncle Wes was a son of Lewis and Nellie Rowell. Mr. H.S. Plyler was H. Simeon Plyler, father of Pickett Plyler. His home is still standing and is located on Shiloh Unity Road across from Mary Maxwell, Bill, and Pickett Riner Our greatest need If our greatest need had been information, God would have sent us an educator. If our greatest need had been technology, God would have sent us a scientist. If our greatest need had been money, God would have sent us an economist. If our greatest need had been pleasure, God would have sent us an entertainer. But our greatest need was forgiveness and acceptance, so God sent us a Savior. Author unknown
