1 VOLUME LXXVI Greenbelt American Legion Post 136 Contact 6900 Greenbelt Rd, Greenbelt, MD March/April 2019 ISSUE XXXII COMMANDER S MESSAGE In spite of the threat of snow, ice and rain, we started 2019 with two successful Super Bowl parties. I believe that everyone enjoyed the food, entertainment and good fellowship. It was a team effort and I want to thank all the volunteers who made the parties such a success. Because the demand for Super Bowl squares is so high, I made a decision that will encourage square holders to pay for their slots in a timely manner and allow us to manage the parties with more certainty. After making numerous calls to owners of unpaid squares last November and December, I have set a deadline for the coming year, of October 1, 2019, for Super Bowl payments. After that date all unpaid blocks will be sold on a first-come, first served-basis. I hope you enjoyed our St. Valentine s dinner on February 14 th. It was a great time to be with your loved one and share a special meal. I was particularly proud of those members of Post 136 who stood in front of the U.S. Supreme Court on February 27 th during oral arguments concerning our beloved Peace Cross Memorial. Your support for the memory of the 49 Prince George s County men who died in WWI was inspirational. Our voice was heard. Peace Cross has honored these veterans for nearly 100 years and we cannot allow their memory to be destroyed. As Commander, I take full responsibility for the overall wellbeing of the Post and our Legion Family. This includes ensuring that our Post Home offers a safe and pleasant experience to our members and their guests. Since January, I have instituted several measures that are designed to ensure that only paid-up members and their sponsored guests enjoy the benefits of our Members Lounge (Back Bar). The 100% card check by our bartenders has yielded an increase in the number of paid-up members. Special emphasis on guests being signed in by their sponsoring members and accompanied by those members for the entire duration of their visit, keeps us in conformance with our Post Constitution and By-laws as well as IRS rules for nonprofit Veterans organizations. I have asked the bartenders to be attentive to this process and to challenge anyone who is not in compliance. I expect us all to be welcoming to new faces while the bartenders ensure that only authorized people get served in the Member s Lounge. I was asked not to reveal the names of the two Greenbelt Legionaries who helped a Legionnaire from another Post the day his car broke down on one of our major highways. The two Legionaries stopped what they were doing and spent the entire day helping the guest member get his car to a service center and that evening gave him a ride home. That s the kind of great brotherhood that we at Post 136 can be proud of. You guys know who you are. Thank you for your kindness and being great members of the Greenbelt American Legion Family. When you give kindness, you get kindness. I m glad to know we have members like you two. Now that springtime is approaching, the green in the Irish comes out in all of us on Saint Patrick s Day. On Sunday, March 17 th we will offer our traditional corned beef sandwiches and a delightful Irish dinner so you can enjoy the entire day at the Post. I m sure that Irish music will be played. It s always a nice time. If you re into the games of chance, on Friday, April 12 th, we will host Super Shotgun Bingo. This is always a big event for the Auxiliary at the Post. Come join us. We re not done yet. The Easter buffet on Sunday, April 21 st is always a great meal at a reasonable price. I urge you to come early. Finally, I want to express my appreciation for the enthusiastic support that I have received from so many members. I am honored to serve as your Commander. 2 POST EVERLASTING NOTICE We regret to note that the following Post 136 Legionaries have transferred to Post Everlasting: Page 2 Edward Cockerham Fred Mooney Forrest Cox Eugene Reeside. Man Cannot Hit on the Right time to Act There is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every affair under the heavens. (Ecclesiastes, Chapter 3, 1). PLEASE CONTACT THE CHAPLAIN IF YOU KNOW OF A COMRADE ILL OR TRANSFERRED TO POST EVERLASTING MANAGER'S MESSAGE Greetings to the Post 136 Family, Hope everyone is surviving and navigating safely in this bitter cold weather! Saint Patrick's Day, March 17 th, is fast approaching. We will have plenty of Corned Beef and Cabbage, special desserts, and Irish Coffee. Easter comes late this year, April 21 st. We'll have our traditional Easter buffet that many of you have come to know and love, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. We'll begin accepting reservations on the first of March for parties of five or more. For reservations please call the Post Manager at , extension #1. As you may have noticed, our lunch/dinner menus have been updated. Any feedback about these changes is always welcome. We've had to increase the prices of some of the food items. These changes were made to maintain the quality of the food and the service which you've come to expect from the Post 136 Restaurant. Please encourage your friends and neighbors to try our restaurant the next time they are eating out, or want to try a local inexpensive restaurant. As I mentioned in the last newsletter, WSSC has required the Post to replace our outside grease interceptor. The bidding process is currently underway and soon will be completed. Once approved by WSSC the work will begin, most likely in early Spring. There should be little or no interruption to Post operations. I want to thank all of our volunteers for everything that you do for the Post, including two very successful Super Bowl parties shucking and preparing Oysters Rockefeller, those who worked the front door, and the food servers. Also, I would like to express my thanks and appreciation to the staff and employees for their hard work and dedication in helping to make the Post what it is. Regards, Jay Mayock Post 136 General Manager Managerpost136@Comcast.net NOMINATIONS OF POST 136 OFFICERS FOR Nominations of Post 136 Officers for the Administrative Year are now being accepted. If you are interested in running for an elective office, please contact the Elections Committee Chairman, Bernie Zempolich, at Formal nominations will be made at the April 19 th General Membership Meeting, and elections will be held at our May 18 th General Membership Meeting.

3 SUPER BOWL PARTY VOLUNTEERS Page 3 Each year Post 136 sponsors a number of events such as the 4 th of July and Labor Day Picnics, the Veterans Day and Memorial Day Ceremonies and the Super Bowl Parties. At each event, volunteers from our Post Legion Family perform tasks to make each event an outstanding success. But by far, the two Super Bowl Parties held each year in January require the largest number of volunteers and the largest number of hours put into making the Parties successful. During the morning of each Super Bowl Party, our beloved Oyster Shuckers shuck bushels of fresh oysters for the Oyster Rockefeller appetizers served at the dinner, while other volunteers bake the oysters just prior to and during the dinner. Other volunteers prepare the steamed shrimp that are served as part of the filet mignon dinner and others serve food. Yet other volunteers run the many entertainment functions throughout the dinner, and there are those who check in people before the start of the Party. We want to publicly recognize the following list of individuals who served as volunteers at this year s two Super Bowl Parties held in January in the Sam Hofberg Banquet Hall. 1. Mike Hurm 2. Joe Beam 3. Danny Stange 4. John Stokes 5. Mike McAndrew 6. Don Hudson 7. Jim Harbaugh 8. Mike Santini 9. Bobby Dietz 10. Rick Bailey 11. Ronnie Gould 12. Jack Leslie 13. Gary Barbour 14.
