1 Radio Chaski Update As many reading this may remember, in May of this year, the donated funds to support the purchase of a new AM radio transmitter for the Radio Chaski ministry located in Urubamba, Peru, about an hour from Cusco. It was my pleasure to exchange with Pastor Valentin Quispe and below is a paraphrased excerpt. Given that I m not fluent in Spanish, special thanks must be given to Mark Stringer, WA0VQL, who served as translator for both sides of this exchange. Brian, I greet you cordially. For me it is an honor to greet you by the grace of God. Our mutual friend, Pastor Ken, informed me about the interest of the in helping us in the radio ministry here in Cusco-Peru. We thank the Lord and your organization for this kindness you show us. By the grace of God, I am administrating the radio in several areas mainly, in the part of programming with the help of some brethren. Thank you for backing the work of God and our radio station Chaski. May our God bless the Christian Amateur Radio Fellowship. Pastor Valentin Quispe Administrator of Radio Chaski Pastor Quispe has promised to forward photos at some point so that we can see the transmitter in place. It is indeed an honor to be a part of spreading the gospel and quite special that we can do so via a medium dear to us, radio! New Stations & Members As the Friday morning net control station, one of the most exciting occurrences for me is checking in a new station to the net! While I don t have an official list, it has been gratifying to hear some new stations participating in our 75m net. I welcome each of you and encourage you to continue to join us on-air in daily fellowship. I m also very pleased to extend a welcome to six new members of CARF. For those of you that are number detailed types, you will note that some of these should have been included in the August president s message. We extend our apologies for the oversight. With these new members, CARF now has active members in 25 states and three countries (in addition to the US). 2 40 Meter Net CARF continues to sponsor a 40 meter net on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturaday. The propagation has been good and signals are clear! We invite and welcome additional stations to participate, especially encouraging stations that find the band conditions on 75 meters challenging. Net Control Stations With CARF s increased number nets, occasional vacation time, unexpected illness, and rare equipment failures, there is a need for additional stations willing to serve as substitute Net Control. If you are comfortable with serving in this capacity, have a decent antenna, run an amplifier, and are a member of the Christian Armature Radio Fellowship, please give consideration to serving as a substitute Net Control. You may indicate your desire to serve by sending an to executives@carf.net or by sending a short note to one of the CARF officers (addresses in page footer below). Member Spotlight Name: Orville Wright Johnson QTH: Plymouth, MN Call Sign: WA0ABG Primary HF Rig: TEN-TEC Omni VI Native Of: St. Louis Park, Minnesota Primary HF Amp: TEN-TEC Hercules II Licensed: 1961(Novice & Technician) Current Class: Advanced (from 1977) Antennas: 75m sloping dipole 80 to 25 high, 40m dipole, 10m/15m/20m Tri-Band atop 80 tower Orv is the only son of Carl and Gladys Johnson and was privileged to grow up in a Christian home. In fact, Christianity was such a part of Orv s young life that he recollects always believing in Christ as his savior. Gladys was a school teacher and Carl a mechanic. His mom s love of teaching carried over to motherhood in that she read voraciously to Orv before he started school. Carl and Orv were very close and enjoyed that special relationship. A St. Louis Park High School graduate, Orv took a year off out of high school and worked at the local Packard dealership. His duties were mostly as assigned and included driving a tow truck, picking up parts, rubbing out paint in the body shop, and polishing cars. The beginning of the next school year found him at the University of Minnesota, where he earned a BA in American History. While attending college, he worked about 30 hours each week at the gas station and garage where his father was a mechanic. Orv and wife Marian began dating when set up by a friend of his. This courtship has resulted in 56 years of matrimony, son Bradley, daughter Kathleen, and three grandsons. Two of the interesting hobbies they ve shared over the years are hunting and fishing together. Page 2 of 7
3 With a life-long love of aviation, upon graduating college Orv utilized his ROTC commission to join the Air Force as a 2 nd Lieutenant. First, it was off to basic flight school. He ended up flying the T34, T28, and even the B25. Second, he was sent to Intercept Directors School. Third, he put the intercept training to good use working at a radar site in Chandler, MN. The essence of the job was to sort out the friendly aircraft in the assigned airspace from the potentially unfriendly aircraft. Remember, these were the days when the cold war was quite active! He served in the Air Force Reserve once he left active duty and served in the Minnesota Air National Guard and eventually transferred back to the Air Force Reserve. His ANG unit was activated during the Berlin Crisis of He also had the opportunity to attend and graduate from the Air War College in Montgomery, Alabama. After 30 years of service, Orv retired as a Colonel. In addition to military service, Orv spent about 30 years as a civilian at Honeywell. The first ten years of his time there were devoted to the design and building of avionics for both military and civilian aircraft. The next twenty years found him focused on contracts, marketing, and contract management. He retired from Honeywell as the Defense Systems Division director of contract management. Fun Fact One: Fun Fact Two: Fun Fact Three: Fun Fact Four: Fun Fact Five: Owns a 29 Highboy Roadster (street rod) Enjoys riding his 1978 Yamaha 650 Special motorcycle Has a lifelong haberdashery penchant for wearing leather flying jackets Is a student of WWII, especially the air war He is indeed named after the famous aviator Catching Up With Chandler Last year we were introduced to Chandler Benz in our October Newsletter. In November of 2012, she was diagnosed with a Dark Spot in her brain, which caused her go away or faint. Here is an update submitted by KF6CUE, after a conversation with Chandler s mother. Chandler is doing OK. I cannot say fantastic, as far as seizures go. She had so many side effects from the original meds that they had to switch her prescription over the summer, which is no fun for Chandler. The transition from the old to the new left her very tired, lethargic and overly symptomatic. With the transition complete, she s doing better; however, she s not to the full dosage level yet, as she continues to have small seizures and auras, which drain her. Managing all of this while in college is tough, but she's a fighter and hanging in there. She absolutely LOVES school this year and is only 1.5 semesters from graduating and is classified as a senior! If she dropped her minor, photography, she would be finished by next December. Her mom s thankful that she's been diligent, as her parents still don't even know where next semester's tuition is coming from. This gives God a chance to show off! Upcoming CARF Officers Election You will notice that the last page of this publication is a ballot for the election of our 2015 officers. Please complete your ballot and return to Herb, WA4HJB, postmarked by November 30 th. Page 3 of 7
