PROVERBS 22:28 CRANBERRY BAPTIST CHURCH QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER SPRING 2011 A Good Soldier of Jesus Christ Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. II Timothy 2:1-3 Just a few days ago, one of our Faithful Men, W.C. Nealy Mills, went home to be with the Lord! Brother Mills had just turned 90 on February 8, 2011 and was indeed a Good Soldier of Jesus Christ. Brother Mills came to Cranberry in 1962 and was a faithful member of our church for better than 49 years! In my twenty-one years as pastor here at Cranberry, Brother Mills comes to the top of the list for faithfulness. As a matter of fact, there were very few services that Mr. Mills was not in attendance, right up to the first Sunday in January of this year, when he had his heart attack during the evening service. I had the privilege of ordaining Brother Mills as a deacon in In addition to serving as a deacon, Brother Mills also was a long-term trustee, board member, Sunday School superintendent, usher, teacher and choir member. As an old Army Veteran, this Good Soldier was always at his post of duty! God bless the memory of our dear friend and brother in Christ! We will meet you in heaven! Please pray for his wife, Frances, daughters, Judy, Connie, Regina, and his family! The beginning of 2011 has been a very different year for me and the church with the sickness of Brother Mills and the passing of several of our dear saints over the last few months. The Apostle Paul states, For me to live is Christ, for me to die is gain. He understood what it was to be in a strait betwixt two. In the last part of this text, Paul challenged the church to stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel (Phil. 1:27). This is our theme for May we bind our hearts and minds together, putting aside all of our personal differences for one common goal! It is important to be at our post of duty...and Striving Together for the Faith of the Gospel. I look forward to our Spring Revival with Brother Sam Davison of Heartland Bible College in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. You ve been there before. You get home after a long, hard day of school. Your impatient stomach gets the best of you as you reach into the cabinet and grab your favorite junk food. Ahhh...the perfect reward for studying so hard! A very short time later, Mom has labored to prepare a full, healthy meal just for you. And now, you re not hungry. A little bit of junk food may be okay, but not when it spoils your appetite for real food. Eating junk food is not good for you. But feeding your soul the junk food of this world is worse yet! You see, Satan offers you that which looks most enticing. He plays a dirty game of lies to make you think that the junk food he is offering is what you really need and want. Unfortunately, many teens have believed the lie. Now, they re just not hungry for the Bible any more. They re not hungry for time with Jesus. They're not hungry for church. Have you noticed in yourself maybe recently a diminishing desire to get into the Bible; to be faithful to church? Oh, you used to have an appetite. Where did it go? Could it be you've been filling up on junk food? The Word of God says in I Peter 2:2, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby. The word sincere means real, pure, genuine. In other words, it s not junk food. Teenager, one of the greatest ways to keep your life on track is to be constantly feasting on the Bible. The Lord has so much He wants to say to you. He wants to help you with your problems, guide the decisions you make, be the closest friend possible, and so much more! The God of the universe is extending an invitation to one-on-one time. But don t be so full of the junk of this world that when God wants to use His Word to help you, you come to His table and say, I m not hungry. 3 Master Clubs is an exciting Club program for kids especially designed to teach children how they can serve God now! Master Clubs desires to help you evangelize, teach, train, disciple, and provide opportunities to children in our church from age 3 up to 6 th grade. The 3 rd -6 th grade Master Club kids have been working diligently to prepare for their Regional Competition, which will be held in Blountville, TN on Saturday, April 2. It is such an exciting thing to see children hiding God s Word in their hearts! The Bible truths and Scripture they learn in Master Clubs will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Many of our 3 rd -6 th graders are preparing themselves to present the plan of salvation, teach a Sunday School Lesson, sing, and compete with instrumentals. Please pray for each of our children as they learn to serve the Lord and use the talents that God has given them. Remember, the children of today will be the church of tomorrow. We must do all we can today teaching and training them to serve the Lord. Mark your calendars now for two very special events coming up in the month of June! Vacation Bible School will be June Classes will be held for nursery up through the 6 th grade. This will be a very exciting week that your children will not want to miss with special visitors, games, and prizes for everyone in attendance. Junior Camp week is scheduled for June 20-24, for all children ages We will be going to Mount Moriah Christian Camp in Knoxville, TN. We have already begun registration, so sign up now and get ready for the best week of your entire summer! Ty Thomas The Cranberry Bus Football contest got underway on January 9 th, The bus routes chose their favorite teams and tackled the first week with courage! Each bus route chose their favorite teams as follows: Bus #1 Mt. Hope Eagles Bus #2 East Beckley Steelers Bus #3 North Beckley Titans Bus #4 Stanaford Patriots The routes squared off against each other week after week. The teams earned points by attendance, visitors, as well as the number of bus workers visiting each Saturday. On the final week of the contest it was the Mt. Hope Eagles against the East Beckley Steelers. The 2011 CBF Super Bowl Champion is Bus #1, the Mount Hope Eagles! Congratulations! Special congratulations to Cierra Johnson, who brought the most visitors during the contest. 5 The World Missions Ministry of Cranberry Baptist Church To preach the gospel in the regions beyond II Corinthians 10:16 This year s March for Missions begins on Wednesday, March 2. Several missionaries have made plans to attend our services this month to present their ministries or give updates on their mission fields. Our International Dinner will be held on Sunday, March 27 at 5:00pm at the Woodrow Wilson High School Cafeteria. Missionary tables representing our missionaries will have food samples from countries around the world. The International Dinner has been a favorite for many years here at Cranberry. Ladies of the church have been assigned a missionary and will prepare food from that country s menu. In addition to the wonderful food from the various countries, we will also have the USA Buffet! Our children will once again participate in the Parade of Nations. We will have visitors from every continent as the children dress up in clothing from around the world. After parading around Dr. Don Sisk the cafeteria, the kids will gather into one great choir and show us their enthusiasm for world evangelism! Our keynote speaker is Dr. Don Sisk. Dr. Sisk has been greatly used to rally God s people around the cause of World Missions. Born in Nortonville, Kentucky, he accepted Christ as his Saviour at the age of 16. He and his wife, Virginia, were accepted as missionaries with BIMI in They, along with their children, went to Japan in God used them to establish two churches in Japan: The Senri New Town Baptist Church in Osaka, Japan, and the Grace Baptist Church in Akashi. The Senri New Town Baptist Church is the largest Baptist church in Japan with over 500 in regular attendance. He served as Far Eastern Director of BIMI for 9 years and in 1984 was elected to the position of President/ General Director of Baptist International Missions, Inc. In 2002, he resigned from that position and was designated as President/General Director Emeritus. In addition to our annual Missions Banquet, Dr. Sisk will be our guest speaker on Sunday morning, March 27. Dr. Sisk will teach a combined Sunday School class in the main auditorium and bring the morning message at 11:00am. We also have several other missionaries joining us throughout our March for Missions campaign. Please pray that God will continue to direct us in the missionaries we need to support and your Faith Promise giving! 6 from Missionary Shane Davis to be back in the United States of America will be great. We have been in Canada for almost four years. We look forward to see our families and to report to some of our supporting churches during the trip. It is shaping up to be a whirlwind trip with many stops in Alabama, Tennessee, and West Virginia all within two weeks. We are excited; yet, facing mixed emotions about leaving Hinton Baptist Church, the town, and people we have come to love with deepest sincerity. I am thrilled that my family and I have been given this gift from Cranberry Baptist Church; however, I will be thrilled when we are back home serving the LORD in the field to which He has called us. STATESIDE BOUND! Yes! That s right. The Davis family is heading Stateside in the month of March. It was to my surprise that Pastor Pauley called in December with the offer of a Christmas present for the whole family. The opportunity It's time to make a return trip to Mongolia. As you read this update, I will already be back in Mongolia! We flew from Charleston, WV, February 25th and arrived in Ulaanbaatar, February 28th. We will be returning, March 26th. What a great opportunity to spread God's Good News to those who have by Missionary Jeff Kruchkow never heard! I can't think of a better place for a Gospel Print Shop than in Mongolia an entire country without His Word, Russia to the North and China to the South. WHAT A GREAT OPPORTUNITY! We will be very busy on this trip. We have to replace all the rubber rollers on both printing presses. This will require a large amount of adjusting and readjusting. Also, we need to work on the folding machine. The rollers from both units need to be taken out and reworked. The rest of the time will be spent training the new pressman. Please continue to keep this ministry in your prayers as we continue to do His will! Such a large opportunity to spread God's Word into a part of the world that has very little true Christian influence. Mongolia Upon our return to the states, we will continue to work on the print shop in Sophia, WV. Much progress is being made. We will also be making plans to head to Venezuela this summer to set up a new shop. The plans for this print shop are moving along. Please continue to pray for both of these ministries. Finally, brethren, pray that many souls will come to know the Lord Jesus Christ through the efforts of these Gospel Print Shops! Eddie Gunnoe, one of our young men, and a freshman at Pensacola Christian College, Pensacola, FL, has been selected as a member of the Go Forth Baptist Missions Summer Mission Team to Quebec from June 25-July 9, This team wants to be an encouragement to Missionaries Carl and Marie Bernard while serving in various areas of the ministry such as, Evangelistic Outreaches, tract and Bible distribution, Vacation Bible School, Youth Ministries and Visitation, and all church services. Since this is a missions outreach, it is necessary for Eddie to raise support for his airline ticket, ministry needs, Bibles, tracts, in-country food and accommodations, missionary needs, etc. Cranberry Baptist has donated, from our Regions Beyond Fund, 50% of the $1,550 needed for this missions trip. If you would like to support Eddie in this worthy project, all donations may be made to Cranberry Baptist Church, PO Box 2901, Beckley, WV A group of teenagers from Cranberry Baptist Church will have the privilege of assisting Church Planting Missionaries Dale and Rachel Montgomery. The Savannah River Baptist Church held their first service in the fall of Our young people will be helping with Vacation Bible School and literature distribution. Throughout the spring, our teens will attempt to qualify for this trip by participating in the Second Mile Scholarship Program. Each teen will earn points for being accountable in their Christian walk. Points will be awarded for daily devotions, faithful church attendance, Scripture memory, service to the Lord in their church, and more. Students who earn enough points are selected to be a part of the student team.
