1 Year 43 Issue 1 NEWSLETTER September 2008 Christian Amateur Radio Fellowship This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24 FROM THE DESK OF WB8TLZ, CARF PRESIDENT The Christian Amateur Radio Fellowship September 2008 Greetings; from the troll under the bridge, in the thumb of Michigan, on the banks of the mighty Cass River. Sitting on the top shelf of my desk here in the shack is an EICO 723, sixty watt, CW, crystal controlled transmitter. It was an EICO like this one, back in 1963, that was my first amateur radio transmitter. My Novice call was WN8HXQ. That was a long time ago. I m not sure this transmitter is really functional, but it is great to look at and brings back some fond memories. I also remember looking at the Hammarlund HQ-180 receiver wondering, Would I ever be able to own something like that? Today these old boat anchors have passed into history. The Yaesu, Mark-V, I use today will perform functions not even dreamed of in Amateur Radio has changed. The Christian Amateur Radio Fellowship was formed at the North American Christian Convention during the summer of Gerald Fargusson, W9JSQ, former professor at Lincoln Christian College in Illinois is affectionately known as the grandfather of CARF. The idea behind CARF was that the church should utilize Amateur Radio as a means for missionaries to keep in contact with their support people back in the United States. Missionaries were aided in becoming licensed radio operators and equipment was supplied as needed. Missionary work has changed. The internet, , and cell phones have replaced the need for a missionary to become a licensed Ham radio operator. The need to license missionaries and provide Amateur equipment is not the same as it was in After 42 years both Amateur Radio and the world have changed. The question today is, What should be the focus of the Christian Amateur Radio Fellowship in 2008 and beyond? Or to put it another way, Is there a unique and vital role that Amateur Radio can fill today for God s Kingdom? I hope you will give some serious thought to the question above. I know I have considered this question many times. I am hoping you may have something that you can bring to our attention for consideration. Let s all of us, make the future of CARF a matter of thoughtful prayer as we seek to serve our Lord.
2 PrayerFlight ( PrayerFlight is a group of men and women who have joined forces to pray over our cities, states and nation from the unique perspective of flight. We understand that it is not where we are when we pray but rather the sincerity and fervency of our prayers that God hears and answers. Our dedicated men and women believe that it is from our perspective in flight that allows us the opportunity to observe God's awesome creation and are reminded of our duty to pray for our fellow man, cities and nation. Through our perspective in flight, we desire to spend time in prayer specifically for the city that we are flying over. On days set aside by PrayerFlight, we are attempting to cover entire counties, states and eventually our nation as Prayer Warriors team up with pilots and physically cover an assigned area with prayer. What an awesome thought, to know that individuals are flying overhead while praying for you, your neighbors, schools, government and all aspects of your community. Through our prayers we are beseeching our Lord and Savior to heal our communities and nation. History of PrayerFlight On September 30, 2006 on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, a single airplane, with KB8QXV (Thurm) at the controls, carrying 4 people set off to fly over the City of Lima and Allen County in Ohio. They departed from the Bluffton Airport (5G7) in the northwest portion of Ohio on a mission to pray over the city and county. Returning from their inaugural trip, they felt the urging of our Lord to press on and continue this mission, soon to be named PrayerFlight. A second flight date was set for December 2, 2006 and on November 28th the rain began to fall, continuing through December 1st with high winds and poor visibility. On December 2nd, the group met at the Bluffton Airport for what turned out to be the perfect day to pray and fly. We were thankful that our Lord provided such a wonderful day. With what started out as one airplane and 4 people had now turned into 8 planes, 26 adults and 6 teenagers flying over 7 counties in Ohio, portions of Charleston, West Virginia and the City of Redding, California. The airplanes flew as participants prayed over hospitals, government offices, police, fire, EMS buildings and 26 schools. In addition to focusing prayer over these entities, a secondary goal of PrayerFlight was also met; prayer over those areas involved in moral and social degradation, to include drug dealers, prostitutes, gang members and many others in need of God's touch. After nearly one-hour in the air, the airplanes began to return. All 8 planes returned within 15 minutes of each other and shortly after the final plane landed there was a time of debriefing and Praise to God. One pilot commented that he had never experienced anything quite like this PrayerFlight, while other pilots and prayer warriors commented on the spiritual and emotional impact this flight had on them individually. Several pilots and pray warriors tearfully expressed their enthusiasm, understanding that this was not simply the CARFLetter PAGE 2 September 2008
3 work of men and women but rather the Spirit of God moving on His people to pray and seek the Will of God in our cities, states and country. 4 We hear quite a bit about Lynn and his adventures out in the woods looking for the elusive turkey. Sometimes even Lynn gets lucky. Tom Chamberlin, WD8OZI, paid a visit to Lynn s QTH while in Kentucky working on a missionary orientation. Check out this bad boy. He weighed 19lbs.. That is two more pounds than the one I caught two weeks ago. He is looking straight at the camera, but I don t think that was a smile on his face. {;9) You see that sign language for the letter L I am making with my left hand? That stands for LARGE. He felt like a big water melon. He grew this big in three years. He sure appreciated it when I let him go in the large pond in the back. In fact we have some grass starting to grow in that pond, and between the two of them, it is all but gone already. If this don t bust your gut, it just takes too much to entertain you. Ralph, KU4WR, caught this on August 11, 2008 CARFLetter PAGE 4 September 2008
5 Thur., Aug. 7 Greetings from hot and humid New Orleans, where I'm with a group from church preparing and serving meals to volunteers working on homes as part of Southern Baptist's participation in "Operation N.O.A.H." (New Orleans Affordable Housing). After rising at 4:30 each morning to prepare and serve breakfast, we have some time free during the day before preparing and serving an evening meal. Each night our group gathers for devotional time, but we also had time to visit the French Quarter, and the Tabasco store there (AHHHHHHHH!!!). Thanks for your continued prayer support.
