Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Stephen Chervenak passed away on August 22, 2016 and Joseph Stavor passed away on August 26, Our condolences and prayers go out to both the Chervenak and Stavor families. May there souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Just a reminder that our Council #4210 Business Meeting will be held on the second and fourth Monday's. The Rosary will be recited at 7:15 PM and the meeting will begin promptly at 7:30 PM. Council News Our council has a new Chaplain Father Gregory Madeya, Pastor of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Byzantine Catholic Parish, located at 1007 Eden Park Blvd., McKeesport, PA has accepted to be our Chaplain for Council Father Greg has his Admissions (1 st ) Degree, and is transferring to our council where he would like to take his Formation (2nd) Degree, Knighthood (3rd) Degree and the Patriotic (4th) Degree. Father Greg has been the pastor at St. John's since Prior to that, he served as deacon in both the Roman Catholic and Byzantine Catholic Rites. He is also the pastor at St. Demetrius in Jeannette. Father Greg enjoys traveling and hanging out with his best friend, his cute puppy, Bernadette. Father Greg will begin as chaplain at our September 12th Business and Installation of Officers. Please note that John the Baptist Ukrainian Byzantine Catholic Church has the best Pieogies. They also have Homemade Soup, Halushki, Stuffed Cabbage, and more. If you would like to order some the number is (412) Duquesne / West Mifflin Council 4210 Recognizes Brother Patrick O'Leary as the August KNIGHT OF THE MONTH Council #4210 will provide beverages, light meal, and snacks after our meeting! Please plan on attending K of C Football Sweepstakes Brothers, we received this year s K of C Football Sweepstakes tickets and we only have till early October to sell them. I have asked George Wagner to chair this year s K of C Football

Tickets will be available at the September meetings, or from George Wagner September Food for Families Update Food for Families effort continues on thanks to the generosity of the council. We have approximately 521 pounds of food collected to date toward the goal of 1000 pounds. Nursing Home Bingo September 15 Each month the council will run bingo ten games for the seniors at the Locust Grove Nursing Center. Brothers and their families are encouraged to meet on third Thursdays of each month at 6:15pm to help out. We are usually finished by 7:30pm. What a wonderful opportunity to give the most valuable gift your time and love. Call Tom Smith at (412) to volunteer. End of Summer Hawaiian Luau Dinner Dance, August 17 Doors open at 6:30 PM -- dinner served at 7:15 PM -- and goes till 10:00 PM. Prize for Tackiest Hawaiian Shirt Contest! (See if you can beat out Andy Haley!) Hula Hoop Contest! Guests will duel it out in pairs to see who can keep the hula hoop up the longest. Big Kahuna, playing your favorite Oldies and some favorite Hawaiian songs. Please attend! Part of the proceeds go toward Coat for Kids. RSVP to Tom Smith at (412) Grand Knight s Message Let s not forget September 11th. Many innocent men, women, and children died when terrorists attacked America. As I reflect back on that day, I remember many feelings including sorrow and anger. I also remember the first responders that risked their lives to help those in need. Just a friendly reminder to keep recruiting in our thoughts. Bringing in new members enhances our ability to strengthen our participation in all service areas. Brother Gary Hawthorne will provide dates for membership drives/coffee & donuts. If you have someone in mind, reach out to him and share our Council s accomplishments. Vivat Jesus! Brother Tim Financial Secretary Report I hope our active members are enjoying the warm Summer this year and have had a good vacation before Summer comes to an end. In concert with the wishes of Supreme, and the intentions of our Grand Knight, we will be recruiting for new members primarily in the Fall and Spring of this year and next. Membership Director Gary Hawthorn said in the August News and Views that we are seeking 14 new members for this Fraternal year. Let s do what we can to accomplish that goal. If you have questions about recruiting, ask myself or Gary. Vivat Jesus. John Hostovich Brother Knights, Special Thanks to Brother Thomas Smith for starting our first End of Summer Hawaiian Luau Dinner Dance at Holy Trinity Hall. I look forward to working with all my brother knights to support our upcoming events so that we can continue to execute our mission. Labor Day is not just a holiday where we don t have to go to work. It s a day to remember all of the workers that made this country so great. This includes Labor unions, Companies that employ workers, management, individual businesses,and inventors. Brother Knights, HELP IS NEEDED! We have kicked off the year with some great programs, but participation has been very limited. I will report on the events of the last month and ask for your help in the upcoming month. We have started our participation with the Food Bank of Greater Pittsburgh. In August only two Brother Knights, one wife and one daughter participated. We helped serve over 500 families in the Produce for People program in August. We need better participation in September! We report at 4:30 and are done by 7:00 PM. Our next volunteer date is September 8. Hope to see you there! 2

3 On August 25 we started our monthly BINGO at the Locust Grove Senior Home. We arrived at 6:00 PM and were done at 7:30 PM. There were 16 women and 1 man who played BINGO. They had a great time and were very appreciative of our being there. The most popular prize was Kleenex (surprise surprise). Once again our Grand Knight, his daughter and I were the only Brother Knights attending. This is a very easy hour and a half to do and the people have very little to look forward to. At the end of the BINGO there were many thanks and hugs to go around. Maybe you can help next month on September 15? September is a very busy month. Tim and I will attend the Pittsburgh Chapter Meeting at Duquesne University on the 6th. We have found that keeping up with what the other Councils are doing is a great source of ideas, but very frustrating as we keep asking "Why can't we do that?" We will also be attending the kick-off of the Bishop's Project at the new council home is Bentleyville on the 7th. The 8th is the food bank and the 11th is the Blue Mass. We expect this to be a well attended event this year, especially falling on I am doing breakfast and we are inviting the parish to attend the breakfast. I need one or two assistant to come early and help prepare the meal. Can you help me? The 12th is our installation of the new officers including our new Chaplain, Fr. Greg Madeya. Fr. Greg has two churches under his care but has graciously agreed to serve as our Chaplain. He has already proposed some great ideas to build the Council spiritually. We welcome him with open arms! And yes, more food after the meeting. The 14th is a banner day as I will turn 65 and go on Medicare! Lower Rx costs! The 15th is the Locust Grove BINGO. The weekend masses (September 17th and 18th) are the Coats for Kids collection at all churches. But our big event of the month is the Hawaiian Luau on Saturday the 17th! Great food is planned, a tackiest Hawaiian Shirt Contest and a Hula Hoop Contest along with dancing. So Brother Knights, throw a grass skirt on the significant other and drag her down for a fun knight (pun intended)! In fact, why not put together a table? I do need help that day cooking the Polynesian treats. Anyone who can help? And of course we cap off the September program on the 20th with our final Car Show of the season. Grand Knight Tim has put together a great program to continue building this summer event. Volunteers are needed in many areas to help. We even have some sit-down jobs so no excuses! Vivat Jesus! I wonder who that could be? Jesus' is constantly teaching us to trust him. Stop living in fear, stop worrying. Fear and worry are of this world, not of His Kingdom. Trust in him at all times. Yet, trust from the eternal perspective, trust that his mission is to bring us salvation, not riches. Trust that his mission is to bring us into his kingdom, not make us kings in this world. Trust, trust, trust. It is the hardest thing to do. Too many of us are focused on what we think God should do in response to our problems, instead of what God should actually do in response to our problems. Trust, Trust, Trust. That is the role of the Christian. If you look at the Divine Mercy Image you will see the words Jesus I Trust In You we must learn to TRUST in him. Amen. Pat O'Leary Our Principles & Values All of the good works that we do in the Knights of Columbus are centered around the four core principles that make our Brotherhood the strong and respected fraternal organization that is world renown for doing good deeds for others. The 4 principles we live by are: Charity Unity Fraternity Patriotism Our Catholic faith teaches us to Love thy neighbor as thyself. Members of the Knights of Columbus show love for their neighbors by conducting food drives and donating the food to local soup kitchens and food pantries, by volunteering at Special Olympics, and by supporting, both spiritually and materially, mothers who choose life for their babies. Knights recognize that our mission, and our faith in God, compels us to action. There is no better way to experience love and compassion than by helping those in need, a call we answer every day! Experience the wonderful feeling of Giving Back. 4 Volunteers Needed The Annual Bishop's of Pittsburgh Intellectual Disabilities Drive is about to start and all that is missing is you. On Bishop's Project Store Collection Friday October 21 st, Saturday, October September 22 nd we will be out at the Sam's Club, and Wal Mart collecting funds for these Special Needs Children. Come hang out with us, bring the kids and support one of the best causes we Knights support. This is a Regional - wide mission and we donate 100% of the funds locally. For more info, contact: Tom Smith at (412) or tfs1951@aol.com September Pro Life Report Brothers, Please consider joining us for our first monthly Respect Life Rosary in Our Meeting Chamber, Holy Trinity Rectory (downstairs) On September 26. The 40 Days for Life campaign will commence on September 23. This would be a great kick-off to that. MORE ABOUT PLANNED PARENTHOOD AND THE CENTER FOR MEDICAL PROGRESS: The Center for Medical Progress has so far released seven videos of the twelve they say they have. The revelations are more dramatic and disturbing with each release. I won't rehash the gruesome details here but I encourage you to become aware of what goes on in taxpayersupported Planned Parenthood. Log on to the Center for Medical Progress and read the full transcripts. As you read, you will be convinced, as I am that these people are breaking Federal laws. It is against the law to sell parts of unborn babies for profit. It is against the law to alter the abortion based on whether or not the mother has consented to donate "fetal tissue" (we call them body parts). As to profit, several of the PP senior personnel have noted that they are not allowed to make a profit but they are not above making some profit. One doctor expressed interest is dealing in separate parts as opposed to selling an entire intact specimen. They could realize

5 greater return dealing in parts. As to changing abortion procedures,, not a problem for PP. If a woman consents to donating "tissue" they will not administer dioxin or potassium chloride to kill the baby before delivery. Either of these two will "nuke the stem cells" and render them useless for research. They can't sell "nuked stem cells". They need healthy, fresh cells. The fresher the better. How much 'fresher' can you get than cells from a newly delivered 20 to 24 week-old baby with a beating heart? That's where we are by the seventh video. A procurement technician working in a PP facility for Stem Express in California tells us how she assisted a PP doctor acquire a brain from a baby with a beating heart. The doctor instructed her to use scissors and start cutting from the mouth up. The only way anyone with a soul can continue to support PP is to remain ignorant of the chaos around them. Can you say Holocaust? The Gulags? Chinese Reeducation camps? Cambodia? Rwanda? Slaughtered Christians in the Middle East? WHAT DIFFERENCE CAN YOU MAKE? Brothers, find out what is going on around you. Pray our nation will experience a turn-around. Do just ONE MORE THING this year in support of human life from conception to death than you did last year. Contact those who are supposed represent us and govern our country. That number is Consider spending an hour a week or whatever you can spare to stand in prayer and peaceful witness in front of Planned Parenthood, York, during the 40 Days for Life Campaign (Sep 23 through Nov 1). Life is Good! Raising Awareness About Life Insurance Each September since 2003 has been designated as Life Insurance Awareness Month. Like most awareness-raising campaigns, Life Insurance Awareness Month was created because there is an overwhelming lack of understanding of life insurance, its uses, its benefits, and its variations among the general public. Each year, the Life Insurance Market 5 Research Association (LIMRA) puts out the results from a recent survey, and unfortunately, the numbers they report continue to be discouraging. A recent survey found that more than 75 percent of people polled did not have a personal financial advisor, even though 68 percent of them said their opinion of the current economic conditions was somewhat unfavorable or very unfavorable. In other words, a majority of those surveyed were uncomfortable with the economy and the uncertainty it brings, yet they did not seek professional assistance. Maybe they spoke with their friends and family. Maybe they hoped the instability would go away on its own. Maybe they did not know to whom to turn. If you fall into this category, please remember that as a member of the Knights of Columbus, you have a full-time, professional agent you can call your own. My primary responsibility is the care and service of your family s life insurance, retirement and long-term care needs. I ll answer your questions because I want your decisions to be informed ones. I want to help. Another LIMRA statistic said 43 percent of people did not buy life insurance because they worry about making the wrong decision. Talk with me, your agent, and, afterwards, you ll understand that the only wrong decision was not purchasing sooner to protect your family s future.
