4 That day I saw beneath dark clouds the passing light over the water and I heard the voice of the world speak out, I knew then, as I had before life is no passing memory of what has been nor the remaining pages in a great book waiting to be read.

5 It is the opening of eyes long closed. It is the vision of far off things seen for the silence they hold. It is the heart after years of secret conversing speaking out loud in the clear air.

18 One: Friends, we have every reason to hope. The possibilities for how the church will change are limitless. God will guide us in ever new ways. All: We are open and we are willing to be the church for a new day.

19 One: Those who have gone before us inspire us by their faithful example and encourage us to live creatively and boldly for God. All: We are open and we are willing to be the church for a new day.

20 One: Our broken and hurting world begs us to be an authentic witness for Christ, to break ourselves open with love and grace wherever a need is known. All: We are open and we are willing to be the church for a new day.

21 One: May we see more clearly and respond more wisely as the winds of change caress and even buffet us. All: We are open and we are willing to be the church for a new day.

22 One: Let us lift our confusions and our fears and our hesitations to God and ask that we might be transformed into a people of astonishing possibility and hope. All: We are open and we are willing to be the church for a new day.

23 One: If we are open and if we are willing, then may we act boldly and bravely and with joy. All: In confidence and in hope, and in gratitude, we lift ourselves to the light of change.

24 One: May the One who is our light so brighten our hearts and our spirits that we are filled with wonder at what it means to be the church. All: We are open and we are willing to be the church for a new day.

25 All: And so we pray, lift us, O Christ, to your light, to the light that transforms us all, to the light of change. Amen.

47 Genesis 9: 12-17, NRSV God said, This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.

48 When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.

49 When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth. God said to Noah, This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.

54 Matthew 20:1 16, NRSV For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard.

55 When he went out about nine o clock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace; and he said to them, You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right. So they went.

56 When he went out again about noon and about three o clock, he did the same. And about five o clock he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, Why are you standing here idle all day?

57 They said to him, Because no one has hired us. He said to them, You also go into the vineyard. When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, Call the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to the first.

58 When those hired about five o clock came, each of them received the usual daily wage. Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received the usual daily wage.

59 And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, saying, These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.

60 But he replied to one of them, Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous? So the last will be first, and the first will be last.
