PRELUDE Please remain seated during the processional. WELCOME Opening Hymn: Jesus Calls Us Here To Meet Him Please stand as able. 2
OPENING SENTENCES Please remain standing as able. The God of love is with us. The Spirit of love is in us. Blessed is the Holy Spirit, the breath of God. Let the winds and all creation praise you. OPENING PRAYER The Lord of the four winds be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Almighty and eternal God, to you our hearts are open and our inmost desires known. We cannot hide our most intimate secrets from you. Be present at all times in our thoughts and hearts and purify them with your Holy Spirit, so that we may love you with the love of the Spirit and praise your name with humility and joy. Holy Spirit, giver of life, creative breath of God through whom this world was breathed into existence and is sustained; blow with power and wisdom through our lives and infuse us with your indwelling, that we may be empowered and open to bring your kingdom to earth; through Christ our Lord. Amen. HYMN OF PRAISE 3
Collects for the Day Please remain standing as able. God breathes life into creation. Let us praise the God of breath, of all creation! O God, our Strength, We praise you for your power. O God, our Shield, We praise you for your protection. O God, our Comfort, We praise you for your solace. O God, our Inspiration, We praise you for your renewal. O God, our Life, We praise you for your grace. O God of all, We praise you for your love. Glory to the God of all! Glory forever! Amen. Please be seated for the readings. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD First Lesson Daniel 7:9-10, As I watched, thrones were set in place, and an Ancient One took his throne, his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames, and its wheels were burning fire. A stream of fire issued and flowed out from his presence. A thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood attending him. The court sat in judgment, and the books were opened. As I watched in the night visions, I saw one like a human being coming with the clouds of heaven. And he came to the Ancient One and was presented before him. To him was given dominion and glory and kingship, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not pass away, and his kingship is one that shall never be destroyed. 4
Reader The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 93 (Refrain sung first by cantor, then by all) The Epistle Revelation 1:4b-8 Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Look! He is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be. Amen. I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. Reader The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please stand as able for the reading of the gospel. Gospel John 18:33-37 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. 5
Glory to you, Lord Christ. Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, Are you the King of the Jews? Jesus answered, Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me? Pilate replied, I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done? Jesus answered, My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here. Pilate asked him, So you are a king? Jesus answered, You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Please be seated. Homily The Reverend Mark McKone-Sweet Please stand as able. 6
AN AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Let us join in affirming our faith in God. Our God is the God of all humanity, of heaven and earth, of the seas and the rivers, of the sun and the moon, and all the stars, God of the highest mountains and of the lowest valleys, over heaven, in heaven, and under heaven. God is present in all things in heaven and earth and seas, inspires all things, brings life to all things, is over all things and supports all things. God makes the light of the sun to shine, and surrounds the moon and stars, brings water to the deserts and places dry islands in the sea. God s Son lives as God lives, eternal and holy. The Holy Spirit breathes in the Father and the Son, and the Holy Spirit lives in God the Christ. And God is forever. Amen. PRAYERS FOR OURSELVES AND OTHERS 1 Intercessor Let us turn our awareness to the Presence of the Divine that is always with us and always within us. Silence Intercessor Let us bring before God all of those people and situations that are in any kind of need. We pray especially for We invite you to add your own intercessions aloud. Intercessor Let us ask God to use our prayerful intentions for the benefit of all who are in this room with us now, people we know and love, as well as people who are strangers to us. May we be blessings to one another. 1 From Celtic Service Notebook, St. Stephen s Episcopal Church, Richmond, Virginia, p. 7. 7
We invite you to add your own intercessions aloud. Intercessor Let us call to mind our reasons to be thankful, as we remember our abundance and the life-giving way of gratitude. We invite you to add your own intercessions aloud. May God still our minds, calm our hearts, breathe fresh life into us, and make us instruments of peace, justice, and compassion. Amen. CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Please remain standing or kneel as able. We gather together in search of wholeness, but our brokenness separates us from God and from one another. Let us confess our sin against God and our neighbor. Silence Almighty God, You love us, but we have not loved you. You call, but we have not listened. We walk away from neighbors in need, wrapped in our own concerns. We condone evil, prejudice, warfare, and greed. God of grace, help us to admit our sin, so that we may repent, turn to you, and receive forgiveness, through Jesus Christ our Redeemer. Amen. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy on you and set you free from sin, strengthen you in goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. SHARING THE PEACE Please stand as able. God makes peace within us Let us claim it. God makes peace between us Let us share it. 8
After sharing the peace with one another, please be seated. Offertory Music THE HOLY COMMUNION Please stand as able. Doxology: Old Hundredth Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. Eucharistic Prayer The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. We offer you praise and hearts lifted high, O God. You breathe into us your Spirit, and by the blowing of the gentle breeze, you remind us of the constancy of your loving presence. Your glory is in the breath of each created thing, and through your creation we see the holiness and wonder of your being. And so with all the hosts of heaven and earth, with the wind that howls and the gentle breeze that soothes, we join in the praises of your unending greatness: 9
Sanctus Blessed are you, O God, for the great day of salvation prepared from the beginning of the world, when Christ, though rejected on earth, will be seen by all to be chosen and precious in your sight. We bless you for Christ who carried sin s destructive powers to the cross that all people might be set free. Through Christ you inspire in us the hope that earth s forces of darkness will be scattered, and angels of glory and principalities of light will bring a new heaven and a new earth. Just as prophets long before Christ had spoken of the sufferings that would be his, so Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and having blessed it, he broke the bread, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is broken for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way he took wine, and having given thanks for it, he gave the cup to his disciples saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. 10
Remembering his eternal self-giving, we proclaim the mystery of Christ among us. Made one with him and one with each other, we offer these gifts and with them ourselves, a single, holy living sacrifice. Bless us with your Holy Spirit, O God, and bless this bread and this wine, that through them we may be made strong again with the strength that only you supply. May our inner selves be nourished that in the outward things of life we may follow the way of Christ and grow more and more into salvation; through Christ, by whom, with whom and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, almighty God, world without end. Amen. The Lord s Prayer All As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread All The Bread of heaven is broken for the life of the world. The Cup of love is shared with all who seek God. Amen. 11
Lamb of God Following the s invitation to communion, please be seated. Communion Hymn: Christ Be Beside Me 12
Prayer after Communion Please remain seated or kneel as able. All Let us pray. O God, in love you have called us to be your people and in love you have given us this bread and wine; may this holy meal refresh us as a gentle and steady breeze, that renewed in your Holy Spirit, we may go forth into the world to serve your people; in the name of God, who is Love. Amen. ANNOUNCEMENTS 13
All BLESSINGS OF BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES Watch over your children, O Lord, as their days increase; bless and guide them wherever they may be. Strengthen them when they stand; comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall; and in their hearts may your peace which passes understanding abide all the days of their lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Please stand as able. Blessing All The power and peace of the Presence protect you. The grace and goodness of the saints inspire you. The good and gracious God go with you and keep you always. And the blessing of God almighty, Father, Son and Holy Spirit be with you now and for ever. Amen. Closing Hymn: Here I Am, Lord (see next page) Dismissal Let us go forth into the world rejoicing in the power of the Spirit. Thanks be to God. The congregation is invited to remain in prayer during the postlude, or leave in silence. 14

Welcome! We re glad you re here! If you are a newcomer, please introduce yourself, ask questions, and participate fully in today s worship. We invite you to sign the guest book located at the entrance to the church. May this time be filled with blessings for you! Celtic Christianity 2 The early Christian tradition in the British Isles developed separately from the rest of Europe. The peoples known as the Celts came to these islands from the continent with their own form of pagan religion and over the first through fifth centuries were converted to Christianity first through Roman conquest of southern England and then through gradual expansion into Scotland and Ireland. As in many places, local pagan practices were assimilated into Christian worship, but the geographic isolation of the islands and the strong and independent monastic presence preserved many distinct traditions for a longer time both in religious observance and through poetry and song even after the official suppression of Celtic ritual in the late seventh century. The late 19 th and 20 th centuries saw a revival of interest in early forms of Christian practice and theology. The Celtic tradition, for one, is distinct for its special attention to the presence of the divine in the physical world. It recognizes the goodness and holiness of all creation, from the human to the material, and also places special emphasis on holy geography, thin places in the natural world, where the border between the spiritual and the physical is particularly fine. Our liturgy draws on texts from different sources infused with this tradition, highlighting the balance in creation between light and darkness, silence and sound, word and song, listening and response. This contemplative service explores prayers and simple music that acknowledge our rootedness in the earth and the inherent goodness of our own creation as well as the Spirit s prophetic voice calling us. This liturgy has been authorized for use at St. Bartholomew s Episcopal Church, Poway, California for Saturday evening worship during the Season after Pentecost by the Bishop of San Diego. Please silence your mobile phone. Thank you. 2 Source: Elizabeth Lovett Grover, A Celtic Liturgy for Every Season. (West Conshohocken, PA: Infinity Publishing, 2013) 16
