1 January 2019 Newsletter Kathwood Baptist Church Published: December 20, 2018 Entering 2019 with Great Thanksgiving By: Beth McConnell 2018 has been an excellent year at Kathwood. We have seen new people join our family of faith. We have watched our children and youth grow in their knowledge and understanding of God. We have worshiped together and experienced the presence of the Holy Spirit among us. We have cared for each other in good days and difficult days. We have upgraded our building and property. We have financially supported the missions and ministries of our congregation. And the list goes on! There is so much we look back on and celebrate! But now is the time to look forward forward into a new year and new possibilities. Let us pray that we will be receptive to God s guidance for this new year. Pray specifically that God will guide new people to Kathwood and Kathwood to new people! In other words, we want to be an active congregation in our community and world. We want to intersect with others and offer them the love and grace that we have been offered by God and within our family of faith. Some of our traditional ways we will continue. We will worship together on mornings. We will study the Bible in School. Many of our committees and teams will continue to do good work but, we also need to be open to God guiding us into a new day. That s what healthy churches do. Living requires continued growth and change that is purposeful and Spirit-led. So I ask that you pray for this. It is with thanksgiving that we welcome our new lay-leadership for These individuals have agreed to serve as officers, committee chairs, Leadership Council members, and Deacons. Each person is stepping up to lead us this year. I am grateful for their willingness to serve and their commitment to the hard work of discerning where God is leading us in There are many others teaching School, Missions, and Choirs; cooking meals, visiting the sick, preparing Narthex Fellowship, loving our children in Extended Session, working on the grounds, faithfully tithing, praying for Kathwood, etc. who have investment in Kathwood for 2019.For each and every person let us give thanks! Every single person at Kathwood is important to the life and ministry of our congregation. 4 Page 4 January 2019 Newsletter Missions Update Mission Giving Tree Thank you so much for your December gifts to the Mission Giving Tree. Our donations will be sent to CBF missionary, Nell Green and her daughter who manage Threads by Nomad Mission in Houston, TX. We have received $ as of 12/20/18 and we will still collect through the end of December. This money will be used to help approved entry refugees in the U.S. and provide for them to sell their creations. Thank you for the blessing you will be to these people and their families. Missions Opportunity We will have a Warmth Drive during January. Please donate new or gently used coats, sweaters, gloves, mittens, and hats. They will be shared with Transitions, Cooperative Ministries, or where the greatest need exists at the time of delivery. Collection sites will be in the Narthex and at the Missions Corner downstairs. New Word for 2019: Enneagram by: Beth McConnell Actually, you may have heard this word before. It s very old and filled with wisdom. Wisdom about you!! Do not miss this opportunity to learn about yourself and how God has specially created your personality. Now it is time for each of us to understand our personality and determine how we use that personality. It is amazing how we live better when we understand ourselves better. Whether young or older, this is a very helpful and interesting study. You will learn about others as well. Every relationship is colored by not only the 2 personalities involved, but also by the way those personalities interact. FUN to think about! HELPFUL for living with others. Isaac has been part of our church family since he was a small child. Making the decision to join marks an important decision in faith and commitment. Join me in congratulating Isaac and rejoicing that he has taken this step. Living with his family in the Irmo area, Isaac has been active in our youth and music ministries. He has faithfully been with us on mission trips, music festivals, and Montreat weeks. He is an accomplished trumpet player, and you will often see him practicing at a piano when he has even a few moments free around church. Isaac enjoys singing and is part of the Chancel Choir here at Kathwood. At the Youth Festival by the Sea the last few years, Isaac surprised us by singing tenor instead of his usual bass. When asked why, he responded that it was more challenging to sing the unfamiliar part and therefore more fun. And books I don t think Isaac goes anywhere without a few books with him. You never know what he might be reading, but the subjects are always deep and thoughtful. Certainly we are affirmed as a congregation to have Isaac formally request membership among us. We value his love for knowledge and musical challenge. Welcome to this spiritually deep and thoughtful young man! Your commitment and generosity enable us to better plan and carry out all the ministries that keep Kathwood running and impacting the world God calls us to serve has been a wonderful year! We hope to end on a strong note and move into 2019 ready to do missions and ministry together.
