Grand Knight s Report (GK Chris Craney): Worthy Brothers All, Brothers welcome and I thank you for coming out and joining us for tonight s meeting. Two important dates have passed since our last meeting. The first is the Knights of Columbus had its 131 st birthday on March 29, Founder s Day. Secondly, we have a new Pope. Pope Francis was introduced to us on March 13 th. I think it is cool, maybe not the right word, that the early day of Francis tenure as the leader of the Catholic Church, he has focused on helping the poor and serving those who need help. It seems to me that he could just as well be talking about charity, our most important virtue. Let s all pay close attention to Francis and make sure we as Knights are following his lead, it can only help us to be a better council but more importantly, better Catholic gentlemen. Gentlemen, tonight our worthy trustees will present the slate of officers for the coming fraternal year. I will say this one more time, if you are a third degree member and are interested in being an officer, please see one of the trustees after tonight s meeting. It is not too late. We have two important events coming up this month. The first is this Sunday, April 14 th. Membership Director Bruce Meyer is leading another membership drive, more from Bruce later. The second, and in my humble opinion, an event we should all be supporting is the April 20 th Saturday evening mass here at St. Bernadette s whose intention will be for deceased council members or members of their families. Gentlemen it is important we show our respect to the widows and brothers who have lost their loved ones. An has gone out to the council with details of the mass and the dinner to follow, please support this most worthy event. Last item to discuss, it is time to wrap up the state raffle ticket sales. Brothers Raul and Sonny have done an awesome job, please buy and/or return any tickets you may still have. Vivat Jesus 12. Chaplain s Report (Fr. Robert Staley): Two quick things; just a reminder that Easter in the Catholic faith is not just a day, it s a whole season. It s the longest and most important liturgical season and I encourage us just sort of mentally thinking, spiritually, doing events and things to think about celebration of the risen Lord. Christ is Risen, new life, great things are possible because life has triumphed over death. When we do council activities, it s not just that this is a spring event at this time, it s also what, an Easter event! The other quick thing I wanted to mention is that I have perceived a great improvement in our council and wanted to thank everyone for it. Compared to a few years ago, Page 2 of 13

we did a lot of events back then, we do a lot of events now; we did a good job back then, we do a good job now; what difference do I see? I see a lot more friendliness and fraternity. Not that there wasn t any back then, of course there was, but I ve noticed it s more than just a few guys now. I ve noticed people talking with each other and enjoying each other s company more and more than just hello, real talking, supporting each other in friendship and fraternity. I think it s awesome and I think we should continue it s not an official program, but it is one of the most important things we can do as a council. 13. Treasurer s Report (Bro. Bob Mayen): The current bank balance as of March 31, 2013 is $17, See Addendum for more details regarding the March 2013 report. 14. Reading by Grand Knight of Receipts of Treasurer to Financial Secretary: Receipts See attachment to these minutes. 15. Reading of Bills and Communications: Bills (Warrants from Financial Secretary to Treasurer) See attachment to these minutes. Communications Summary below, please see attachments to these minutes. Thank You card from Julianne Peters, winner of the Essay Contest. 16. Financial Secretary s Report (GK Chris Craney for Bro. Jim Ryals): We currently have 143 Associate Members, 64 Insurance Members and 4 Inactive Insurance Members for a total of 211 members. Included in the total are 3 Honorary members and 14 Honorary Life members. Year-to-date we ve had 18 Associate Member gains and 2 losses and we ve had a loss of 2 Insurance Members and a gain of 1. Our Fraternal Year membership quota is 13 new Associate members and 5 new Insurance members. 17. Report of Auditors and Trustees: Bro. Mark Leuver reported that the Worthy FS report has been received and all is in order. 18. Chancellor s Report of Vocations (Bro. Sonny Butler): 500 tickets for the State Raffle were issued to our council. To date, 334 have been sold, which beats the previous record that s the good news. The bad news is that there are still 166 outstanding. If you have any tickets, and don t plan on purchasing them, please return them to any officer as soon as possible as we need to reconcile them! 19. Report of Service Program Committees (DGK Bill Barry): Culture of Life (DGK Bill Barry for Bro. Mike Mroz): Reminder that volunteers are needed to help distribute prayer cards following mass on April 20 th & 21 st. Council (Bro. Al Munno): Bingo: Bingo is doing very well. Attendance continues to increase. We have purchased another Bingo machine for backup purposes for $950 (a great price thanks to Pete Majewski). Building Committee: Meeting scheduled for tomorrow night with plans to present again at next month s Business meeting. Page 3 of 13

Divine Mercy: I can t thank everyone enough for the success of the Divine Mercy this past Sunday. Special thanks to Fr. Robert for bringing in the people with his efforts from the pulpit he knows how to sell! We had 238 people attend and are looking forward to this becoming an annual event in our parish. Family (Bro. Daniel Walters): Attending a Durham Bulls game is being planned for Saturday, May 18 th with ticket price of only $9.00. If attending, please consider visiting Rita s Italian Ice at the ballpark, now being run by Bro. Gary Sitzler of Apex council. Youth (Bro. Jim Burke): Free Throw Contest: Due to a scheduling conflict, only one of our two contestants was able to participate in the championship of the Free Throw Contest and they did not win. Tony Zoldos Memorial Scholarship: The announcement was in the bulletin a couple weeks ago. We have had a couple of inquiries, but no essays have been received yet. Community (Bro. Rich Pupi): Special Olympics: Scheduled for Saturday, June 1 st at Triangle Aquatic Center looking for anyone with experience in timing swimming events. More details will be included in an upcoming . Really looking forward to a great showing by our council. Membership (Bro. Bruce Meyer): Membership Drive scheduled for this Sunday with donuts, coffee and juice. Please stop by and help answer any questions members of the parish may have, and as Fr. Robert said earlier, I d like to show the parish not only what we re all about, but how friendly we are as well as thank them for supporting all our efforts. If anyone is willing to be in regalia, that would be terrific. Church (Bro. David Gray): Omitted. 20. Report of Standing Committees: LAMB (DGK Bill Barry for Bro. Rich Bodnar): In process of contacting 2 Wal-Marts and Kroger to set up arrangements for the fall tootsie roll drive. Blood Drives (Bro. Dave Dillman): 23 days left to sign up for the May 2 nd drive. You can sign up on the website. Pancake Breakfasts (Bro. Jim O Donnell): The next Pancake Breakfast is scheduled for Mother s Day, June 9 th. Mother s eat for free! 21. Unfinished Business: None. 22. New Business: Bro. Jim O Donnell presented the following Slate of Officers for the next Fraternal Year to the Council. If a Brother is interested in an Officer position, he can still speak to Bros. Jim, Mark Leuver or Steve Raedy. Page 4 of 13

Grand Knight Bill Barry Deputy Grand Knight Sonny Butler Chancellor Nick Longo Advocate Tony Perna Warden Jim Burke Inside Guard Lou Mennona Outside Guard Robert Langendoerfer Treasurer Bob Mayen Recorder Chris Eby 3 Year Trustee Chris Craney 2 Year Trustee Steve Raedy 1 Year Trustee Mark Leuver A motion was made by Bro. Jim O Donnell and seconded by GK Chris Craney to approve the slate of officers and then table until the next Business meeting in May. Motion was passed by unanimous verbal consent. A motion was made by Bro. Jim O Donnell and seconded by Sonny Butler to allocate 20% of the Council s half of Bingo proceeds to establish a capital fund. Motion was passed by unanimous verbal consent. 23. Report of the Fourth Degree: SK Tony Perna asked that any Sir Knights with regalia that can participate in this Sunday s membership drive, please do so. DGK Bill Barry reported that there s an upcoming Fourth Degree in Charlotte on May 9 th. 24. Insurance Field Agent s Report (Bro. Michael O Rourke): Congratulations to your Membership Director on doing a great job you guys have been doing a good job getting new members in, the other part of that lies on my shoulders. I had a benefits night last night and some in attendance were surprised to learn that mine is a full time job. I m happy to tell you that I work around the clock for you guys. The other thing many may not know about Field Agents is the amount of service we provide. Many may think of us as salespeople based on the insurance products we deal with. I have roughly 1000 members across all the councils I support with an average family size of about 4. That s 4000 people in my charge. An acceptable goal would be to write 50 policies a year, which comes to about 1.25%. A great job would be to write 100 policies a year, or 2.5% - bottom line, when I come to talk to you, there s about a 97% chance that you re not going to purchase anything. The reason for mentioning those numbers is to explain the amount of education and assistance provided without the need to reach for your checkbook. Annuities are an easy way to help your council get to Star status and can be had for as little as $300 ($100 for 1 st year members). This being April, taxes are on a lot of people s minds just a reminder that IRAs can be set up if needed. I promised you I d have decals available each month, but the fraternal benefits night last night cleaned me out I do have Rosary bead cards available tonight and will try to have more decals next month. Please don t hesitate to contact our worthy Field Agent with questions about any insurance or annuity products at: Michael O Rourke Phone: or michael.o'rourke@kofc.org 25. District Deputy s Report (DD Tom Eifler): Worthy Grand Knight, Fr. Robert, Brothers, I bring you greetings from our Supreme Knight Carl Anderson, from the Board of Directors of the K of C and our worthy State Deputy Greg Kent. Page 5 of 13

I d just like to announce that there will be a 1 st degree followed by a 2 nd degree at 7:30pm on April 22 nd in Cary. I d also like to welcome Ralph Levans to your Council I think you ve got a great new member and as a past GK, I m sure he will have a lot to offer. As was announced earlier, there was a Free Throw Championship on April 6 th in Burlington and I said it more than once at each Council I work with, but I forgot to put in on my calendar and thus didn t attend. So, if there s something you think I need to attend to, don t feel bad about sending me a reminder I d actually appreciate it! Great job done by Al Munno on Divine Mercy Sunday what a great ceremony. The Knights of Columbus have a special incentive program for recruiting during the months of April, May & June. For each 1 st degree that you host or participate in, the GK & Membership Director s names will go into a hat. Two names will be drawn as winners, who, along with their spouses will make a trip to Rome & Assisi. I have the privilege of announcing a milestone for Room at the Inn it s now officially open at Belmont Abbey College. They re always looking for donations, so please consider going to the state website and continuing your support. For anyone interested in Bocci, there s a charity tournament that will be held at Cardinal Gibbons on Sunday, April 28 th to raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis in honor of Joey O Connell. If interested, please see me after the meeting. Reminder about the State Convention May 17 th -19 th at the Sheraton Imperial over in RTP while the GK & DGK will be attending, it is open to all. GK training is upcoming on June 8 th & 15 th. Just want to add to Father s words about how great you are as a Council, when I come here, I appreciate your hospitality and I always feel welcome and I appreciate that it s great seeing you guys. From the files of believe it or not : Gonzaga University, a Jesuit Catholic University does not allow Knights of Columbus on campus because we re exclusively Catholic and all groups on campus need to be all-inclusive you can Google it! Vivat Jesus 26. Good of the Order: Prayers were requested for: Bro. Raul Barbeito Bro. Tim Chetney s wife Julie Bro. Rich Carberry s sister-in-law Mary Schoeberlein Seminarian Philip Johnson Bro. Rich Pupi In anticipation of his excused absence, Lecturer Michael Zazzeri provided the following via Brothers All, It is very likely that I will not be able to make this evenings meeting. I've prepared (recycled!) a short talk attached here. Page 6 of 13

It being the Easter Season I thought this appropriate. For those of us who have been with the Parish for longer than 10 years you will remember Fr. Richard's Easter Homily taken directly from the 1600 year old Homily of St. John Chrysostom. John Chrysostom was famous at the time for his long homilies that resonated with the people of, what eventually became, the Eastern Church. This homily in particular became a standard part of the Easter Vigil and Easter Morning service in the ancient Church and still used today in the Eastern Rite. I've always loved this homily and am amazed how it has stood the long test of time...this is one of his shortest too! Even though it's 10 days later, it's still relevant. Enjoy the rest of the Easter Season. CHRIST HAS RISEN! Michael Zazzeri Lecturer The Easter Sermon of John Chrysostom Pastor of Constantinople (~400 AD) Is there anyone who is a devout lover of God? Let them enjoy this beautiful bright festival! Is there anyone who is a grateful servant? Let them rejoice and enter into the joy of their Lord! Are there any weary with fasting? Let them now receive their wages! If any have toiled from the first hour, let them receive their due reward; If any have come after the third hour, let him with gratitude join in the Feast! And he that arrived after the sixth hour, let him not doubt; for he too shall sustain no loss. And if any delayed until the ninth hour, let him not hesitate; but let him come too. And he who arrived only at the eleventh hour, let him not be afraid by reason of his delay. For the Lord is gracious and receives the last even as the first. He gives rest to him that comes at the eleventh hour, as well as to him that toiled from the first. To this one He gives, and upon another He bestows. He accepts the works as He greets the endeavor. The deed He honors and the intention He commends. Let us all enter into the joy of the Lord! First and last alike receive your reward; rich and poor, rejoice together! Sober and slothful, celebrate the day! You that have kept the fast, and you that have not, rejoice today for the Table is richly laden! Feast royally on it, the calf is a fatted one. Let no one go away hungry. Partake, all, of the cup of faith. Enjoy all the riches of His goodness! Let no one grieve at his poverty, for the universal kingdom has been revealed. Let no one mourn that he has fallen again and again; for forgiveness has risen from the grave. Page 7 of 13

Let no one fear death, for the Death of our Savior has set us free. He has destroyed it by enduring it. He destroyed Hades when He descended into it. He put it into an uproar even as it tasted of His flesh. Isaiah foretold this when he said, "You, O Hell, have been troubled by encountering Him below." Hell was in an uproar because it was done away with. It was in an uproar because it is mocked. It was in an uproar, for it is destroyed. It is in an uproar, for it is annihilated. It is in an uproar, for it is now made captive. Hell took a body, and discovered God. It took earth, and encountered Heaven. It took what it saw, and was overcome by what it did not see. O death, where is thy sting? O Hades, where is thy victory? Christ is Risen, and you, o death, are annihilated! Christ is Risen, and the evil ones are cast down! Christ is Risen, and the angels rejoice! Christ is Risen, and life is liberated! Christ is Risen, and the tomb is emptied of its dead; for Christ having risen from the dead, is become the first-fruits of those who have fallen asleep. To Him be Glory and Power forever and ever. Amen! 27. Chaplain s Summation (Fr. Robert Staley): Omitted. 28. Closing Prayer: The closing prayer was led by Fr. Robert Staley. 29. Closing Ode: Sung with great vigor and enthusiasm! 30. Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned by GK Chris Craney at 8:38pm 31. Attendance drawing: Attendance drawing was held with Bro. Thomas Gonzales name drawn. Bro. Thomas was not in attendance. Next Month s drawing will be for $40. Page 8 of 13
